| VardenErinKenzei04-27-08, 03:32 PM | You read it here first! Take the Firelfy/Serenity story and superimpose it on a D&D-type fantasy world: DragonFly. The Central Planets = Central Continent Border and Rim Planets = Islands Earth-That-Was = Another continent halfway around the world Ecosystem Collapse = Volcano or Ice Age or Both. US and China = Humans and Eladrin Unification War = Same Alliance = Lawful Neutral Empire Independents = Chaotic Good Kingdoms Spaceships = Sailing ships Reavers = Pirates. Or zombies. Or zombie pirates. Mobile undead, anyway Christianity = Worship of one Lawful Good God Bhuddism = Worship of one Neutral Good Philosopher Mal = NG human warlord Zoe = LG elf fighter Wash = CG human rogue Jayne = CN dwarf or half-orc fighter Kaylee = NG halfling rogue Inara = NG half-elf or human rogue or enchantress Simon = CG or NG half-elf cleric or necromancer River = CN or CG half-elf monk/warlock Book = LG human assassin/cleric Firefly-class ships = Dragonfly-class ships; three-hulled catamaran with 4 mainsails in an 'X' or 'double-V' formation. The hull simulates Serenity's general shape, sails suggest a dragonfly. Read and tell me what you think. |

| Raxxman04-27-08, 03:47 PM | Spelljammer.... :D That's what I think, Serenity was a Tradesman. Also I don't really think Wash was a rogue, more so an expert. Otherwise, I'm not really sure the Alliance could be considered Neutral, they experimented on their own people without their knowledge. Abducted people for psionic research etc etc. |

| Raxxman04-27-08, 04:44 PM | attempting encourage psionics/magic etc is a far cry from taking children under false pretenses, lying to parents and performing experiments on them, trying to turn them into assassins. |

| Raxxman04-27-08, 07:02 PM | ack! Spot is a cross class skill :( Anyway, the premise of Firefly is broad enough to fit into several genres, as clearly shown by being a western in space. Such a campaign can be diverse but would require a fair amount of work from the DM I reckon, with new places nearly every day, lots of work required to make them all unique enough to not just be 'another port'. Firefly style adventures basically boil down to 'Steal A from rich person' or 'work a trade contract' with lots of swashbuckling bravado. Also looking at your alignments I'd also figure Mal as a CG. In many ways he's the polar opposite of Zoe, and he's always trying to 'stick it to the man' and I fail to recall a single time where he was bothered about which side of the law he was on. But that's just me. |
| VardenErinKenzei04-27-08, 09:57 PM | Yeah, psionics scares me, too. Maybe The Academy is experimenting with sorcery (as opposed to wizardry under 3.5) or maybe the world only knows clerical magic, and River-types are magic-users? Kinda hard to tell your players they can't be wizards unless they have a really dark backstory though. If magic of D&D is = to the science of Firely, maybe psionics is the only way to go. The Alliance could still be neutral, with evil-aligned people running The Academy. The Operative did say "This is not an evil empire..." If you have a party with 5 or 6 PC's, but 1 of them is evil, that does not make it an evil party. Think of the Order of the Stick. Take DragonFly and run with it, (PLEASE!) but I don't grok Spelljammer, so my DragonFly is gonna be planet-bound. I bet the rim speech and chinese would work fine in D&D too, or maybe dig out/google a Planescape dictionary, if you got the jink, berk. Nobody I've every played D&D with (unfortunately) ever stayed in Elizabethan speech with a proper accent anyway! Keep sailin'! |

In many ways he's the polar opposite of Zoe, and he's always trying to 'stick it to the man' and I fail to recall a single time where he was bothered about which side of the law he was on.This is just because "the man" is the Alliance, against whom he fought a war attempting to stop them from exerting authority where they have no right to do so. He lost. He now has to live in the world as they dictate it - but he lives on its fringes so that he has to put up with the minimum amount of their crap and can even get away with ignoring them or defying them occasionally. It's not that he doesn't care about law and order - it's that he doesn't like the way the Alliance sets up and enforces that law and order. |
| VardenErinKenzei04-29-08, 08:13 AM | Should the ships be sailing ships only, or should they be flying ships? |
