I am positive this isn't in the right area, so please move it if need be.

Anyways, I have a player that wants to craft a Warforged, but all I own is the races of Eberron book, and i can't seem to find any info on forging them. Is there any rules out there? If not, I am just gonna have to put a creation forge as a mcguffin in an adventure for him.

You can't, unless you want to get into morality issues and topics on the soul.

Essentially, you need a creation forge to do it, and if he experiments with the schema involved, you may need far more than that.

It'd generally be easier to have him craft special homunculi that you reflavor into mini-warforged (poor copies without a creation forge, but still), and have him work on the forges in his backstory. See the iconic artificer in Eberron, Thondred, for an example of such a character (minus the homunculi).

In Eberron, the Treaty of Thronehold required that the creation forges from which the warforged spring all be destroyed. There are no rules for creating warforged, because it is no longer possible.

Actually, this isn't quite true: two forges are left. One is operated illegally by House Cannith, but it only produces very small runs, mostly experimental. The other is operated by the Lord of Blades, but it's not working quite right and produces mutants as often as not.

Anyway, this is all Eberron canon. In a non-Eberron campaign world things might be different, but you'll need to come up with your own rules for things.

I should also note that it's strongly implied that warforged were based off of a Xen'drik schema, and there may be forgelike devices in the ruins there (there undoubtedly were warforged-like devices in the age of giants, as the docent components imply). The Player's Guide to Eberron even mentions that people have sighted warforged-like creatures deep in the jungles, somewhere...

It's possible a pre-Galifar forge, of sorts, continues to exist. Or if it doesn't, then warforged from that era may still exist as well.

Well, you could make a perfect copy of a warforged with an epic origin of species spell, and I am guessing that the creation forges, if translated into game terms, are like gigantic, artifact-level, unlimited-use wands of Origin of Species: Warforged.

If not, I am just gonna have to put a creation forge as a mcguffin in an adventure for him. That's how they're written into the main setting. A Creation Forge is an eldrith machine, which is basically a big plot device.

Yes, Eberron uses "Eldritch Machine" as the name for the "Thing that does whatever the plot needs it to do" device. Essetially, they are statless devices that are as much above Artifacts as Artifacts are above mundane equipment. If you need something that can raise thousands of undead in moments, or destroy entire planes of existance in a single blow, its an Eldritch Machine.

The Warforged require the use of Creation Forges to create. The Creation Forges are Eldritch Machines. Without them, you would only get mindless golems that just happened to look like Warforged. There is something about the Creation Forge and the secrets locked away in it (the NPCs in the setting don't understand how the forges work, exactly, they just copied the plans from somewhere else and figured out how to make them work) that allows the creation of fully sentient, living beings like the Warforged.

In Eberron, the creation of Warforged was made a crime by the major treaty of the age that ended that setting's last world war. All of the creation forges were destroyed (well, two survived, but those are tightly kept secrets), and no one is allowed to make more WF essentially under the pain of death.

So, if you want to go by what the setting says, no, no character is going to be making Warforged anytime soon, its just not something they are capable of doing.

In a normal setting I'd require a fair amount of gps be expended to create the body and then animate it with a custom made varient of Awaken.

That being the case, what could it theoretically entail? Epic level casting, etc?

The idea was to make golems that could be mass produced, cheaply (for golems) and quickly. Although technically an eldritch machine (like the creation forge) is a harnessed Wish spell, so there may be some problems there.

The way I see it, it's like a space elevator -- expensive to set up initially, but after that, it works so cheaply that it pays for itself. This also keeps it out of most PC hands.

Epic Level Handbook has a spell for creating new races. Check it out.
