I haven't played D and D since 3.0 came out and i have a couple of questions about 3.5
1) It seemed that the characters vs. the monsters was way overpowered in favor of the characters, just too much melee power.
2)Melee characters were way more powerful than magic using ones.
3)D and D never really had good grapple and overbear etc. rules.
Has any of this been fixed?
Thanks.

1) The odds are supposed to be in favour of the PCs for the common encounters (CR equal to party level, which in theory means the party needs to spend about 25% of its resources). Having several encounters per day, which depletes those resources, and having the occasional more difficult encounter ('boss fights', to use a computer game term) makes things a bit more dangerous though, as per the rules. I never had this problem.
2) Maybe at low levels, and even then only maybe. Casters (especially wizards/sorcerers) soon outshine non-casters completely, IMX, unless you as the DM take great care to balance things out a bit. Not necessarily detrimental to the fun, just something to take into account when creating adventures.
3) Grapple rules are pretty much the same, but they've been clarified a lot. Check it out in the SRD (http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/CombatII.rtf).

Salamander put it better than I was going to. I defer to his post.
