01-12-07, 02:41 PM i havent played d&d for about 20 years and now i am looking to get back into it. when i did play it though i didnt play very long. my question is this; is all the basic gameplay in the 3.5 edition all ill need to start over or do i need the previous editions for rules as well? i hope i worded that correctly for you all to understand what im getting at. if not im sorry and ill monitor this thread as best i can on a daily basis and reword it if necessary. and i hope this is the correct forum category for this thread.

01-12-07, 02:48 PM Can't you at least use the Shift Key Dan? That would make it a bit easier to read.

To play Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 you need the three Core Rulebooks. The 3 Core Books are the Player's Handbook, The Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual.

Many of the rules from the previous editions have been scrapped. So really, you can forget them unless you plan on playing them.

So, yes, all you need are the 3.5 Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual.

3.0 and 3.5 are similar enough that secondary 3.0 books that you buy will work with 3.5 with a minimum of modification, and vice versa. Adapting older rules to 3.x takes quite a bit of work, though there is some stuff online to help it easier.

01-12-07, 03:00 PM You can find a breakdown of 3.5 rules here (http://www.d20srd.org/). I made the switch from 2nd edition to 3.5 about three years ago. There's a learning curve, sure, but nothing you can't adapt to.

If you're interested in the old edition, there are still some fans around. The old edition section of the boards is here (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=54), and Kenzer & Co., which has a license to produce 2nd edition product, runs the excellent AD&D clone Hackmaster. Look them up here (http://www.kenzerco.com/).
