The table doesn't support awards for encounters eight or more Challenge Ratings higher than the character's level. If the party is taking on challenges that far above their level, something strange is going on, and the DM needs to think carefully about the awards rather than just taking them off a table. See Assigning Ad Hoc XP Awards, page 39.

I have a Java encounter calculator, figures XP per character and how much treasure there should be.
For a party of anywhere from 4 to 15 3rd-level characters fighting a CR 15 monster, it's telling me 0 XP per character, Difficulty is "Obscene," and the advice to the party is "Start making new characters."

For 16 or more, the XP is still 0, but the difficulty has been downgraded to "Deadly" and the advice changed to "Run away!"

10-30-05, 11:32 PM This is why we Beat a CR 15. We came alone some Kobolts in the Woods on the Mission and they Were burying thing. We had to find out what they were doing for the Mission. The Kobolts had 2 Leaders with them and Cr 15 and Cr8 guy. Then as we started to talk to them a Party Member Messed up and Atcked the Cr8 Guy. Then they all atked us. The Cr 15 Guy and CR8 was suppost to help us Kill a CR 11. After the Battle was over the CR 15 had only 10 hit Points Left and we finished him off. Thats why were beat a CR 15. Im just trying to see how much we would get anyway?

10-30-05, 11:54 PM How much experience he would be worth is probably a moot point. You can only gain 1 level from an encounter. At the very most, you could receive enough xp to place you 1 away from 5th level IIRC. Being completely out of the scope of the rules, the award is solely in the hands of the DM.

Personally, I would give at most CR 1/2-1 for him. He was brought to 10 hp by others and finished off by surprise/caught flat-footed(if he wasn't surprised or flat-footed, something is really wrong) which would be no harder than killing a standard 1st level fighter with surprise. Not too much of a challenge for a 3rd level group really. Though I must admit to being perplexed by the CR15 guy being both a leader of the Kobolds and supposed to help you kill a CR 11 guy. If he was an ally and just hacked down to get some cheap XP then I would award nothing unless the group was evil, inwhich case I would award it as above.

10-31-05, 10:36 AM Reminds me of the end of Dragonslayer, where the king walks up to the dragon, which is blown all to hell from the wizard's attack, and places his sword in some organ of the beast, and his henchman proclaims that the king is the dragonslayer.

Please note that the king did not get any experience for the kill.

11-01-05, 04:39 AM A CR 15 with only 10 hit points left is not truly a CR 15. I'd have to know more about it, but it'd probably be a CR 3 or 4; four 3rd-level adventurers are on fairly even terms with a heavily wounded 15th-level adventurer with no place to go.
