D&D and Fantasy Architecture [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-27-06, 12:13 AM I’m running a new campaign and wanted to get some input on Fantasy Architecture to get some ideas.

What I mean is, for example; in the Lord of The Rings movies, the world of Middle Earth really came alive with the grand high-fantasy architectural backdrops like the city of Minas Tirith, The Dwarf Halls of Khazadum, etc.

It seems to me that much of the art of D&D lacks good high-fantasy backdrops and buildings; usually it’s the ruined stump of a castle or the cluttered lab of some hedge-wizard – not very inspiring.

I checked the web for real-world classical examples like the Pantheon and the Parthenon, but I wondered if anyone knew of any good sites on the web that I could view of artist’s renderings of fantasy style buildings and architecture?

02-27-06, 02:35 AM I cannot offer any sites for you, but I agree with you about their being a need for more artwork depicting architecture in D&D.

fantasy city (13,000 hits)
fantasy cities (607 hits)
fantasy buildings (840 hits)
fantasy art landscape (838 hits)

02-27-06, 08:28 PM You might also wnt to search for dreamscapes or art work that depicts the environments dreamed by their illustrators. You frequently find both facinating and possibly fersome images in the minds of artists like Brom and H.R. Giger.

You might want to look at the city scapes from the Ravnica lands in the latest "Magic: the Gathering" set.
