okay, I am really confused about this whole thing.

How do I use CR to determine EL, and then how do I use it to determine XP.

Also, how do I apply EL if I only have two or three in the party?

It's actually pretty clearly defined in the DMG. Do you have that, or are you working off the SRD?

Just re-read the chapter in the DMG, it is not that complicated.

According to the rules you use the CR for XP calculation. You might also use EL but that can lead to different results. You will recognize the difference when you understand CR/EL and the CR/XP table better.

In a party of two, increase the EL by two.
In a party of three, increase the EL by one.
In a "party" of one, increase the EL by four.

No I am afraid I don't have it, working off the SRD...

(I know, I am evil, horribly evil for taking advantage of the system, but I don't have the budget for both d20 Modern and D&D, and my players thought D20 modern most worth it... oh, and it frees me up to spend money on things like the player's handbook to faerun, or whatever it is called, and I do plan to get the player's handbook once I acquire the money... ya, I know, excuses, excuses. I am lame, I admit it, now please help me.)

but in d20 modern, it looks like I am adding the total number to the average cr (or something like that)

Am I misunderstanding something or do they work differently?

Well, it's not in the SRD. Which means it's not open content, which means we're not allowed to reproduce it here. I can sympathize with money issues, but IMO the DMG is much more worth its money than the Player's Guide to Faerūn anyway. You might want to consider moving the DMG higher up on your list of priorities. ;)

As for Modern, that has a slightly different XP system and seriously different CR values (and corresponding XP/creature). They don't mix all that well without conversion.

sorry, I must have missed that when I was reviewing the part in the license on content that is restricted from being OGC. I had thought that it was only character creation and leveling up...

So, anyway, if I am already using the SRD, what books are more useful, player's handbook, dmg, or monster manual?

So, anyway, if I am already using the SRD, what books are more useful, player's handbook, dmg, or monster manual? The DMG. Missing out on a couple of monsters, as cool as they may be (Beholders, for instance) is not a real problem with so many others to choose from. The info missing from the PHB is absolutely minimal, so that's not vital either. I'd recommend getting the PHB as well though, just because it's used so often. If you want to save some money, buy a used copy of the 3.0 DMG for a couple of bucks. What you can't find in the SRD will be in there and will be the same in 3.5.

I will keep my eye open for used 3.0 materials... maybe If I am lucky they will have it at the local HalfPrice book resale shop...

Thanks for the advice.

Oh, yeah...

well, one of the things that I wanted the players handbook for was the dieties detailed therein. I know very little about basic dieties like Tyr or Helm, and I read somewhere that there was a dieties section in the Player's Handbook. (My gaming store is to far away for me to visit very often to find out. I plan on going again sometime soon though)

Although I was wondering if maybe dieties and demigods would be a better buy for me, if there is little else (but flavor text) in the player's handbook that I am interested in.

The PHB does have a section on deities, but it's quite limited. If that's something you're really interested in, I think a specific sourcebook like Deities and Demigods would be a good buy, yes.
