Hello,

THis may sound strange, but hear me out :)

I know many players who played 2E and now play 3E/3.5E in a way that, I guess is technically correct, but we find it gets rid of lots of fun.

THis is what I mean, a trap is found or a puzzle. They roll their find traps/DC intelligence check, etc to see if their character can solve it.

In terms of roleplaying a character, that would be correct since you are basing it on the character's ability, and not yours.

Instead, as a DM, I am trying to use "real traps". Traps that COULD actually work. That way, my players can roll to see if they can find it, understand fully how it works (instead of assuming from my description), etc, BUT in terms of disarming it, they actually have to figure out how to get by it.

An example of a basic one i had in a campaign, was a tensioned beam, almost like a catapult arm.

This thing released and swung around, the halfling was too short. the Dwarf got grazed in the head (partial hit, not square on) and knocked down and the barbarian got it right into his chest and crushed him into the wall.

Since we use the 2E combat and tactics, detailed/realistic critical hit system, the result was a mild concussion for dwarf+ bruises, while the barbarian, after several rolls, took damage, had broken ribs, collapsed lung, and a fracture in shoulder. (the strength of this swing arm was set to be like being hit by a truck essentially).

Now, this can't be disarmed or released once it's swung out. IT has to be pulled back. When players saw it, as barbarian was being crushed, thief tried to see if there was a release. Instead, since it was wood, they began trying to break thru the arm as others tried pulling it back (didn't work).

This trap, they had to find a way to REALLY release it as if it was real. I didn't let them just roll a DC check to figure it out.

I want to set my players (who are in a large psychological type of adventure right now), into a SAW type scenario...and I want "real" type of traps/scenarios, but need some help.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Sanjay
