07-03-06, 07:42 PM Okay. So I understand in CR 2+2 doesn't equal 4. So what would be the effective CR for a CR 25 and a CR 25 together. Is there a equation to help with CR difficulties? Also, how do you figure a fair CR for a party of eight or more players, since CR is based on the average party level of four PCs?

07-03-06, 07:51 PM I believe CR is only used for single monsters. So in your case, the XP from killing those two monsters would be the same as killing a CR 25...twice. If you mean EL (Encounter Level) then it typically goes up by 2 when you double the number. Two CR 25 monsters being EL 27, four being 29, eight being 31, so on and so forth.

No. It's not. You're confusing EL with CR. They are not the same.

It's funny, because that example is correct. Two challenge rating 2 monsters DO count as a CR 4 encounter.
Yet not because they add up, but because the DMG sais that two equal CR creatures count as that CR+2.

07-04-06, 11:27 AM Hmm, in this instance, for what the original poster is after, it doesn't matter to label it CR or EL. The effect is the same. The book states, that two creatures of equal CR can be treated as an EL of that CR+2. And the experience for an EL of say 27 is that of a CR 27 encounter.
Likewise an EL 27 is as challenging as a CR 27, whether it be two CR 25 creatures or one CR 27 creature, so it doesn't matter.
