The second incarnation of the D&D Basic Game recently hit the shelves and I just want to know if the map it includes is differnt from the map included in the first D&D Basic Game (the one with the Black Dragon).

Thank you.

Thank you but what's Zenopus's Dungeon?

The new, 2006 basic game's tiles are different from the 2003 basic game tiles.

Just what I wanted to know. Thank you.

I guess I should ask if the 2006 map is printed on the same material/card stock as the 2003 verison before I spent thirty dollars on twelve miniatures and a handful of dice.

Same size and type of cardstock but the graphics are much nicer and more colorful.

The materials for minis and boards are nice, the dungeon and adventure are nice, but the book is lower quality and the game itself less friendly to beginners (ironically). More friendly to those who already know how to play however.

If their desire was to sell to those who already own the game, good job fulfilling their intent.

If it was to sell to those who have no idea how to play or introduce others...I think it touches a surface, but afterwards they might still not really know how to play that well...if that was their intent, someone needs to be fired from the R&D department or whatever department created this ridiculous set and thought the revision would be better at doing such a thing.

I get the opinion that they want it used in conjunction with the Player's kit, in which case it does the job nicely, but nothing indicates that one is to buy the Player's kit after getting the new and revised basic set...soooo...

But I get the idea that you already own the first basic set, so yes, as the person above already stated, the adventure/map is different and so are the tiles.

In my opinion of course.

I own both basic sets, and I can say that the first one (black dragon) is far superior to the second (blue dragon).

For starters, I was hoping to see full size 8.5x11 sheets for the players again, I thought these were wonderful for showing folks where things were, and they had explainations on the page for what they did. Also, the dice were color coded to the players sheet, so they would be able to tell quickly what die to roll.

The second set only includes one set of dice, where the first gave you 5 sets of dice, so now everyone has to share the same set of dice.

The players are forced to now read a mini booklet for each of their characters to understand how to play them. This is an improvement over the frst set where everyone shared one players book.

The cardboard maps are about the same quality as the first set, as are the minis. I haven't run anyone through the new adventure yet, so I can't provide feedback on that aspect.

What I would love to see is something of a blending of the two sets. I think if you are just starting out, the first set is way better, and buy the second set as a follow on. If you know how to play the game already, and are teaching it to others, the second set might be ok, but I still think I prefer the first set for this because of the player character sheets.
