Found this announcement tonight:

Through the agreement, Hasbro has obtained the rights to develop products based on Marvel's universe of more than 5,000 characters in a wide range of toy and game categories -- including action figures, role play and preschool toys, board games and puzzles. The agreement covers both the classic comic book look of the characters as well as product lines inspired by Marvel-themed movies.

The relevance to D&D is this:
Remember when TSR had Marvel Superheroes Roleplaying Game?
(Before it became that stupid Sega card game.)
Now that Marvel is back in bed with the maker of D&D, perhaps Marvel d20 is not too far away? :D

Not much, if at all--if they do anything, it'll likely be a separate line, much like the STAR WARS game. Major licensors prefer to keep fairly close control of their properties. How mechanically similar they would be may well depend on how "high-level" D20 SPEC is-- some supers games tend to work better with low-powered supers, and may well have trouble dealing with characters like Magneto, Thanos, or The Mighty Thor.

We'll have to see.

OMG between D&D (including eberron, and minis), d20 modern, and possebly a marvel RPG, I might as well start signing my paycheck over to WotC. :ayyyy!:

d20 Transformers. That's what I really want to hear about.

I'd still buy a Marvel Universe d20 book. It'd be too tempting to pass up.

Well that's a major case of Good News/Bad News for me...

The good news being that I work at a comic book store...

And the bad news being that I run the games at said comic book store, so I really don't know much at all about comics and not nearly enough to GM a Marvel RPG... Hopefully it won't be popular in my area and I might be able to get away with not having to run a campaign that would assassinate my credibility...

Oh well... Until the RPG actually does come out, I'll still be Dreamland Comic's resident game guru, and I'll be paid to DM campaigns for the duration... So yup, I'm all set. :P

Is your barbarian not stupid, destructive, and offensive enough? Skip the middleman and make your own Incredible Hulk! CHA and INT of 3, Sure! Take your very own non copyright infringing multicolored brute on the town, then smash it!

All classes will be replaced with superhero variants.

"Yeah Im a level 14 Cyclops with a two level Captain America dip. Yknow, for the patriotic grace."

When DnD gets together with Capcom, let me know.

Really, Mutants & Masterminds 2E has everything you need except the Marvel Logo to play a game set in the Marvelverse. Its classless, hitpointless system works very well at simulating comic book style gameplay.

Bah, 1e M&M for me all the way, baby.

But even so, as an avid player of TSR's MSHA for the last...oh god I'm old...I'll pick up anything WotC puts out for Marvel anyways.

Converting the Power Cosmic into D&D... just one more thing to make my DM hate my existence even more. I'll be the Platinum Surfer!!! :D

It's been done, at least partially. Living room entertainment did the Street Fighter World Tournament d20 game.

Did Sega sold Marvel game carts for Dreamcast?

;)

Well, technically, we have a new maker of D&D, though I don't know if some of the designers of Marvel Super-Heroes Basic and Advanced RPGs are still employed at the new workplace.

I'm just wondering why you indulge to post this in the D&D General forum. You're not really suggesting that we use D&D d20 engine -- as opposed to d20 Modern or an entirely different d20 System rule engine -- for a licensed Marvel supers rpg, are you?

I might buy it, but I doubt it to be honest. I do not like M&M or Hero systems when it comes to playing out super hero games, and I will just stick to this (http://www.heroplay.com/features/rules/marvel.php). Most especially because I can get it at the price of the Kniko's printing.

Hey there.

While I would love to see a new Marvel role-playing game (Is my "Amazing" strength better then "Incredible"?), I'm not sure that this is what the announcement was talking about. As gamers, when we see "Role Play" we think of games such as D&D. When non-gamers (parents) see the words "Role Play" they think of little billy dressing up as Spiderman and spraying silly string around the house. Since it's lumped in with "preschool toys" and not "board games", I think that it's refering to billy and the silly string.

But since they have the license to do board games, this might still translate into other table top games (which RPGs are considered), which would be really cool.

Not an important post, just an observation...

Now, you are fully aware that those products are still copyrighted, and posting links to copyrighted material downloads is against the CoC, correct?

I remember the TSR Marvel RPG. There was no stat numbers. It was based on types of descriptions of your ability: like your STR could be puney or out of this world. your INT would be like peon to genius.

also if you know palladiumbooks they make a game called heros unlimted was is a d20 based superhero game which was good when I played it 15 years ago.

also 15 years ago we played palladiums version of D&D and dismissed it becuase of the D20 system, what a twist of fate.

Im really not looking foward to this simply because, its hard enough to write rules for magic, could you imagine governing superpowers and combat, not to mention pisonics. Or superman type powers such as invulnerability.

The old TSR Marvel RPG did have stat numbers.
You had a stat array;
Fighting, Agility, Strength, Endurance, Reason, Intuition, and Psyche.
These stats ranged (Normally) from 1 to 100. The average human is about a 6, and the absolute pinnacle of natural human ability is about 30. The Numbers were what was important not the adjectives used to describe them. The adjectives were just there to give some comic book four color flavor. Thus you had a different descriptor for each increment (1-4 weak, 5-7 average, 7-10 strong, 10-20 excellent, and so on). The basic mechanic behind the whole game was to roll percentile dice, the result of which was then found on a chart in the book, based on the skill score.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Superhero%27s_rpg

Despite people dismissing the game out of hand because of little things lke the adjective descriptors for skill levels (What was so hard about Amazing = 50? The book even gave you a list of what numeric score equated to what term, and always presented the two together ie "Spider-Man has a strength of Amazing (50)."). The game is deceptivley simple, and is an awesome way to get new people into the RPG hobby. It's easy enough that younger kids can understand and enjoy it (My daughter had a character and was playing this game at the age of 6), and most adults can learn the game from scratch in under a half hour. I recommend picking up an old copy to anyone, if for no other reason than it's a neat piece of RPG and comic History.

That being said, the Marvel game using the SAGA rules was absolutley horrid, but that was mainly because the SAGA rules were horrid to begin with.

I hope the new game, if one materializes, is d20 based. The system seems to be variable enough to handle a superpower game.

What the bloody hell are you talking about?

The D20 system didn't exist 15 years ago.

Heroes Unlimited is not d20 based.

As pointed out already, you do not remember the MSH game, as it almost always had numbers after descriptors, except in spaces where the default base number ought to be used.
