| Herr_Grinch8803-08-06, 01:00 PM | What would happen if you picked a 3 for your Constitution and then picked a Sorcerer or Wizard? You'd have NEGATIVE HP!!!! Is this right? or am I missing something? |
| The Almighty Dru03-08-06, 01:03 PM | You apply your character’s Constitution modifier to: • Each roll of a Hit Die (though a penalty can never drop a result below 1—that is, a character always gains at least 1 hit point each time he or she advances in level). So, no. You can not start off with negative HP. |
| loki8703-08-06, 01:03 PM | I don't have my PHB in front of me, I'm 100% sure it states that you get a minimum of 1 hit point per level after all penalities. :rolleye2: |
| Herr_Grinch8803-08-06, 01:05 PM | even at first level? when you create the character |
| The Almighty Dru03-08-06, 01:10 PM | even at first level? when you create the character .... Each roll of a Hit Die So, yes, even at first level. |
| Seeker9503-08-06, 01:28 PM | Unless... Your DM kicks off the campaign with something like this deviation from the traditional you all meet in a tavern opening line. Okay, you are all at -1 hit point. You think it's dark, but being unconscious makes it rather difficult to tell. In fact, you have no idea where you are (you remember where you were) and there is a dull throbbing where you think the back of your head should be. Roll a Stabilization check. :P |
| Another Gnome03-08-06, 01:29 PM | In other words, while at 1st level you automatically get maximum value of HD in hit points, it's still the result of a "virtual die roll" that gives you that, and all the rules for rolling hit dice apply. Oh, great. How the heck am I supposed to edit this post so it makes any sense now? Damn you, Seeker... |

| Parker_W03-08-06, 01:38 PM | Let me present to the board, the negative hit point adventuring group! Player 1: Ok so, I walk into the Inn...what do I see? DM: Ok umm...which one of you guys is in the Inn? Player 2 Me! I'm drinking an ale! Player 3 Me too! I'm in the corner of the Inn not talking to anyone though, and I have a mysterious map in front of me in a different language. DM: Ok, um, *looks at players HP*, ok player 1 you see an unconcious body lying next to a mug of ale. The body appears to be bleeding profusely. Also, you see a dead guy in the corner of the room. *Looks at player 1's hit points* DM ..and player 1; you explode. |
| Herr_Grinch8803-08-06, 01:55 PM | maybe you'd be undead with negative starting HP... jk :P |
| Dench03-08-06, 06:14 PM | what kind of loser puts a negative modifier in its con score?? and worse what kind of idiot would put a 3 in his con knowing that they are a low HD class?? Though it is possible (how stupid, anyway) PHB states that wou start with at least 1 hp, so the PC must be very, VERY cautios from everything, so, don't get angry with a townsfolk and his farming tools... look out the childs, they seem that they will throw you a rock... watch out the bite of that hamster... heck, a French Poodle! run for your live!! |

Take note, everyone, the only way to play D&D is Dench's way. |

I have a cleric that went from 1st to 15th level with 6 Constitution (currently a male Neutral Human Cleric 13/Heirophant 2 with 60 Hit Points and still going strong). Not only did he survive, he is the most powerful character in the group by far. Definitely a CoDzilla. :D |

Either way, if you're actually hit by anything that does damage, then you're going to be screwed. So you put everything into your defenses. Con 3 in a melee combatant would be stupid, but in a back row spellcaster, it doesn't really matter. |

Then, the combo of -4 con mod and a poor fort save means that you're dropping like a sack of bricks from that DC 12 poison, even at level 8 (when you finally reach +0 fort save, if you're lucky to get that far). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |

That is why someone must takes steps to protect against those forms of attacks, just like my cleric (who is nigh unkillable). Anyone capable of putting together a decent build can survive with even a 1 in Constitution (such as an elf). |
