| DeathOfRats04-28-05, 01:32 PM | I should know this already, but I guess I don't as it has cropped up recently. Is it just base weapon damage + str bonus that is multiplied when a crit occurs. Do the following also get multiplied? Powerful Charge extra damage. Skirmish extra damage. Sneak attack damage. Cheers! |
| Heironymus_Vann04-28-05, 01:48 PM | Yes, you should know this already! Pretty fundamental and clearly defined in the PHB. You ONLY multiply base damage dice and number bonuses... no bonus dice are multiplied, so no multiplication of sneak attack, elemental, skirmish, bane, etc. types of bonus dice. HV |
| Capt. Pixel04-28-05, 01:50 PM | You multiply Base Weapon damage + weapon enhancement + STR + STR enhancement (Two handed, Prayer, Bull Strength, Gauntlets of Ogre Power, etc) Energy bonuses, sneak attacks, skirmish bonuses, etc do NOT get multiplied. |

The easiest way (I think) to remember it is "is it additional dice damage"? If so, then it's a no. Anything that gives a straight +(number) to damage is multiplied.... power attack, smite, magic item bonuses - to name a few. :) |
| Zherog04-28-05, 02:29 PM | :OMG! I never thought I'd say these words, but.... Cog's right. |
| Eliza_Stormwhisper04-28-05, 02:42 PM | Hm... it depends on which edition you're playing. If you're playing first edition, you don't multiply anything because there was no such thing as a critical hit. |
| Fofroce04-28-05, 04:22 PM | Okay I guess we've been doing this wrong. My group, somehow, interpreted it as roll your damge dice twice. But what I gather from this thread it should be: STR 18 Weapon Spec. Longsword Crit + confirm roll 1d8 + 4(str) +2 (feat) x2 NOT roll 2d8 +4 +2 Correct? |
| Sarella Starshine04-28-05, 04:56 PM | yeah that's right. i need to remember that for my players as well as they forget to double thier str bonus when they land criticals as well. |
| Zherog04-28-05, 08:59 PM | You're sort of correct. You do in fact roll 2d8 damage. Then any modifier that's a fixed number (the 4 strength for example) gets added twice. Think of a X2 crit as hitting twice. So in your example you'd roll 1d8 + 4 str +2 weapon spec, then roll 1d8 + 4 + 2 again; or summarizing it, you'd roll 2d8+12. If you had additional dice of damage (for example, Sneak Attack) those would not be multiplied on a crit. Sitcking with the above example, if that character were also a 3rd level rogue, he would add 2d6 sneak attack (assuming he met the criteria). That 2d6 would never change for a criticial hit. |
| Zucrous04-28-05, 09:13 PM | Strength mod? I usually like to crit with scorching ray  HEHE |
| residieu04-29-05, 12:11 AM | Actually it's 2d8 + (4(str) + 2(feat))x2 or 2d8 + 12 You multiply the damage bonuses, but still have to roll the base damage dice twice. |
