cover question [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-22-06, 04:56 AM First off let me apoligize if I posted this in the wrong area.

In my group we are playing the red hand of doom adventure. As most ppl are arware in 3.5 there is only one type of cover. However, our DM gave a monster what was called improved cover. This took the plus four bonus to plus eight. While the gamers didn't have a problem with the idea we had a problem with the lack of info about it. He said the adventure said that if said monster(s) were in paticular situations they had it. We are always being told use tatics use tatics, well here is a tatic that we can't use. He doesnt know where else it is stated about improved cover but he says that he read it else where but cant remember were. So it has been placed to us the players to find the info about it but we can't find it in any of our books. Please help...we need knowledge.....for it is power :fight!:

06-22-06, 05:07 AM I don't think there is such thing as improved cover...maybe your DM made it up?

06-22-06, 05:15 AM Without knowing much about it, what it sounds like is your monsters were under what I also call improved cover. Basically the phb states that whenever you (or a monster) is so completely behind cover that only a small part of you can be seen (such as peeking around a corner) your +4 ac bonus is increased to +8. Was that what happened? your creature stuck a limb, eyestalk etc out from behind a wall and attacked you? if not, I've got no idea

In some cases, cover may provide a greater bonus to AC and Reflex saves. In such situations the normal cover bonuses to AC and Reflex saves can be doubled (to +8 and +4, respectively). A creature with this improved cover effectively gains improved evasion against any attack to which the Reflex save bonus applies. Furthermore, improved cover provides a +10 bonus on Hide checks.Yes, it is in the rules. And it is even called "improved cover".

06-22-06, 01:34 PM I know the DMG uses it for creatures that are mostly submerged and fighting others that aren't in the water. I don't know of any other examples though.
