I think its pretty obvious that in the case of magic arms and armor, the wizards are buying the masterwork items and 'enhancing' them into the magical weapons and arms. What about other items though? Where do they get the wands, rods, rings and other items to 'magicify'? Do you figure that they make them themselves, or do you make them buy or acquire them from somewhere? What of the wondrous items? Do the wizards need to get materials to make them or do they create them from nothing. If they are creating say a monk's belt, would they need to have some rope to make it with? If creating a bag of holding are they required to use an actual bag or do they create it from the ether? How do things work in the worlds you play in? |

The cost of this is over and above the enchantment costs, and in nearly all cases the item must be of Masterwork quality. I find this does several things: Encourages the players to choose a base of operations. Having a "home base" has a lot of benefits, both for the PCs and the DM! Plot hooks abound when the PCs have a vested interest in ensuring stability in a given area, and most player appreciate having ready access to various materials and goods. Helps soak some additional coin. C'mon, what DM hasn't found his players a bit overly wealthy at any one time? Provides additional PC-related plot hooks. A steady customer eventually develops a relationship with his vendors. Wizards have a tendency to consistently order high-value items, making them popular patrons indeed! So what happens when the local rogues' guild "involves" the local silversmith as a way to gain leverage over a powerful local wizard? Tune in to find out!;) |

I imagine though that a lot of campaigns consist of: Okay in your downtime, you craft the '____' spend the appropriate gp,xp etc. The rules are rather vague on some points. For instance not saying you need a bag to create a bag of holding or if it just appears from nowhere. I feel that 'craft' is an incorrect term for the feat. Perhaps enchant staff (or weapon or whatever) would be more appropriate. So, you can buy most weapons and armor, and some of the things you would probably need for wondrous items. What about wands though? Who makes them? Staffs could be pretty easy. Any large stick or branch could work. Although it wouldnt look as cool as ones that (who?) would make. I am also planning for my world, that unless the staff is masterwork or made of some odd material the failure (mishap) chances are much higher. |

| Loki565402-11-07, 09:06 PM | And am I missing something or is there no failure chance when creating a magic item? The only chance of "failure" is if you stop crafting in the middle of making an item and start on a second: A character can work on only one item at a time. If a character starts work on a new item, all materials used and XP spent on the under-construction item are wasted.Other than that, the expenditure of Material costs (50% of market value), Experience cost (4% of market value), and time (1 day for every 1000gp of market value) are considered enough so that success is assured. |
