| smashbear11-29-05, 09:20 AM | Does anyone know if the movie D&D II: Wrath of the Dragon God has been released yet on DVD? I saw an add in the latest Dragon magazine stating that it's coming out this Novembre, but Amazon.com says that it's coming out only in 2006. And did anyone see it when it premiered on the Sci-Fi channel? Is it any good? |
| UndeadMouse11-29-05, 01:55 PM | I liked the first one better. D&D movie: 6/10 D&D II movie: 4/10 |
| Eerongal11-29-05, 02:22 PM | i personally liked the new one better than the first one, it just seemed more D&D like rather than a generic medieval setting. Be warned though, the production value is obviously cheap, so the special effects are kind of sub-par. |
| Aladdar11-29-05, 02:51 PM | you're the first person I've heard from who liked the first one better. It was ok, nothing great, but years better than the first movie. I still think it could have been done much better, but it's a relatively close adaption of what dnd is. They have the spells, speak about old modules, have classes which are easily distinguishable, etc... Some things were wrong, but more were right than wrong. |
| Stardrake11-29-05, 11:26 PM | The DVD was originally coming out in November, but Sci-Fi exercised an option to keep the film exclusive for an extra 3 months (apparently getting good ratings, then) and so, we wait. (The DRAGON ad was probably already printed when the decision was made--only so much you can do with print.) A few people apparently managed to get a copy before they were pulled. (My info came from my FLGS, who heard it from their distributor.) Haven't seen it myself, yet--no cable or satellite. |
| Dumat11-30-05, 09:22 AM | After seeing the wreck they made of the first one (and that took some doing, when you have Jeremy Irons as the villian and Thora Birch as...the lady that gets...grappled...by Jeremy Irons' incorporeal WWF champion) I will DEFINATELY wait until DnD II is in the cheap rental section of the video store before touching it. Regarding DnD I: It wasn't all bad, until the beholders. Who knew the way you defeat one of the most iconic and nasty baddies in DnD was to THROW A ROCK TO DISTRACT IT?! How many innocent PCs died before they decided to let us in on that little secret?! Plus, wow, what an ending. Did anyone see how that fit into the story at ALL? Look, if you're going to make a DnD movie, make it simple: characters (a trouble-causing rogue, an unthinking fighter, a wizard with an alterior motive, and a naive cleric) meet at a tavern, someone has clues to the location of an underground catacomb where there's treasure, they accidentally flush out a red dragon, and have to take it down before the villagers string 'em up for causing all the trouble. There. Was that so hard?!?! |
| High Octane11-30-05, 10:02 AM | The first D&D movie was a disaster wrapped in layers of suck. The second movie was an okay movie, IF you take into consideration that it was a Sci Fi movie of the week. That of course means lower expectations due to limited budget and resources. The second time around, the director did a good job. Nothing worth any big praise though, the movie still had its bad parts. I would pay 10 bucks to buy the DVD, not much more than that. |
| Sci-D11-30-05, 11:08 AM | I liked the second movie a lot and wondered why it only aired once on Sci-Fi. It is for sale legitimately now although that could be as a pre-order for another couple of weeks since I know mine wont ship until around Christmas. |
| Murrdox11-30-05, 01:25 PM | The 2nd D&D movie, while VERY OBVIOUSLY was nothing more than a "sci-fi movie of the week"... was decidedly better than the first movie. I just can't begin to describe the levels of crap that were in that movie. I can't even think of one thing that was even GOOD about the entire movie. Even Jeremy Irons acting was horrible. The 2nd D&D movie may be absolute and complete cheese, but at least you can watch it and say "Yes, this is a movie inspired by D&D". Hell, the mere fact that it had a Liche in it makes it more D&D than the previous one. The frist D&D movie only had Dragons and Beholders. They got Beholders completely wrong, and they completely screwed up Dragons as well. About the only thing they got right about Dragons were that Red and Gold Dragons hate each other. Other than that they were just big flying lizards that breath fire. |
| Otherguy11-30-05, 01:49 PM | DnD doesn't lend itself well to a movie, really. Just like some books make bad movies, some movies make bad tv shows, and that you should never try to make a rpg based on a single-player video game. |
| Sci-D11-30-05, 02:32 PM | I would have agreed that D&D would be a difficult movie to make if it wasn't for Peter Jackson & Wetta. It takes more talent and $ than I have, but someone has to be out there that can get it done right. I believe Warner Brothers cut the budget for D&D II and it unfortunately went the way of the after school special. Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun to watch, look back at adventures from the 80's they referred to, see monsters that we coincidentally fought during the game the night before, & play guess the magic item based on what the characters had on them. Hopefully D&D II will open the door to future movies or that Dragonlance TV series that keeps getting cancelled. |
