Cowering in Panic - Errata? [Archive] - Wizards Community

From the "Panicked" condition entry:

"If cornered, a panicked creature cowers and does not attack, typically using the total defense action in combat."

From the "Cowering" condition entry:

"The character is frozen in fear and can take no actions."

(emphasis mine)

This seems contradictory. One cannot cower and use the total defense action.

Any official ruling on this?

Thanks.

I think this is an issue of thesuruses going unused. When they say cower in the first instance, I think they mean someone huddled up behind their shield trying hard to block blows as they plead for mercy. :gah:
The second instance means dumb struck with fear; basicly going catatonic for a short period. :mymy:
But you should use whatever works best for you, these sort of word contradictions are so common they arn't worth spliting hairs over. :)

Are you getting this from 3.5? I only ask because my 3.0 DMG only says;

If cornered, a panicked creature cowers.

... which suggest to me that it might be a mistake in the later edition.

Finally, my not upgrading has been justified! :D

I'm actually referencing the 3.5 SRD.

From the fine folks at WotC customer service:

The panicked description is incorrect in this case. The line that states "typically using the total defense action" should be removed and ignored.
