| lowendz11306-01-05, 04:21 PM | I'm not getting much help on this issue so if you have any ideas at all please let me know. I was wondering if it was possible to use the craft skill to create technological devices. I know there are a couple of classes geared around making that sort of stuff but it never actually goes into what you need to be able to do it. Anyone have any ideas as to how to work it? To clearify, I'm wondering about making things that you could call "gizmos" somthing you might expect a gnome to come up with. For example boots that have rollerskates that can pop out when you press a button, or steampowerd hourse, something along those lines. |

He has Profession: Tinkerer, and Craft: Tinker-related. The covered all of the silly little inventions, minor mechanical devices, etc. Is that what you're looking for? More specifically, as far crafting materials, depending on the complexity of the item, I usually have costs range from salvage to 500 GP. Cogs, gears, springs, wheels...part of the fun is just having a jumble of parts (as seen by the other characters) turning into a handy little invention. |

Craft: Steam Engines Craft: "Walkers" for walking machines, really a sort of engineering skill Craft: Metalworking/Whitesmith, for cogs, springs, gears and other sundries Craft: Clockworks, Similar to Craft: Traps, and they get synergy bonus to each other. Rather than making spring loaded darts and deadly items, you make spring loaded skates. Mind you, there aren't that many places where the surface is smooth enough for skates to work...even typical fantasy roads are cobblestone. Of course, I don't think it would be wise to allow the steam engine into even a remotely traditional fantasy campaign, and walking machines have been the realm of sci-fi up until recent years so I don't think a horse is reasonable without magic. Of course, you could combine things with magic, which makes them a modified type of golem (Stone Horse). Alternative to investing skill points in this sort of thing you could pick up the feat Craft Golem and make any sort of thing you wanted. Of course, this requires one to be a caster. Of course, if you can do it without needing magic...the Fabricate spell becomes massively useful and powerful for you (how many steam engines did you want today?). |
