Hi! I just had a discussion with my DM over CR and LEs.
Am I incorrect in assuming that, despite the Effective level of a half-ogre 1st level barbarian being of 3, his CR remains 1?

Thanks. And sorry for the stupid question!

From what I understand, there are multiple half-ogre versions published, so I can't say for sure if your numbers are right. Still, you're correct in that often, the ECL of a character is higher than it's CR.

As for his CR "remaining 1", don't forget that class levels are factored into CR as well. So if the book initially stats them out as LA +2 and CR 1 (I'm guessing here), then with one class level, it would become ECL 3 and CR 2.

It would be the CR of the half-ogre plus one for your Barbarian level, plus 1 for every racial hitdie it has.

Just remember that LA and CR have nothing to do with each other.

Racial hit dice don't factor into CR, just ECL.

Unless you've added racial hit dice on top of what the "standard" creature has; but even then, it's not a 1 hit die = 1 CR ratio - it depends on the creature's type.

Correct. Improving/creating monsters is much like creating magic items. There are a few simple guidelines for specific situations, but most of the time you'll only determine its worth with comparisons and playtesting.
