Okay, in the 2E DMG, page 83 states that "When a character is struck by insanity due to mental attack, curse, or whatever...", and then lists a whole bunch if insanities and explanations.

A) This is missing in 3E and 3.5.

B) Curse is not a spell.

I looked it up and it does not exist in 2E, 3E, or 3.5. I found Bless, though. 1st level Cleric spell. in 3E+, it states that Bane is the opposite of Bless as a sidenote. Note that "Bestow Curse" exists as a level 3 divinity.

In 2E, the more applicable here, there is no Bane or Bestow Curse, but it DOES say under Bless that a cleric can just as soon Curse with the opposite effects of Bless.

I'm a little confused with Gary Gygax's entry on Insanity. I LOVE the idea of making somebody crazy with a curse, and you always hear about hexes, curses, and whatnot, and my QUESTION IS:

Why doesn't curse curse? Is there alternative higher level spells that effect people the way our common respect of a curse might that I just don't know about?

EG: Sleeping Beauty curse. Must I use Wish?

Forgot.. Gygax did not write anything in AD&D 2nd edition. It was coordinated by Zeb Cook, IIRC.

The "By Gary Gygax" on the cover means nothing?

Does the book have a red efreet demon thingie o nteh cover, with a woman in its hands. Back cover has a city at the buttom ?

If so, then you have the 1st edition DMG, which is indeed (mostly) written by Gygax.

If it has a red dragon, and a weird wizard type, then its 2nd edition, and Gygax's name is only included because it was a more familiar name than Cook's.
