Crumble and Throw [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-13-06, 11:00 PM In my gaming circle, there have been many occasions over the years when a favorite PC would bite the dust, and the player of the deceased character would then crumble the character sheet and throw it across the room. We refer to this maneuver as "the crumble and throw". Most of the time, the hasty player would later feel embarrassed for this outburst of emotion, especially if he had to sheepishly uncrumple the character sheet after being resurrected by his fellow adventurers. But sometimes a particularly stubborn or sensitive player would refuse to play the "sullied" PC again, opting to either create a new character, or go play video games.
Does anyone else experience this phenomenon in their group?

Granted, much of the crumbling and tossing in our group was done back in the high school days, but I'm sorry to report that even among my fellow adult gamers, I still see the occasional crumble and throw. Now it's usually done only when the player wants to try a diff. character, and the spirit of it is more good-natured frustration than childishness. (At least, no more childish than playing a game where you pretend to be a wizard usually is!)

My group doesn't have Crumple Throw [general]. No, when our characters die, we fold it into an origami boat, take it to the nearest lake, light it on fire and launch. I usually play Amazing Grace on the tin whistle. Then we go back and make a new one.

Or at least we would if any of us ever lost a character in a campaign that didn't in some way, shape, or form have access to raise dead, ressurection, reincarnation, or wish. 'Cause I mean, that'd be awesome.

01-14-06, 08:12 AM I have a player or two who will do the old crumple throw even when they don't die.

For example, one of my players was playing a high-Dexterity character build with 20 Dexterity. In the second game with said character he took 5 points of Dexterity damage from poison gas.

He made a big deal out of it, performed the crumple throw, and stormed off citing that his character was now useless (despite the fact that he still had 15 Dex left) and completely incapable fo doing anything.

I find that there is a pattern with this particular player--anytime his character loses one of his strengths or otherwise becomes dependent/less heroic, he often throws a fit.

My other players suck it up and seek healing.

Yeah, it's usually cause to call the player a big baby when they do such a thing. Some people are just bad losers, no matter what age.

01-14-06, 12:00 PM I have them give the sheet to me so I can later use them as NPC's. I haven't had the crumple thing done in a long while, usually they throw a fit, storm out the door, and are never seen again, thankfully. The oldest I ever had do that was 28.

In a recent adventure, my character went blind, far from civilization, and none of the party members had the ability to cure it whatsoever.

I had to be guided all the way back to town (which took a few days) before we could do anything about it.

And I didn't throw a hissy fit... So what's 5 dex damage, in comparison?

i was on the ground with 4 hp full power attacking the seven-some wolves surrounding me. through some divine joke i didnt get hit again, and along with that, my friends all got the finishing blows on the wolves.

basically survival through luck on a pc i had long since give up on.
