first off, their HD is calculated as the same as their masters (or whichever is higher). What affects is this needed for? spells like sleep? and/or for calculating a familiars skills / number of feats? or do familiars not acquire feats and skill increases the way that Animal Companions do? (do they even?)

the familiars HP are equal to half of the wizards rounded down, regardless of its normal HD. What if the wizard has a con score of 4 and is level 1? the master would only have 1 hp and the familiar would have none? i thought that HP was calculated as half the masters or its own, whichever is higher as everything else is on them.

Familiars are treated as having the same number of hit dice as their masters for purposes of determining the effect or outcome that is based on HD. Your example of sleep spells is a good one.

Familiars do not acquire skills and feats as would animal companions.

A familiar will have half the master's hit points, rounded down, minimum of 1.

Familiers never recieve feats.

They have ranks in all skills that the master has ranks in. An oddity is that at lvl 20 a wizard has a familier with a 15 int and full ranks in several knowledges that the master has. A familier can end up being the second smartest member of the group, and makes a better scholar than most NPCs.

It also means that any skill that the master has can be augmented by an aid another check made by the familier, so long as he's capable of helping.

A general oddity is that you can acquire a familier that can perform a profession or craft, you can have him make these checks in your stead instead of keeping him on hand. He pays for himself in 10 weeks with profession, and just keeps making money.

one more question. How do animals with flying fight in melee? do they have to have the ability to hover or do they have to do flyby attacks because creatures that dont have perfect fly ability cant hover

If they cannot hover, it is still safe to assume they are flying slower than max if they do not wish to move their maximum. They are attacking as they fly by, and this is accomplished much easier with the appropriate Feats.

Creatures with a flight manueverability off Average or worse cannot how unless they take the Hover feat. And just to expand on what Seeker95 said:

Let's say you have an owl familiar that want to attack in melee. Since it doesn't have the Flyby Attack feat, here's what it has to do.

Round 1: Enter melee range by flying at least 20ft (to avoid stalling) and make a melee attack.
Round 2: Decide whether or not to use your standard action before flying away. Then fly away.
