My friend from highschool played with some people from college, decided to run a game with his highschool buddies. Then he & I moved to pittsburgh, and picked up a couple players there, since then moved back, and still have 1 guy drive up from pittsburgh every week to play. (2 hour drive). Now I run a game too, with the same people. We were actually the first 3.0 game in the area (from what I understand).

It all started quite quickly for me. I have Icewind Dale to thank for my love of the game I think. It was that game that got me into the whole fantasy world RPG kind of thing. My first DM also had the games, and it sparked him into buying the 3.0 core books. Totally out of the blue, he said "I've ordered the actual D&D game, what do you want to play as?" That led to my first gaming group, which was just a small group of my friends.
So I didnt really discover the group, it was thrust upon me :)

Part of the group I discovered at school - they had an adventurers guild. When half of that group moved away, we managed to recruit a female gamer from work, and her boyfriend.

A guy in my French class learned that I played one of the competitor's "computer-hooligans" roleplaying games, and invited me to his house for D&D.

They had a lot of fun hazing the new guy that night.

I am the Creator, the Instigator, and the Get Togetherator!

I've been running and putting together groups for fifteen years, mostly unsuccessfully.

I think my greatest success is my current group, although we're yet to play. I've learned a lot and matured a lot as a DM and have become very good at organizing and running games. I hand-picked each player this time round instead of just hapharzardly getting anyone who answers a general call together, which never seems to work.

One guy is from a group I joined about 11 years ago. We've been friends ever since. Another is a guy I met through a net attempt to get people together. A group formed from that attempt, however I found it lacking and left. He's now finding it lacking as well, and since we've become friends in the interim, he's joining my group as a player (he was DM/player in the other group).

The other two are people I've known to a limited degree online for several years. One of them I had tangled with on a certain messageboard which is a land full of the kin of nuts. He used to run the board. Now he's in Australia with his Aussie wife and is settling down and we decided, what the hell, let's meet up. We both found each other to be surprisingly reasonable and interesting people, despite our online personas! :)

The other person was interested in Greyhawk and we were going to get together for a game ages ago, but conflicting schedules wouldn't allow it. But recently he said he could spare some time and that was the catalyst for bringing everyone else together, since I realized I had four players!

So far, it's going great. I've got four mature players who have all made an effort to put some thought into their characters and have read up on a bit of the Greyhawk history and incorporated their character histories with Greyhawk history. I have LOADS of character driven plots, several 'meta' plots (as in, plots that run throughout other plots and bring those plots together as a whole... eventually) and lots of cool stuff for the characters to accomplish. By the time they've gained 2nd-level, they will have hopefully accomplished so much that they'll be hooked and eager to roleplay through to 20th-level.
