D&D 3.X Preservation Society - sorta [Archive] - Wizards Community

I too was taken aback by the announcement of 4.0 but not entirely surprised by it.

I'm not writiing it off completely but I don't intend on buying it or playing it for at least 4 years if ever. So this is an open invitation to those who'll stick with 3.X for a while to join together and form a kind of "D&D 3.X Preservation Society" so at least those of us not wishing to move on to 4.0 right away or ever can find other players and groups who are planning to stick with 3.X as well.

Whadaya think?

Anyone interested in getting something like this started?

08-29-07, 12:26 PM Not I. 3.5 Preservation is accomplished by the way I store my books from all the previous editions. And the Library of Congress. :tiphat:

I started playing in 2E around 94. So after about five years when 3E came out, I didn't see the need to upgrade. Around 2001 and a few trips to the bookstore later, I decided that I liked what I saw, so I converted.

Fastforward to 2003: "3.5 edition? WTF!?! I have no reason to upgrade!" Again, around 2004 and a few trips to the bookstore later, I decided that I liked what I saw, so I converted.

So, I've already hit that "4th edition? WTF!?! I have no reason to upgrade!" phase. It's just a matter of time before I head to the bookstore and inevitably like what I see. I'll probably have bought the core three books by late 2008. If I time it right, maybe I can get them as birthday and Christmas presents... I find the sting of the upgrade isn't so bad if someone else buys them for me :P

So, DoctorRomulus, while I initially feel like I want to join your 3.5 preseration society, I have a feeling I'll get booted out in about a year or so anyway. I guess I just have to be honest with myself. ;)

See, I'm a gamer. To me anyways that says it all. I'll continue to play games of any edition so long as I'm having fun.
Currently I'm playing in a very slow paced 1st ed game,
a normal 3.5 game,
just begun running a 3.5 Dragonlance campaign,
and have discussed on/off running or playing a Basic/Expert edition Mystara based game.
And I'm thinking about running a 2nd ed game at GenCon next year.
4E? I can't say as I've got any plans for it yet, but that's just because they haven't actually SHOWN me anything usefull to base an opinion on so far. So I'll just wait & see what form it takes and then cosider my options.

08-30-07, 12:22 AM I wonder if people who drive a VW Golf start a "preserve the old model society" when the company introduces a new model. I guess most people just keep driving their car. I mean, you can be all political about it, but then we're not living in the 60ies anymore.

Well, I guess people with some common sense just calm down, keep playing their current favorite edition and when 4ed comes out, check what the fuss is about... but if you need more attention feel free to do whatever you like.

While that sentiment is mostly valid, a car doesn't require you to have three or more other drivers who like the same car in order to drive it. I think the cries of "money grubbing!" are ridiculous, and the 4e-hate mostly overblown, but the difficulty of finding like-minded players is one of the more valid of the "save 3.5" concerns.
