So basically i'd like to know in the places you go to play D&D with your friends or others, how big are these get togethers? Large ammounts of players? Small close knit community type deal? This goes for if your playing with your friends at home or at a comic and game store. Which of these do you prefer too, large scale games, or smaller ones? :)

Throughtout high school (early 80s) my best friend and I were in a "just the two of us" campaign. We took turns as DM. Both of us were also in an 8-player group (7 PCs plus 1 DM).

Throughout college groups ranged from 4 to 9 in size. I also played a lot of Shadowrun and Marvel Super Heroes RPG during those years.

I did not play D&D from 1994 to 2000.

My most recent completed campaign had as many as 8 players at a time, but the majority of the campaign was only 5.

My current campaign is online, and I am one of 3 players, plus a DM.

Interesting. My campaign im creating now is most likely going to only hold 2 other people. (My 2 friends. I'm showing them the game) I will probably run through the basic game setup with them first though.

But luckily there's a close comic and game shop where i live that has D&D get togethers in thier game room, so im going to have to check it out soon. I go frequently for magic tournaments and such but never for D&D, should be interesting :D

I try to go with about five or six players in my campaigns, though DM's I've had have had massive numbers.

During high school and the next few years after, my D&D group consisted of me, a couple friends, and 1 or 2 associates would pop in every now and again. For several years (around '99-'05) my group consisted of me and 3 others, usually the same three, but work schedules and uncontrollable circumstances often mixed things up, and occasionally the group ballooned out to me and 6 players and shrank down to me and 2 players.

Overall, they have been good times. There was a spell when I had some nasty DM burnout but kept slogging on anyway, and it helped rip the fun out of the game for me for many months. Still, D&D has been some of the best times I've had with my friends.

Right now I'm just DM'ing for my family - wife, two daughters, and a son. With my DMPC, that makes five.

Historically, though, I played with a group of friends from High School up until last year (23 years!) when one too many moved away. At one point, with spouses, it added up to nine total. We rotated DM'ing, but that large a group really made combat a hassle.

Five or six is much more comfortable, I think.

Excluding the DM, 3-5 players has always been the optimum number of players for me (As a player and a DM).

The largest group I have DM'd was 8-10 people regularly, but no matter how quick you were at running combat it was always a bit slow. Now I tend to stick to groups of 3-5.
