From personal experience players are more likely to "role play" if they've got a Killian's Irish red in them. (A D&D game is no place for budget beer).

I, the DM, sometimes like a beer or two. But nothing further.:)
My players happen to dislike beer. *****s of sweet alcohol drinks, I say.

that's interesting - how do you maintain control over the game after having consumed a couple beers? I find that after a drink or two, my players want to start listening to Pantera and talking about girls... and the game goes out the window! any tips on how to combine D&D and beer?

I tend to find my DM'ing style is only enhanced when I enject crack into my eyes, give the players a sense of horror, then they can really roleplay.:D

Don't drink more than others start to be able to notice you had a few beers. Others, because you always consider yourself less drunk than you really are. In general, two beers are good to be sober enough to keep playing well, even expand the fun.

And, two to three of the gamers are either gay, eternal virgin or simply not yet interested in girls. So that conversation won't occur on my gaming table.:D

In the 26 years I've gamed I tried to drink and GM once. It didn't work well as I tend to fall asleep when I drink

We once had a player who used to show up with a case of cheap beer and consume most of it. After a few sessions one of the other players had a long talk with him about his tendency to become drunk and loose all focus. We were on the verge of throwing him out of the group.

He started drinking Mountain Dew instead and became a bundle of energy.

My players would not put up with excessive drinking as it tends to ruin their enjoyment of the game.

When my friends and I play we usually end up having a beer or two. But we never drink to excess. Since we're always eating throughout the game drinking a beer pretty much does nothing except mix with the flavor of the food.

Last time was special though, my girlfriend, who also plays ( :D ) bought some mead. As we played we were drinking, as the bottle claimed, "The Drink of Irish Kings"

Honestly, I did not like it, I would have a nice Harp, but everybody else, especially my best friend, loved the honey-liquor.

Its worth a try if you're into sweet alcohols.

*Note: Only if you're of legal age in your country. I'm not advocating underaged drinking.*

Forgot to add: Drug use would not be tolerated at all. That would definitely ruin the adventure.

I dont drink alcohol. Reasons: Convictions and taste (I find anything chemically based upon ethane, ethane included, to be absolutly revolting, to the point of sickness). I am so sensitive to ethane based chemicals I can smell them across a room. My friends know this, and if any of them drink alcohol (I dont know if they do or not) they know to not do so around me.

Most of us're underage, so no drinkiness. Plus the only alcohol I like is kahlua.

I think it depends on how serious the game is.

If its a dark, sinister, very mature/serious game, then alcohol probably isn't warranted.

If its a kill-everything-you-see game, or a very informal game, then drinking yourself stupid is totally acceptable.

Drinking alcohol doesn't mean you get drunk...
Of cooouuurse, we are talking about mature players, aren't we ? ;)

/sigh

Anyway, a few drinks or other things can remove some inhibitions and produce some interesting rolepaying scenes :D

My game table tends to be loose on the alcohol rule. The people I game with just know what I will and will not tolerate. Drug use/nicotine is right out though.

I have thought of spiking the player's drinks with acid to "Heighten the RPG Experience" though... :D

Seriously, I've played in games and the DM wouldn't let me level-up until I did a shot. Also got an XP bonus for drinking half a bottle of chilli sauce.
On the whole, I'm going to assume that drug-use re(e)fers to smoking, which regardless of the legal implications, should probably be treated in the same way as alcohol, it may well be ok - IN MODERATION.

How better to get into your dwarven character? :)

There are two types of people, those whose alcohol intake alters their personas drastically (so don't allow them to drink while playing), and those for whom a nice drink helps clear away the mind from the day's clutters (doesn't hurt the game at all). There's a reason they have a "beer & pretzels" style game, it implies relaxed.

I see no reason not to allow alcohol.

Next the DM will say no fatty foods because you need to be in good shape to stay at the table longer.

It's a game to be played. That's it.

Now if someone is getting totally drunk and is a safety hazard that's a different story.

Well, I was happy to down the booze (kinda) and the chilli suace posed no problem. The thing is, for the group I was playing it at the time, none of us took it too seriously and it was a form of social interaction, so that behaviour was a part of the ethos of those gaming sessions.
If you don't want to game with a bunch of drinkers, then don't. The campaign I'm in, we drink a little, but that's it, a couple of beers during play - and I as the DM, won't have a beer until the end of the 2nd hour (just a personal rule).
If you want to play a "straight-edge" game, that's good, but each session and group is different.

But sometimes - before playing - a glass or two of wine to accompany a piece of cheese and a slice of bread, is good to have a vivid roleplay :D

What kind of alcoholics are you gaming with that you need to make "no drinking during the game" a rule?

I don't think I've ever seen someone who actually wanted to play have more than a beer or two during a game session. If you've got someone that shows up at the session to get wasted, they need to ask themselves if they really want to be there.

You're right. Maybe instead of going to D&D meetings they should be going to AA meetings....

My feeling is pretty much, if I'm hanging out with my friends do anything (watching TV, playing board / card games, listening to music, etc) we might have a beer. So why shouldn't we be able to have a beer or two while we play D&D.

But yeah, as long as you are playing a game for fun instead of some super serious character interaction everything you say is IC type game I don't see the problem with drinking.

What kind of intense focused games do you play? It's not like D&D is chess or poker where you have to employ incredible mental calculations and whatnot during the game... I don't see why drinking (or even doing other drugs) would impair your ability to pretend you are an elf.

If you wouldn't allow me to drink a beer while playing (even though I don't), I would probably tell you to lighten up! :)

4 people in our group of 6 are teetotalers, and the other two drink rarely. I host, and the Wife and I are two of the teetotalers. We do not allow alcohol in our house, nor do we invite to game anyone who has been drinking. Aside from personal lifestyle choice, we were involved in a game that had drinking involved and really hated what turned out, so we just disallow it entirely.

Smoking is also disallowed. The wife (player and sometimes GM) has fairly severe Asthma and an attack can be triggered by being in an enclosed space with someone who smokes after an hour or two, even if they haven't lit up in hours. So that is disallowed. None of the group smokes, and most of us really dislike the smell.

And before anyone asks we are all in our late 30's early 40's.

As I said on the "Bathroom Breaks" thread I started, I have that same kind of asthma. That said, smoking isn't allowed anywhere in my apartment, or even on the patio. All of my friends who do smoke are very good about being sure to do it far away from me due to the disease. I bet your wife is like me, always carrying an inhaler with her at all times, keeping them throughout the house, in the gym bag, etc, etc, etc. Not very fun, but hey, it helps us live!

Its very noble to totally abstain from alcohol all together. Are you able to cook with it?

:) Thanks. I do it now for Faith based reasons, but my father was an alcoholic, and I swore at a young age, that I would never touch the stuff. And yeah, cooking sherry and such is fine. Most/all of it gets burned off during the cooking process.

And yeah, Inhalers all over, and a nebulizer in the living room. :)

People in our group have to sit still, shut cell phones off, reach for chips slowly without ruffling the bag, keep elbows off the table, forego cigarrettes and alcohol five hours before the game, arrive ten mintues early, pass a monthly drug test, keep our character sheets unwinkled, and sit discussing how stupid that would be and to just play the game how we like.

DND without beer? Why bother?
Lord Mhoram

08-25-06, 08:23 PM
The whole point, to me, of any of these kind of things, is to choose whatever increases the fun of playing. In our group drinking and smoking reduces the fun of the fun of the game, so we don't do them. Other people have different standards - as DrakoShade said - he doesn't want to be denied his creature comforts - so the very things that increase our enjoyement of the game decreases his.

Like much else in gaming - find a group with similar apporach and attitudes and away you go. :)

D&D, for me anyway, requires (or is at least enhanced by) suspension of disbelief. Alcohol consumption, especially in my case, leads to a shift in interests - my patients goes out the window... it's because of my personality - I'm exceptionally outgoing and social as is, and alcohol kills my desire to concentrate... having said all this, if anybody brings alcohol to a game, of course I'll accept that and continue to play

I'm a little surprised how many of you endorse D&D+drinking - the group of players who initially got me into D&D to begin with were adamant about maintaining a no-drinking policy during play - the irony being that they were all a group of hardcore party people who consumed drugs and alcohol at all times except during play... I feel that D&D taps into almost childlike imagination, enthusiasm, and logic - it's a bit like playing with He-Man figures in an organized setting............... call me nuts, but alcohol doesn't "fit" the atmosphere - kids don't need alcohol as a catalyst for triggering their imaginations - why should adults?

p.s. I'm no teetotaler either - outside of gameplay, I'll drink anybody under the table! :D
Sarella Starshine

08-26-06, 10:09 AM
well, sadly, by the time most of us gets to be adults, we forget (or have it leeched out of us by a crappy education system) how to trigger the imagination, as having an imagination is apparently contrary to being an adult, so there are people that need to lossen the training of squishing the imagination, and one of the easiest ways is through alcohol (not to mention is prob the only legal way as the US has a very rigid no tolerance stance on anything else).

and draco, you are welcome as long as you don't mind smoking on the porch (i have an infant so...no smoking inside :)) :)

We usually drink a few beers/whiskeys during our game, sometimes a bit more. If I dm I usually don't drink too much though. I don't have as much of a problem with it as a player, because I can keep my attention reasonably focussed on the game, if I don't have to worry about all the players (which I have to do as a dm, because we are all fairly new players)

We used to smoke pot occasionally too. It works like a charm in moderation, especially hash (sp?), because it tends to focus you, and keeps you calm

I work at a wine store, so I often bring a bottle or two to the games. As long as I feel well prepared as a DM, I am not afraid to have a few glasses over the span of a few hours of gaming. Other members of the group work at a food store, so the wine is frequently well paired with cheeses and fruits. Fun is had by all. In my game, I have never had a drunken player, so it isn't really an issue.

Smoking on the other hand, is a problem for me. I don't like the smell of cigarettes, so anyone smoking such products goes to the balcony. My rule is that if they are out there during their turn in combat, their character holds it's action until they return. Other members of the game smoke another product, but since that smell doesn't bother me, there is no problem. I continue to be amazed at the accurate in game memory of one of my non-tobacco smoking players. She can recall details from games months and years ago with an ease I simply envy. So much for memory loss.

Mature responsible Drinking does not mean Immature Irresponsible Drinking to get Drunk..

By the time you reach 30 you should know the difference.

If you Drink to get Intoxicated you need AA not D&D:eek:

As far asking about Drugs...there ain't no need in even voicing an opinion about Illegal Drugs

But as A Player or DM I respect the Wishes and Beliefs of the Seccessions Host..If they don't allow alcohol or smoking then the group don't.

WRONG! Didn't you see the commercials on TV? We're at war with those things! We drink a bit during a DnD session. Not a lot, but it does happen. Usually at the first break we take we end up getting something to drink and some snacks.

Only time we've really had problems with it was when we had a friend of mine and her husband come play a game with us. She got pretty smashed and pretty much annoyed the lot of us.

There was one interesting time when we'd been playing and the DM got up and grabbed a drink. I said, "It can't be good when the DM gets up in the middle of a session and starts drinking heavily." Heh. Was pretty amusing.

But except the one time alcohol has never been a problem for us.

Depends on the game. Humorous games almost require a beer or two while more serious game work best sober.
If the gamers are going to do things where they risk life and limb and there is a chance for death, they're better off without the suds or they'll regret it later.

But since there seems to be a desire for rules, here's what I use:

Jester's Rules for D&D and Beer
* One beer is fine (unless you're the lightest of light-drunks).
* Two is okay if you've eaten.
* Three is okay if it's been spaced out between 2-3 other non-alcoholic drinks.
* Four is okay if it's been spaced out and part of an all-nighter so the first beer or two has already been 'returned'.
* "Five is right out."
* When bringing beer make sure there's enough for everyone, but not enough that everyone can have 4.
* One or two people will abstain; bring enough for everyone to have 1 and a couple extras so everyone drinking can have 2. Estimate 1.5 beers per player.
* Only drink when others are also drinking. You do not want to be the only one hammered.

Remember, the number of beers you drink is not limited by the number you tell yourself you're going to drink but by the number of beers in the house. If there is more alcohol there it will seem like a good idea to consume it after beer #3.

We have a friend who was occasionally a gamer... he preferred to game drunk. It was not fun for the rest of us. His focus was crappy and he took waaaaayyyyyy too long to take his turns.

When he started "bragging" about his meth problem we stopped seeing him. I don't know who games with him now.

I don't normally drink during our weekly game (usually about 4.5-5.5 hours on Monday night) though a couple of the other players and the GM will often have 1 or 2 beers. They never show any outward effects that I can see so it doesn't bother me - though if someone did drink too much it would be annoying I think.

Last week was an exception for me because I brought some home brew to the game and we all had a tall glass of it. It's running about 6+% alcohol, according to my rather inaccurate measurements, so it's pretty stout stuff (compared to the PBR my co-gamers usually drink). I admit that we were all a bit more talkative and relaxed after a pint of our homemade swill.

I, and my groups, have no problem with players or even the DM having a drink or two. We're all adults, can handle our alcohol, and don't drink in excess (usually) when gaming.

That said [and I believe I might have already told this story on another alcohol+gaming thread, but it's a good one and involves mead, which someone else brought up...], we recently had to come up with a new rule for the Ebisu Gaming Group.

This was a few months back, and we met at Ebisu Station as usual for our second session using the Conan d20 game. angryman was talking about mead, and GMSteve mentioned that the liquor store along the way likely had it.

So we go in there, and since I speak the best Japanese, I asked the clerk if they had any (having to explain what it was in detail). The clerk went and asked her manager, and what do you know, they had it. So GMSteve bought a bottle, and we went back to play the game.

angryman was the GM, and also drank most of the mead. Bad combination. Before too long, our characters were up to their eyeballs in poison-arrow shooting Picts, and we had a TPK. :D [We weren't upset, because we were using a new ruleset and it gave us a chance to try out different characters.]

While angryman claims that he intended to swarm us with Picts from the beginning, we still decided on a new rule--NO MEAD (okay, just a little) FOR THE GM!!! :pint:

Our group can't get through a session without a few Potions of Roleplaying.

As a result we have a really good time. Yes, we are more easily distracted, yes we make more mistakes, yes we make slower progress, but in the end we have fun and it suits our rather laid-back commitment and attitude to the game.

I did try to stop drinking once when it was my turn to DM, but the others quickly figured out that the less I drank, the more often their characters died. Soon after I was placed on a regular prescription of Coopers.

One of the advantages of being an older gamer.

Then there's my friend who tends to sing when drunk, which would be fine but imagine a cross between an East London accent and a Wounded Walrus.

So therefore, no booze at the table if I can help it.

I'll drink when I dm but only to the point everyone else is. There are times when we've all had one or two and times when we've gotten sloshed to the point of no return. (Usually those games are out of continuity lol). My stance on weed is I'm all for it. If we're playing at my house I'll sit and smoke it while playing. If it's at a friends I'll smoke it then go play. I don't smoke when I DM though. Not because it makes it harder just cause it kills the buzz and that's a waste of weed (too much to keep track of). Harder drugs are out cause I've seen what they can do to people. The thought of a former friend of mine strung out on meth playing DnD still makes me shudder.
I know a lot of people counter the weed argument with it's illegal to which I counter with so? It's only illegal if you get caught :schemes: . Not to mention it's no worse than booze, the only reason it's illegal in the first place is cause they can't find a reliable way to tax it.

I've been playing since college way back in the days when everyone in college was old enough to drink. (Back in 1980 when the age was 18 and I was 19.) Being drunk tends to ruin most everything, so the question has to be that of drinking "in moderation." If you can't then don't. It's as simple as that.

I remember a time when we used to have a gaming group who met in the back room of a local Denny's (or similiar type resturant chain) and I can give you stories of how munchies would seriously get in the way of gaming.

Frankly, I love to drink and roleplay. And I'm not talking about booze per se, I'm talking liquids here. I've drank my share of soda as much as I've drank my share of beer. I love a good wine, mead, and barrel fermented hard whiskey. I'm kind of odd in that the strong the stuff, the slower I drink it. And if I'm role playing then I'm drinking it even slower, being that I can only do one thing at a time and I'm normaly there for the roleplaying first.

I do draw the line with smoking. I used to work in a BINGO hall, so I know the annoyance of second hand smoke. No weed either. Not even incense. Well perhaps if you use it as a part of an animated smoking dragon ornament, but not every session!

am I the only person who maintains a strict rule of no alcohol/drugs during games play? in order to enjoy the game and play well, you must avoid intoxication at all costs! maintain a clear mind, and the game will improve greatly... that's my opinion - anybody agree?

No, I don't agree. However, I fully support the idea that too much alcohol and D&D do not mix. A bit of scoial drinking while playing is fine, it even helps some people loosen up and get into things like "funny voices" for their PCs, but it should never be enough to make you stupid. That goes for anything in life, actually.

Asa to drugs, it's not an issue. Most of us outgrew it years ago. One person in our group uses marijuana medicinally, the rest don't partake at all, or very rarely, and never at a session.

My groups have always been above legal drinking age. The worst problem of having some beers while we gamed was that it made our mapping bad [actually, our maps were horrid but I blame beer for at least some of it]. None of us ever drank enough to really be drunk, and DMing took too much attention to get more than one beer done anyway.

Now, one time a friend came to a game at my apartment and announced that he had smoked something in the car before he came in and he was 'stoked about DMing'. He was very giddy and it seemed to us that this was not conducive to his DMing.

He sat down in the 'DM's chair'; it was a large comfortable chair in my living room with wide, flat arms that were great for resting books on while DMing. Well he was talking about how dangerous things were going to be, so I, 5'9" around 200 lbs, stood by the chair, then started whispering to him, loudly enough so everyone could hear me, "Kill them, kill them all!" I told him I was his quasit familiar and climbed up on the arm of the chair patting his head and whispering some of the things he had said, along with continuing the "kill them" refrain. This either freaked him because of the drug or due to fear at the possibility of my crushing him he bolted from the chair! No one ever came to my place stoned again, or at least didn't announce it to everyone! ;)

All but one of the guys I play with are underage and don't smoke or drink, so it' never been an issue at my table. We're not an especially focused group, and we all snack while playing, so I wouldn't be overly worried about someone having a beer or two---but putting up with drunks is not my idea of fun, and smoking (cigarettes, weed, or anything else) inside is a big no-no.

Our old DM used to smoke a few cones before he started the game, and continued smoking during. Despite this, he was still a decent DM and (suprise, surprise) his descriptions were pretty cool sometimes.

However, he was a smoker of like thirty years so that probably dont count that much. We tried drinking once....needless to say it didnt work out.

DM: You enter the wizard's chamber. A table rests in the centre, bubbling vials of liquid are scattered amongst scrolls of....
Me: I drink one!
DM: ...seriously?
Me: Stay away from my wife!

Thankfully, the DM let me resurect my char from that incident. Damn single digit rolls....

Approaching two decades of gaming, I cannot recall ever having an issue with drinking or smoking at the table. Have there been times when I or someone else had too much . . sure. So one session gets messed up, no big deal.

However, I believe someone mentioned Pabst Blue Ribbon earlier. I don't think I could stomach someone drinking that at my table, but I'd be willing to go get them something decent.

If any of you are talking about American beer (I use the term lightly), then you should be able to down about 9 of them before you start to feel a thing.

Like what a lot of people (mature) are saying, as long as you are not disruptive and are contributing to the session, then there is nothing wrong with imbibing a little.

I started playing in the 80’s, and it seems a lot of the people that played then were quite fond of the old “Maui-Wowy”.

My group generally knocks back a few beers over the course of a night's gaming, with no ill effects. But I did once have a friend who got so wasted (booze and "other" substances involved) while DMing that he basically had to rule that the session "never happened" and undo all cahnges that occurred (I wasn't there, but I think he arbitrarily killed half the group, and gave artifacts to the others).

In the first place, we're a group of 6 friends who play dnd (all about 22 yrs old, studying at university). Actually dnd comes at the second place, next to having fun. A typical dnd evening starts with some good belgian fries at about 19.30 (there's always one or two people who are slow with eating their fries. When the first ones are already done with their fries, they try to pick 'some' fries of the slow ones :P )
In the mean time the fridge has been filled with a crate of Jupiler (normal belgian beer, ~5%) and a few cola's (bottles of 20cl, best taste and best 'bang' for the buck (literally bangs when you open them unconventionally, you're not allowed to use a bottle-opener :) ).
Together with the beer and cola, we eat all kinds chips, nuts, grills, tucs, ...
Outside, there's usually another crate stand-by. One week it's, needed, the other week not.

Another drug some people use from time to time is coffee.

So yes, we do drink a few beers during gaming.

Some of it, yes, but the main point in its favour is that large-scale British factory beer is far and away better than other nations' factory beer. That said, my favourite beer in the world is indeed a UK beer, one Hobgoblin Ale from Wychwood Breweries. I used to be quite fond of Watney's Red Barrel, and I was a fanatic deveotee of Whiteways Cider, but you can no longer find either here in Canada, at least not here in Toronto. :(

German beer is okay but much of it pushes the limit of too strong. Anything in the 8% range is getting into malt liquot category. Beer should ideally be in the 5%-7% range. More than that and the taste of the liquor can start to overhwelm the other flavours.

I'm not overly fond of Belgian beer. Far too hoppy and reliant on bitterness and sweetness for my taste. I like 'em more mellow and nutty.

You know, I hear people say stuff like this a lot... American beer doesn't have any less alchohol to it than any other country's beer. 4-5%. Average here, average everywhere else. We get a bad rap because our majour beer brands tastes like hell... But, so do the major brands of pretty much every non-European country.

Canada: Molson, Labatt
Australia: Foster's
Mexico: Corona, Dos Equis

All tastes like crap. There's more, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

There's plenty of good beers in America, but no one pays any attention to them, just because they're convinced that European beers are the best there is. Try some of the stuff from Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, Rogue Brewing, and tell me that all American beer is watered down crap.

Sorry, I get a little tired of people judging my country's beer selections based on Budweiser. No hard feelings. :)

(By the way, Smithwick's and Guinness, best European beers. Who needs Stella Artois?)

On topic: I usually don't drink at my games, because nearly all of my players are teetotalers who really hate alchohol, so I don't do it out of respect. If I were with a drinking group, however, i'd gladly slam back a few brewskies.

Yes there is nothing so horrid as mass produced US beer. (And you need to use that term loosely, Budwieser for example is made with ... rice. It's nothing but watered down bad sake.) However there does exist good beer that's made by real people who know how to brew beer in the US.

We have a number of brew pubs all around that do make good beer.

Still this doesn't mean that I don't look forward to business trips in the UK. Why even the beer without the booze is light years above that in the US.

Last time I heard, Stella Artois was the #1 keg beer sold in Manhatten (NY).
Angered Roach

08-30-06, 12:20 PM
Maybe it's just a matter of taste, but I never really got the appeal of Stella Artois. Taste-wise, it's nothing special. Maybe it's just the mystique of drinking some Belgian beer with a long and proud brewing history or whatever, but, maybe i'm just missing something. Now, Heinekin and Warsteiner, those are good European lagers.

U.K. beers. When I went to the U.K., I actually had a hard time finding a domestic beer in any of the bars I went to, except for the cask ales. All I remember seeing in the English bars were John Smith's and Tetley's. Tetley's is pretty good, however. Scotland was a different story. I love Belhaven's Best.

Still, the best beer in the world. Beamish Stout, from County Cork, Ireland. Now, there's a beer. Guinness Extra Stout or Smithwick's is a close second.

We game at one of the player's house, who has a beer fridge system. It sees lots of use, some of us drink about 5 mugs a night while others drink 1 or 2 and some drink none. Never affected our game at all.

There are 9 of us in our group, 7 are legal to drink. I have no issue with people having a beer or two during the game. Heck, I DM the game and there are some nights when I really want one because of how things are going. All kidding aside, I see no problem with having a beer or two at the table as long as no one is getting drunk and then driving home. I agree with the other posters here when they said a beer or two helps the people relax and open up the role play. The players mostly drink Canadian imports or Zima like drinks, I prefer Guinness and/or Harp.

Many beer makers also sell lower alcohol versions of their beers for certain states that have laws against selling beers above 3.2%. They're called "low-point" beers :yuck:

There are also "dry counties" in the U.S. where no alcohol is sold, period. Haha, bet a lot of gaming groups in those areas don't drink while playing either. Unless they sneak beer back from the next county over :)

Well now, having grown up in a family full of pot head democrats, I drank alot and smoked quite the bit of weed in my younger years. I dont mind people drinking in any of my games, but i personally dont smoke pot anymore. I had a real bad experience when roleplaying back in 1990 just before I joined the Army. Me and all my pot head buddies were sitting at the animal house (a house rented by 3 pot-head 18 year old alcoholics) playing some good old fashion AD&D. I was finishing up a year's worth of parole from two DWI's and I always used to carry a visine bottle full of bleach in my back-pack to pass those occassional urinalysis's. (bleach actually used to make the old tests in-conclusive). Well to make a long story short, I got really baked and somehow the visine bottle fell out of my back-pack onto the kitchen floor. As we took a "Mortal-Combat" Sega Genisis game break, my buddy Dave stumbled upon the visine bottle. The next thing I heard from him, in the kitchen, was a blood curdling scream of agony followed by "My Eyes!!! My Eyes!!!". Welp, Dave decided to clear up his red-eyes with my trusty visine bottle full of bleach. We had to rush him to the hospital after flushing his eyes out, and just barely saved his eye sight. (fortunately he had in contacts and merely chemically burned the area around the contacts). To this day, I have never told Dave the bottle was mine. So the moral of the story is, if you smoke and play D&D, watch out for those strange bottles of visine!!! :mage:

As far as the strongest beers out there, you guys should try drinking 6 steins full of tripple-boch visen brewed in Amberg-Germany sometime. The alcohol content is 25% (Im not joking either)The last time I did, I blacked out for 6 hours, pulled a girls pants down on a techno discotek dance floor, and got my arse beat down by the girls bartending husband and his bouncer lackies before my Army buddies jumped in. HUA!!! :pint:

Therefore,

you think this stuff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akvavit) would pass muster? is this a D&D themed drink? a couple of buddies and I finished a bottle back when we were all about 15 years old - we were in the kitchen of a friend's house (playing poker, not D&D) --- regardless, it all made us feel like fire-breathing viking warriors...

My players tend to actually act out conversations and use their character voices with a little beer in their system.

Alcohol has created rough situations at my games a couple of times, from a player passing out to getting angry and beligerant (sp?) to totally not being able to pay attention (all the same player). The rest of the players agreed something should be done about it, but didnt like the idea of a maximum number of beers, etc.

I suggested that the players can only drink if their PC is drinking in game. They thought the idea was funny enough that we may try it and see how it goes, but I think it will only be a matter of time before the one player realizes the majority of the game will not be spent in a tavern and will have his PC begin carrying multiple bottles of alcohol with him on their adventures.

and draco, you are welcome as long as you don't mind smoking on the porch (i have an infant so...no smoking inside :)) :)
Well, since I've yet to play with a group that didn't have the "smoking is outside only" rule, it wouldn't be a let-down. I still want the ash-tray on the table, though, even if I can't use it for its designed purpose. The crystal ones make good paper-weights.

All my party drink, but tend to in moderation. We used to game at my flat, where you could drink and smoke, but we've shifted venue, so smoking outside now. Although, that might be good for me (sic). I'm pretty lucky as all my group are quite chilled. Although, we have a player who'se tongue slackens a little and a few that if we game for a long time booze does slow things down a bit.

I've got an Order of Dagon etched ashtray, it rocks, but a bit too small, so I favour the 50's pin-up ashtray.

It's better without the sugar though, the elaborate "ritual" of preparing absinthe is to draw attention to the fact you're drinking it, as opposed to just getting on with it.

Actually, the point of the ritual is the same as any ritual: it gets you into the mindset and heightens the experience precisely because there is that delay. It's the self imposed delay between the desire of a thing and reaching for that thing. :)

As far as whether it's better with or without the sugar, well, that's highly dependant upon the absinthe in question. A good Swiss la bleue is usually better without the sugar, as are some of the Pernod clones, but many of the Czech and German brands (and let's not even get started on the UK brands) are less artfully constructed, lacking in the proper nuances.

I smell some type of agenda here. Why should you be so suprised that not everyone games just like you do?

Your DM is AWESOME. But he should have to do a shot every time he kills a character.

I've never drank and went to a D&D game, but I did get blitzed and go to one before. It was cool because I could visualize all the descriptions in my head as the DM was reading them, but I had a hard time remembering the crunchy bits. I'm such a lightweight. As for drinking, I'm a wild drunk, so the most I could ever handle would be a few beers. Have yet to try it though, I'll see what the rest of my group thinks, though we're all underage.

And why is that? Because they are illegal? But you clearly dont mind drinking, so by your rationale if marijauna was legal then we could voice an opinion on it?

I don't think any of us would want to advocate any illegal activity, or be mean to anyone. I don't "per se" have issues with marijuana, but, because of the nature of this board, maybe High Times have a Forum.

So to steer things back on course, the best way to drink champagne is when the PC's have come to the end of a long campaign and vanquished their foes - crack the bottle and pass it round, drinking straight from the bottle. This is especially fun when your girlfriend plays and you can poke her belly so she spits champagne everywhere. The throw dice at each other.
Atirakis

09-07-06, 04:33 PM
Not wanting to advocate illeagal activity is understood, but the way it seemed was there was alot of support for drinking while playing d&d and alot of "dont even mention it" for anything else.

I do not advocate anyone doing anything they dont want to do or shouldnt do, but at the same time some silly prohibition law isnt a valid reason to advocate alcohol while damning marijuana.

I think you will find a fair number of gamers that enjoy altered mind states while playing. I certainly know a few.

Sure I'll give a defense. No wait I'll give a better one. It's smoke. It gets on everything. Beer only gets on your clothes if you friend throws up on you.

I used to work in a bingo parlor. Had to have a seperate wardrobe for working at bingo because those clothes always smelled of smoke no matter how many times you washed them.

Plus the fact that it's vile smoke. Can't stand the stuff.

All my gamers and myself smoke, but I (DM) try to maintain a sensible limit for my intake of alcohol ie, 2-3 beers until the final hour of gaming, then just drink at will. However, I have found (moral (sic) qualms aside) if I "smoke" I lose concentration far too easily. It's not wrong, it just doesn't work for me in that environment.

I know smoking in general is a stinky-horrible habit and I do respect non-smokers wishes, even in my own home; I don't think it's fair for me to smoke around asthmatics, people eating etc, just got lucky with an ever-smoking party (+2) - sorry, couldn't resist.
Andron

09-08-06, 04:10 PM
We used to take smoke breaks during the lulls in the adventure. This was cigarettes, pipes, and the occassional cigar, mind you. I smoked for 25+ years and finally quit 2 years ago. Just got tired of spending the money and feeling like crap. (Luckily I was one of the few who can quit cold turkey.) It was a rare occassion that anyone was able to smoke at the table so to speak. we were always mindful of other people's wishes. I don't think anyone ever came to play stoned or high on whatever... I'm pretty good at figuring that out from years as a misspent youth. But we never did that during the game. Like I said in an earlier post, most of us have a beer or two, Zima, Mead, wine, etc... but no one ever gets drunk. Everyone needs to drive home at the end of the session. (Except for the host and myself since I live around the corner.) I have no issue with whatever anyone wants to do, I'm just really not into it anymore. I'd prefer it if people weren't stoned or drunk during the game, and to my knowledge it's never been an issue. Besides, if you're the only one sober it's really difficult to deal with those that aren't. Drunk and high people are annoying...Unless you're one of them..:D

Let's get back to the OP's original post here. Alcohol and DnD do not mix.

Face it, pour alcohol on any DnD book or Mini and what do you get? Wet stuff and a blatant abuse of alcohol. I am not for alcohol abuse. Alcohol should be well treated and drunk from real glass.

Now here are things that do miw very well (drink) with alcohol and the specific type of alcohol:

Pepsi and Rum
OJ and Vodka
OJ and Sloe Gin
Tonic and Gin
Pineapple Juice and Sloe Gin
Everything in a big pot (aka Jungle Juice)

Now we have it first hand that that you shouldn't mix your alcohol with your DnD materials.

Get a book on bartending to find out was does mix well (drink) with alcohol.

it is possible to have a drink and not get drunk. I don't know that anyone who is taking a drug isn't trying to get stoned.Getting into semantics: what's possible to happen and what the intentions are are different.

Just as it's possible to drink and not get drunk, it's possible to smoke pot and not get stoned. And just as people do some drugs to get high, so do people drink to get drunk. And just as people drink for social reasons, so do others do drugs only for social reasons.

They're ALL intoxicants and ALL drugs. Some are more legal and more socially acceptable (depending on your nation), but ANYone who does them can do so for many reasons, and they can still do them and not be heavily affected.

As for my two cents on the topic? I don't care as long as you're not disrupting gameplay. I can't drink while I DM; my concentration on the game goes out the window. Intoxication as a player is easier to handle, but be mindful and respectful of the people around you. Some groups stop religiously at 4:20 to roll a fattie. Some groups have players whose religion forbids alcohol. Some groups have chain-smokers playing in the asthmatic's house. Common sense and courtesy -- on all sides -- are what it's all about.

I don't like gaming with anyone drunk, I don't like gaming with anyone stoned. My point is, it is possible to have a drink and not get drunk. I don't know that anyone who is taking a drug isn't trying to get stoned.
Ive known people who only drank a few and were already past the point of intelligent conversation. Ive known people, myself included, that can smoke all night and never once does the intelligence meter drop.

You are placing sterotypes on drugs based off of some sort of just say no ad campaign.

Alcohol doesn't work for me - or my group. I've tried to play straight, messed up and in between... and the only way it works for me are when I play straight.

You wanna drink or do drugs in my group? Find another group. End of story.

And that works for you. On the other hand if you have a problem with me or my players smoking then find another group. End of story.

Let's start attributing various drinks to races.

Ale is drank by darves -- dwarven clerics make wine and strong "holy water".

For gnomes it's dark beer, and including mixes like "dark beer floating on cider".

Elves stick to light but strong wines, wine/beer mixes, and herbal beers. A few drink lagers.

Goblinoids stick to strong, cheap stuff. Way more of a kick than "high gravity" and malt liquors.

Sloe gin types are drank by giants, humans, and halflings.

Mead is drank by dwarven and human barbarians, sometimes by elves, and occasionally by clerics in temples of several deities. Some pirate ships carry the stuff too.

Rum is drank by dwarves, human pirates, half-orcs, and halflings.

Vodka type drinks are made by centaurs, and sometimes by giants. They both drink lagers too.

Kobolds drink rock-filtered wines, pungeant sherrys, a salty variant of mead, and root lagers._ *

You think a round of 3.5 combat takes a long time with 4+ players, just try it toasted...seriously, it seems like an eternity. :cloud9:

Of course alcohol and dnd mix especially if you don't meet up very often because you come up with so many random rules and stuff when you're drunk. Not getting drunk while DMing or playing just makes you an uptight *******. Drinking allows you to loosen up and really enjoy the game. I remember once i killed the big boss with a chicken. Noew who sober would have thought of that when disarmed. Nuff sed.

We always played sober, except for 1 session...
Our mage kobold got a giant bat for mount.
And our archer killed 3 drows with one arrow. Their head exploded. Hey, he used "True Strike"!

After that, nobody was really in the mood to play...

Oh yeah, one of my friends DMed a session high. It was somewhat interesting, but weird. The BBEG wanted to extract the essence of our nature, so we had to go in an alternate reality to change our soul by confronting our nature... :mymy: :twitch:
ooookkkkk...It was fun, though.

I don't have a real problem one way or the other, so long as no-body gets trashed. As it is, my group (and I) have trouble focusing anyway.

My players try to get my drunk, because they found out that I tend to get a little more genersous when handing out XP at the end of the night...

I guess our group is evil and permissive.

We don't allow drugs, since thats illegal and inappropriate, so use it up before you get there, leave it in your car, whatever. Just don't come unable to play.

Alochol during the session is fine; drunk is not -- so know your limits. So we don't limit what anyone drinks and we've never had a problem with drunk players.

Some of our best RP sessions were after everyone had some to drink (everyone was legal, no underage drinking with us). The XP awards definitely get more generous when we drink though.

Not every session even has booze during it. sometime we do an theme session...various teas...various coffees...various soft drinks...flavored waters...sometimes its various foods too...sushi...bbq...chinese...we try out different things we may not have tried before...nothing like peer pressure :)

Nobody in my group minds cigarette smoke, and everybody in my group likes drinking. Erego, cigarettes and booze are a regular fixture on the table. And for a bunch of chain-smoking drunks, we're all relatively mature so no problems have ever arisen. And when you get down to it, getting together to play D&D isn't much different from getting together to watch a hockey game or play music, both of which are activities where cigarettes and alcohol make frequent appearances.

The only time it's ever gotten out-of-hand was during a scene at the festival thrown in the adventuring group's honor after they drove off a hostile tribe of hobgoblin bandits, where the PCs all got a little too trashed, and we all got a little too in-character, and hilarity ensued. So even that was fun out-of-hand.
