I've decided to start my own D&D based song thread. Any song you can think of is acceptable as long as it fits the class and/or race/monster variety or character and doesn't have an explicit title. Blind Guardian's loaded up with Tolkien imagery (way too many of their songs; Nightfall comes to mind as a simple example) and has done songs based off of Dragonlance (Soulforged) and Arthurian legend (Mordred's Song), plus their famous Bard's Song caputres a minstrel essence like very few modern songs do. Their style is rather slow by metal standards, but they were one of, if not the, original fantasy metal bands. (Yes, "fantasy metal" is a common enough term.) If you like LotR imagery but want something HEAVY, Amon Amarth is an alternative (it's been described as "viking death metal"). Hammerfall's been dubbed "the Templars of Heavy Metal". They've got several songs that work beautifully for pretty much any warrior-type; I'd suggest looking up "Destined For Glory" if you're looking for a simple example. They've written a lot of music that works for many different roles right there. Manowar... well, damn, that's a guilty pleasure right there. They're practically an institution. If you already know about Manowar, you're probably kicking yourself that you didn't mention it in the first post. If you didn't know about them... look 'em up. Toss a random word from brutal fantasy ("blood", "battle", "glory", "sword", "warrior", and so on) and chances are you'll find a song with it in either the title or the chorus. Be warned that Manowar's lyrics can be incredibly cheesy, but they make up for it with style. (As I said, guilty pleasure. "Dawn of Battle" is a typical example.) There's others that are somewhat less heavy on average (Rhapsody, Sonata Arctica*, Kamelot, etc) that work for an assortment of different styles. And none of this delves into gothic metal (Nightwish (a personal favorite), Within Temptation, Epica, etc) or Stratovarius (causes way too many arguments amongst metal-heads). I don't even bust out the music that was created explicitly FOR fantasy (Avantasia: The Metal Opera, for instance, which is essentially the band Edguy on a solo project telling a fantasy story through music). Hope that helps. (EDIT: I finally checked out the original thread... one of its big suggestions is the anthem Warriors of the World United as an overture for nearly any adventurer. This is actually a Manowar classic (http://youtube.com/watch?v=pdWFo_QGjo4). I spent a while above discussing them, and found that interesting.) *Technically, Sonata Arctica does a HUGE range of musical styles, from acoustic sonnets to power rock to heavy metal, about a huge range of topics (ranging from lost love to Judge-Dredd vigilantism to lycanthropy). But the stuff that you would consider fantasy from them -- for instance, Full Moon (http://youtube.com/watch?v=KmA4nypfEvs) -- is top-notch.
