| frasmage01-26-07, 08:05 AM | 1] is it possible for a thri-kreen to mate with a nymph, & if so what racial traits would their offspring have? half-fey (FF) thri-kreen 2] does the Vow of Poverty feat allow you to own a home, or must you live on the streets? what about a small keep co-owned by the whole party? so long as it isn't lavish, I don't see a problem. Another idea would be to live in a monastery. 3] say a player wants to be a fighter for the bonus combat feats, but only wants to use simple weapons(specifically a crossbow & a quarterstaff), what would you give her to compensate for giving up all access to martial weapons? um, nothing. They still have the proficiencies even if they don't use the weapons. |
| Seeker9501-26-07, 09:16 AM | 1. Depends on the fey's morals and the thri-kreen's fetish. 2. Own? No. But this does not mean he must live on the streets. 3. Nothing. It is a concept not a mechanic the player is choosing. |
| Edymnion01-26-07, 09:24 AM | 1] is it possible for a thri-kreen to mate with a nymph, & if so what racial traits would their offspring have?Simple, like was said, Thri-keen with the half-fey template. 2] does the Vow of Poverty feat allow you to own a home, or must you live on the streets? what about a small keep co-owned by the whole party?VoP has a very specific list of what the character can own. Small keeps and houses are not on that list, so they can't own one. They can still make use of them, if provided by someone else, but they can't own it.3] say a player wants to be a fighter for the bonus combat feats, but only wants to use simple weapons(specifically a crossbow & a quarterstaff), what would you give her to compensate for giving up all access to martial weapons?Nothing. Fighters routinely pick one or two weapons to use, and one kind of armor to wear, and ignore everything else. The proficiencies are there to give them option to pick what they want to use. They don't get to trade in unused stuff. They made the choice to use a particular kind of weapon, it was their decision. But if you really want to trade out, remember this. You should get something in return that is just as valuable as what you gave up. If the character is never going to use the feature, then it isn't worth anything to them. Hence, anything they get in return for it should be equally worthless. So, let me guess, you're playing a half-fey thri-keen fighter with VoP. Thats why you want to trade out the martial weapon prof, because VoP won't let you use it. |

I didn't know the answers & told them i'd look them up. John wants to play the offspring of a nymph who fell for a thri-kreen (which is no problem since i allow psionics). he's even got an elaborate background written up for it, but i didn't know about the 1/2 fey template & still don't know what book its in. Jenny wants to play a vow of poverty monk(drow), but my brother took his book of exhalted deeds back & i couldn't remember all of the specifics of the feat. & Kathrine wants to play the afore mentioned fighter(a human actually), but thinks she should gain something in return for giving up such a versitile and powerful class ability, and i agree with that but don't have a clue about what i'd replace it with. (& I really don't see how you guys can say that 35 free weapon feats is worthless). |

(& I really don't see how you guys can say that 35 free weapon feats is worthless). Well, you will opnly ever need 2 or 3 weapons (primary, secondary, ranged), the rest would not be worthwhile using as it means just more equipment to buy. You are best off picking just a few items and making them powerful. |
| Return of the Flumph01-29-07, 07:56 AM | 1] is it possible for a thri-kreen to mate with a nymph, & if so what racial traits would their offspring have? Not to be redundant, but the half fey template in the Fiend Folio is the way to go. 2] does the Vow of Poverty feat allow you to own a home, or must you live on the streets? what about a small keep co-owned by the whole party? ? Don't own the BOED, but my guess is that you can own as much as you need to to survive, which often involves somewhere to live. But not more than that. 3] say a player wants to be a fighter for the bonus combat feats, but only wants to use simple weapons(specifically a crossbow & a quarterstaff), what would you give her to compensate for giving up all access to martial weapons? If he wants to give up his PROFICIENCY with all martial weapons, then yes, I would give him something to make up for it. As the DM, you can decide to what extent switching class abillities is allowed. What exactly does he want to trade those proficiencies for? |
| KurenaiYami01-29-07, 08:18 AM | (& I really don't see how you guys can say that 35 free weapon feats is worthless). As was said before, you won't use all 35 (random number?) of those feats. The only way they would honestly all be used is if you, as a DM, planted a different weapon in each pile of treasure and purposely made every weapon they found significantly better than the one before it. But it's not really that large a hindrance to a character. Whether you're using a club or a katana, eventually that one or two damage difference will be near meaningless. |

(ie: for everyone who would allow the vop character to own a small dwelling, there's another who would vehenemently argue against it). i personally would never allow the feat just to save myself the headache. 3. this is why i use the weapon groups from unearthed arcana (or the SRD). but if your player is willing to give up proficency with all martial weapons, i might "trade" that class feature for maybe 1-2 extra class skills, or a bonus non-combat feat for instance. |
