Last week, my party of two entered the Trollmoors {from the FR setting} with high hopes. I enjoyed running the adventure very much and would love to share it with the rest of you.

My party consists of a Half-Orc Barbarian2/Bloodhound1, and a Drow Warmage2. The half-orc's character was something akin to a Berserker, rushing into battle, smashing through anything in his way with his Orc double axe. The Character's name is Fang, and he comes from the Northern lands as an enraged survivor and oppurtunits, making a living by Bounty-Hunting.
Axel, my groups drow, is a witty combatant. He loves hammering his enimies with spell after spell, and plays a Warmage very well. He enjoys playing tricks on his opponents, and firing extremely destructive spells from a distince, but can hold his own in melee. Although Axel, this Drow, lacks Fang's habit of rushing blindly into a fight and leaving his enimies in pieces, he is definatly smarter.

Recently they have ventured into Nesme, a frontier city on the edge of the wretched Trollmoors, only to find a hunting band of trolls dragging off a group of Nesme citizens. The heroes took up the chase, until they ran strait into a bog. I treated the Bog as quicksand for all purposes. Axel, the drow, was sinking fast with his lower Consitution score, but his buddy Fang was already pulling himself out and shaking it out. With more then a few lucky stregnth rolls, the half-orc was out, and pulling the Drow out of the muck. The two desided to camp out for the night, for reasons I do-not-know. But trolls wake up at night. I don't see the purpose of camping out for the night though, because halfway through they were attacked by a large group of six trolls. Axel immediatly wipped out his wand of fireballs and began blasting away {he had used up most of his loot from the last adventure buying two fireball wands, useful against trolls}. Fang began to do something off to the side, even though Axel, who was now being surounded by trolls, was shouting to him to get up and rage them. Fang spent his turn sprinkling oil on his Orc Double Axe, and lighting a torch. Axel kept the trolls from ripping him to pieces by using one or two Acid Splash spells, saving his fireball wands for later. Meanwhile, the trolls were using up their rounds trying to clobber and swarm Axel, and they hadn't even noticed Fang yet. But when fang's round came around, he put on a stunning display and easily finished off the three trolls left, his double axe ablaze with flames. The PCs had won out that night, but Axel was tired and his Acid Splash spells were used up. He had also suffered a bad blow from a troll at the side of his head, reducing him to half of his hitpoints. Fang had gotten out of the fight without any injuries thanks to his flaming axe plus his rage ability, but more was to come, for the pair had only seen one night so far, and they had hardly gotten close to capturing Nesmes citizens and killing the trolls.

wow, an 11,250gp item for a second level character and a El 10 encounter for an effective party level of 1.25. Sounds very intense!!

Interesting idea using lamp oil to add fire damage to his axe, I'd probably allow that in my game as long as it wasn't abused. Are there any official rules that support that, or did you guys ad hoc it on the fly?

Well, my buddies watch alot of action movies {the mummy, Indiana Jones, James Bond, you know} and creative fighting makes up alot of my games. I do apply penalties, however, and Fang's axe did in fact take fire damage, as well as damaging the trolls. I encourage creative fighting, as I think more DMs should do {but I always keep it balanced}.

After the last skirmish at the camp fire with the trolls, the PCs met up with a group of Nesme scouts, heading out into the moor hunting trolls. The PCs, always seeking an oppurtunity to work with others, gratefully excepted the Nesmian's offer to work together. The next battle was a pretty exciting one. A group of two trolls, being persued by the PCs and the Nesme scouts, fled into an abondened mine, where a purple worm lay at rest. The trolls were the first it attacked, but when the PCs and their new friends came barging in, the great worm wasnt picky about who it attacked. Fang charged the purple worm, going into a rage and slicing into the worm's thick hide. The nesme scouts attacked, one scoring a critical hit on a troll. In the troll's round, though, it shook off the blow, regained 5hp and layed the scout low and disabled. Oh, by the way, the abandoned mine is flooded up to one foot in murky water. Axel used a lightning bolt on one of the trolls, and it effectively held it back, if not killing it, while Fang hacked away at the worm. Eventually, the worm, seeking refuge, slithered off into the mineshaft, leaving the trolls, PCs and Nesmians to battle it out. After Fang, already wounded from the purple worm, fell unconsious to the floor, the drow battle mage had to do what his name implied-battle. Lighting a torch he ran strait into the battle, but realized his mistake when the trolls charged right towards him, regardless and unaware of the fire. Unlike the slaughter of trolls the previous night, Axel only scored a minor amount of damage on the troll, while the thing pounded him backwards. Two acid splash spells had the already injured troll dead, with the other one being mobbed by the Nesme scouts. Once the still standing combatants dragged their comrades out of the mine, they all took a long rest, Fang regaining consciosnous and hp. {I gave them a break with no random encounters while they were resting.} After traveling through a fair amount more of the trollmoors, and now it being late evening with the sun fast descending, the adventurers came upon an island in the middle of a large swampy algae filled pond. The island had four tents on it, from each of which sounds and light came out of.
The PCs waded through the shallow water while the nesmians waited on the shore. When they made it to the island, Axel, the one who could speak goblin, recognized the voices as goblinoid. Axel snuck into one tent to wreak havoc with his spell while Fang carelessly used up another rage charging into another tent, thouroughly collapsing it and the five goblins in it. Fang fought furiously with the other goblins tangled in the fallen materials.
Meanwhile, Axel was engaging in close combat with a goblin. He was brandishing a spear, and luckily managed to slip the weapon inbetwenn the goblins ribs. The spearhead came off, however, and Axel's spear was now being treated as a club. Axel reacted quickly to the other two goblins in the tent-shot another trusty bolt of lightning at one, and magic missile for the other one. One gobliin was killed off with the other dying fast, and Axel left the tent-to find Fang walking away from the second tent he had destroyed, moving onto the third. The PCs entered the tent as one, to find four goblin warriors {yes, NPCs} and one goblin rouge on the far side of the tent. {Finally I have found a use for the sample goblin rouge NPC in the Dungeon Master's guide. Well, it proved this encounter was to much for the already battle weary PCs. Axel, down from the goblin rouge's sneak attack, was fast dying. Fang had saved the day then grabbing the parchment off the table in the tent and dragging Axel out through the pond. The group ran far enough away and started a camp where they could read the paper.....more next time!

At what point did D&D players lose their creativity? Sorry.:) Didnt mean for it to sound that way, but I have added my own spell list, which includes 3 levels of lightning bolt, all of which warmages have axcess to: the first level which the warmage and wizard can get as a 0 level spell, the spell Shock. The next is lightning arc, one strait crackling blue line of lightning that can hit one target. This is a 3rd level wizard spell and 4th level warmage spell. The last and most powerful is lightning storm-an explosion of blue and white lightning, which looks something like the emperor shooting up a storm with lightning. :emp: Oh, and what exactly did you mean by "we have a lot of fun". Is not D&D a game? Has the idea of house rules flown from your mind? I have simply expanded upon a popular spell, and in effect a class popular among my group. :P

Easy there, Captain. I meant it exactly as it was typed. It seems like your sessions are a lot of fun. I know that D&D is a game to be modified and enjoyed, and you can make spells that hurl waxed fruit if you want. I was just asking about the lightning bolt because I don't have the source book with Warmage.

Sorry. You know how alot of people on these threads forget what D&D's all about, and get caught up in the rules of the game. Sorry about that, really. Warmages gain axcess to lightning bolt at 2nd level, by the way.;)

My party sometimes pulls things like the flaming axe out of nowhere and I just roll with it. They get their butts kicked by superior tactics as much as they whup the enemy with them so it all works out. :P

Sounds like an exciting adventure.

Well, I finally got done our last section. Only one big encounter. You'll be surprised.

So, my PCs, Fang and Axel, are finally ready to finish their adventure. So, as it turns out, the paper read {in goblin, so only Fang could read it} that the trolls and goblins had made an alliance, and that the trolls were being very rude about it. Axel, always the strategist, decided that they could take advantage of the small agruments between the troll and goblin alliance. So, Fang and Axel decided to portray themselves as evil slave traders from the Underdark that have captured a small group of Nesmians. Most of the beginning was just walking through the swamps and hills or the moors, but when I started to get bored I dropped in something.

While Axel and Fang trotted along, with their 'slaves' behind them, they came upon an old troll camp, long abandoned. Other then the campfire and footprints, they found some Nesme citizens bodie's. Fang, once he saw this, told me he went and slammed his axe into a tree over and over again. Axel asked the Nesme soldiers how many were taken, and they answered five. After inspecting the bodies, Axel saw there was three dead. Fang guessed that they must have 'mis-behaved or somethin', but Axel thought differently. Very observantly, he realized that the trolls would have eaten them instead of leaving their bodies here to rot. After lots of search checks Axel came to the conclusion that the bodies must have been infected with the something the trolls didnt want to get. This was right, of course, but he needed lots of steering in the right direction.

After this, the PCs and their 'slaves' found a large cliff protruding out of a swamp, with one big central cave. There were two goblins and a troll guarding the entrance. Axel shot a fireball at the troll, who, in troll fashion, instead of jumping into the swamp, ran right into the caves. The goblins just ran away, and were chased by Fang. Meanwhile, Axel ran into the cave, to see the flaming troll running back and forth in his cave, with his comrades yelling at him. So Axel short a delayed fireball in the middle of the cavern, knowing that he couldn't possibly take them all on at once, and ran out of the cave. BIG BOOM. Now, Axel was cornered alone in the swamp wiith all the trolls, some on fire, rushing out of the cave. Just then, Fang came back, with blood all over himself {goblin blood}, and raged. He sliced through all of them, killing the ones on fire, and the ones that werent, well, he didnt care. By the end there was body parts everywhere, and Axel was shooting firballs at the trolls that were trying to regenarate. Finally, marking the next encounter was the big fight with the boss half troll/half hill giant. Blah bla blah bla the PCs won and got loot. The end. :P

You see, I am a roleplaying player and hack 'n slash player, so I like exciting dramatic fighting actiony plots. There was supposed to be alot of drama and action.:P There was suppossed to be some drama about the goblin/troll alliance, but my players decided just to kill the boss and be done with him....
