Hi

I have only played D & D 3 or 4 times but am getting quite into it. Just a couple of points I would like to clarify to smooth over a couple of issues I've had with the DM.

It says you can drink a potion at any time, does this mean you can drink it during the DM's go?

You cannot end your turn on a chest but can you or the monsters walk through the chests?

If you do a power attack and lose your weapon, does it still work?

I know this is all really basic stuff to you veterans but I would appreciate it if you could help me out.

Potions: Drinking a potion is a standard action (I think) and can only be done on your turn.

Chests: Depends on the size of the chest. A small foot locker, you could step over. The common Pirate-Style chest I'd say was difficult terrain (IE: Jump or tumble check to get over it). Anything bigger, treat as a table.
Things like chests are stuff you should be able to stand on, but I'd rule they'd require a balance check, especially if you intend to stand on them while recieving attacks.

Power Attack: It wouldn't work, but I don't know how yoiu'd lose your weapon mid-power attack. Unless your target readied a disarm action against you. Which isn't actually too bad an idea now I think about it.

Our DM plays that, if you roll a 1, and then roll again and STILL fail to hit the enemy AC, you roll up what happens on a critical fumble chart, and occasionally that is throwing your weapon. But other than the disarm prep, that's the only way I can see it happening.

Anyways, when I first started playing DnD, it took me about two or three months before I stopped asking questions. But after about four or five months, I was able to sometimes correct the DM and know basically all the rules off-hand.

It might be hard at the start, but it's a very fun game (as long as you have a cool group of friends to play it with), I hope you enjoy it

Don't worry about it, hang out here long enough and we'll get you going in the right direction. As for questions, feel free to always ask, in fact I think that if you ask somebody or other has probably done up a quick reference chart for most common actions and how they work.

I don't quite understand actions. What can you do in a go?

Do you have the Player's Handbook 3.5Edition?
If so, go here: p141

That shows you exactly what is a standard action, what is full round, what is move equivalent action, what is a free action, and what is considered 'no action', as well as what provokes Attacks of Opportunity.

Basically, a round is made up of either one standard action and one move action, two move actions, or a full round action.
An example of the first is moving up and making an attack. It is one move action and one attack.
An example of the second is running. You can run up to your max run (4X speed) or another (3X speed) or just take two simple walks.
An example of the latter is usually not seen until you get two attacks from your Base Attack Bonus. Look at a sixth level fighter. His base attack bonus is 6/1. The soonest level he gets his second attack is on sixth level. If he wants to use his first and second attack in the same round, it's considered a full round action. If he wants to just move and use his first attack (the one with Base Attack Bonus 6) then it is a standard and move action.
