| dagmarthedwarf08-13-05, 02:10 AM | If this is in the wrong section, my apolgies, i didn't really know where to stick it. For my next session The PC's in my campain are attending a Faire, and Im trying to brainstorm for things for my PC's to do there. An arena is of course a must, and Iv'e got a few other ideas, but what would you all think would be fun to do in a D&D faire? thank you all for your imput |
| Jshock_7508-13-05, 09:48 AM | Give everyone something to do. Some ideas off the top of my head: - A "Battle of the Bards" (for anyone who can play an instrument- or at least thinks they can). - The surliest PC in the party is accosted by mimes. - Eating/drinking contests. I have no idea how that would work. - Specialist vendors, selling all that wierd stuff you wanted to introduce into the campaign but couldn't. - A powerful creature breaks out of the menagerie. Only the PCs can stop it. - The fortune teller is using a deck of many things. |
| dagmarthedwarf08-14-05, 03:43 PM | Excellent Ideas! I will defenetly be using those. I just hope my PC's don't set the mimes on fire. |
| jazzman83108-14-05, 05:26 PM | You can also look for an adventure called "Festival at Halbar" for some more complicated festival games. I'm actually going to do that, along with some suggestions from this thread, in our next adventure. I'm not sure where I got this adventure, but it's in Word format. You could try www.dndadventures.com though, I've gotten a lot of stuff from there. One game is like Chutes and Ladders (it tests your ranged attack skills) on is like the luge (it tests your reflexes) and another is kind of a cross between hockey and quidditch. They'd all be easy to impliment into a Faire type encounter. In my current campaign, this festival is going to be taking place in a week and people are traveling from all around. I have a lot of them on the street playing card games (21 works) and dice games (any kind of dice 21 works), just to give it a little better sense of realism. And some of the PC's lost money, which is fun too :) |
| CzarGarrett08-15-05, 09:12 AM | Excellent Ideas! I will defenetly be using those. I just hope my PC's don't set the mimes on fire. You make it seem like that's a bad thing. |
| Nurgan_the_drunked08-15-05, 10:06 AM | Less extreme examples are some fierce monsters in a menagerie, which may or may not get loose (but there'll be a guy who knows a bit about them). Fortune tellers are blatant plot foreshadows using tarots based off the deck of many things: it would make sense in the world that tarot is a copy of the deck, and the card associated with their meanings. It's a bit cheeky them being wrong with their preictions, but they should be vague, and probably misinterpretted. After all, getting attacked by a wyrm black dragon counts as a "meeting a tall dark stranger" in my book. Oooh, if you have an odd race in the party, they could have another member of the race in a freak show, and people try to display the character instead, with some roleplaying involvement with the fate of the "freak". Illusionists creating illusionary monsters that charge people, before disappearing. Hmm. What about a caretaker who's an illusionist trying to get the fair shut down by creating illusions of demons and would have got away with it if.... |
| dagmarthedwarf08-15-05, 06:40 PM | Well if they set the mimes on fire..... actually theyll probably argue it was for a good cause, which i don't think anyone can deny. Excellent ideas so far! This faire is really looking up |
| Ogre4Hire08-15-05, 07:20 PM | Just remember, if you set a mime on fire... They aren't allowed to scream:devil: As a joke, you could always throw in a mime that's been trapped in an invisible box.:D |
| Nurgan_the_drunked08-16-05, 03:32 AM | Nah, not even a mime, just some bloke under a silence spell, with disguise self cast on him (to look like a mime) in an invisible box.... |
| Ringmereth08-16-05, 04:55 PM | Games of skill are a good idea. Like the booths in which you shoot hoops or break plates with baseballs to win a big stuffed animal for your significant other, at real fairs, D&D fairs might have a shooting gallery with illusionary monsters. Robin Hood-esque archery competitions wouldn't be out of place either. And jousting is a must. Entertainers might, beyond the usual bardic music, preform in unusual manners. Animal trainers (bard/ranger multiclass, maybe?), knife throwers, illusionists of all kinds, jugglers, acrobats, clowns, the aforementioned mimes, and even shapechangers (the fantasy equivalent of people in those stiflingly hot animal costumes at amusement parks) might be present. Don't forget the criminal elements as well. Con artists and pickpockets are sure to be present, and more serious criminals might show up if magical items or exotic creatures are present. A good plot hook could be the theft of a wizard's collection of magical beasts, eventually leading to a mad cult that required one of the creatures for a ritual... or something like that. |
| Ectoplasmoid08-16-05, 05:17 PM | Forcecage material component: 1500 gp, Look on mime's face: priceless. If you've got an wizard in the party, do a "Grand Illusion" or a spellduel tournament. Or any manner of swordplay/jousting for the fighter. |
| AlexVADnD08-16-05, 05:17 PM | In one of the Forgotten Realms books, perhaps Magic of Faerun, they have a large section on Magefairs, including a list of plot hooks relating to fairs. |
| dagmarthedwarf08-16-05, 11:03 PM | Excellent! Thank you so much for your imput again, im going to be using alot of these. I can't wait for this session! i think i'll throw in a racetrack and see how that turns out. |
| Hairfoot08-16-05, 11:23 PM | Bobbing for dismembered pixie heads. |
| IceFractal08-17-05, 01:16 PM | If you want a little side plot, you could have the town's mayor be missing and the PCs are trying to find him. But they actually keep passing him, because he's the guy who looks like a mime in the actual invisible box (as mentioned above). I think it would be amusing if the players were search around everywhere and they kept passing this "mime". Maybe one of them talks to the artificer who's behind it and is sold something for an unbelievably low price - which is actually a trap. The next morning, that character is missing, and there are two mimes in invisible boxes. See how long it takes them to figure it out as more of them get trapped this way. |
| Lord Gwydion08-17-05, 08:44 PM | I like IceFractal's idea about the kidnappers! Anyway, if there's going to be a fair, there need to be Dwarves to wrestle. Can't have a fair without wrestling a few Dwarves! For an adventure idea, is the fair to celebrate a seasonal change or a holiday? If so, the Clerics/Druids of the pertinent deity should be performing some sort of ceremony during the festivities. However, the Thieves' Guild that secretly runs the fair is plotting to steal the holy objects in the temple while the Clerics/Druids are off blessing the cornfields (or whatever they might be blessing). The PCs get wind of this plot... |
| dagmarthedwarf08-17-05, 10:35 PM | Yes, i will def be using the kidnapping mime trick And btw, its a faire to celebrate an aniversary of when heros slayed an evil villian from destroying the world and also to celebrate the PC's for killing a Bandit Lord who exploded into a fireball when he died. Took 2 PC's down with him. |
