"I'm sure that this is going to cause a stink, so I figure that you may as well hear it from me first. D&D 4th edition is now roughly six months away. That will of course have implications for games such as Arcanis as with this new edition, as it will also mean that the Open Gaming Licence is gone (or any support for it at the very least)". Grrr....
Bob Loblaw 08-25-06, 11:54 AM	Your "person in the know" doesn't really seem to know very much. WotC will no longer support 3.5 when 4.0 comes out. This is simply a fact of the way the business works. Since they have products scheduled until the end of 2007 (that's more than 6 months away by my calculations), there is no way that 4.0 will be out before then. I have noticed a continuing trend with all these "someone at WotC told me" threads. Not a single person is mentioned by name or title. So that tells me that these threads are either spam (most likely) or the posters really don't have any insider knowledge (a very real possibility).

jokei 08-25-06, 12:50 PM	Not wishing to sound stupid, but this is the first I've heard of a 4th ed. Not that I see it as a bad thing, but I'd assume that it would be fully compatible with v3/3.5? Or is Thaco making a return?:confused:

There would be posters, previews on the website, and "countdown to 4th edition" articles in Dragon magazine. You know, marketing?If you're going to be releasing a brand new product, you want to create awareness and hype for it. Now, you could say "they're keeping it secret so it doesn't hurt sales of 3e books". But that doesn't make a lot of sense, since suddenly dropping 4e on the customers would leave them confused and angry. Which is not good if you're trying to launch a new product. It's possible that WotC is doing this anyway, but it would be incredibly stupid...the kind of stupid that could easily kill the company.

I rebember before d20 It was videogame Baldruc Gate ... and I think the 4E will be a lot of time after ¨playtesting¨ the d20 system in videogames (Neverwinter Nights, Dragonshard..) and the MMORPGs like Stormreach, . Perhaps a option might be, not a D&D 4E, but a new updated d20 Modern, more general settings...
jokei 08-25-06, 02:11 PM	I don't necessarily think there's a need (certainly not at this point) for a 4th ed. What I'd assumed on the release of 3.5, was that "upgrades" - by way of new feats, classes etc, would come out. The DMG and PHB II, seem to reinforce this, and I would expect to see volumes III of each of these at some point in the future. Which would be no bad thing per se'. (Anyone else feel PHBII a little lacking). I feel the d20 system works really well and am very happy to be playing it. Also someone previously mentioned the massive alienation that a V4 would cause, I tend to agree and regardless of your feelings to WoTC, it would seem unsound business sense to annoy a bunch of loyal supporters/customers who probably refuse to take up the new system, look how much controversy still rages over AD&D vs 3.5 etc.
Kadasbrass 08-25-06, 02:13 PM	People have been claiming 4th Edition is just "around" the corner since 3.5 was announced. This claim seems no more creditable then any other "source in the know." Most "knowledgable" sources are people that listen to these same rumors and spread them around themselves, and when they finally hear someone qoute something they themselves have spread, they believe that as fact. Wizards put alot of time and energy into 3rd and 3.5, I doubt that they will release another version so soon. Such an policy would be moronic since they would lose a large percent of their target market. I'm not saying people would be angry with 4th edition, I'm arguing that people would be angry with with it coming out so soon, and a large part of the market won't bother to switch so soon. They know this, since people still play 1st, 2nd, and 3rd edition D&D. Each new edition means you lose a part of the existing market and have to spend more money to draw in new people.

Taeldrin Laesrash 08-25-06, 09:29 PM	Obviously, Wizards is not going to release 4E in six months, as Complete Champion, last I heard, was scheduled for release in summer '07. Not to mention, why would they release it so soon? AD&D 1st and 2nd edition lasted at least ten years each, why should this be any different?

Since some of the replies in the thread are starting to go south anyways, it is time that this thread is closed.
