Yade 10-16-04, 01:35 AM	After a long day of hard rolling and rules lawyering we went to Denny's to make fun of the late night LARPers. After awhile we got to talking about the game and decided that we were going to assasinate the leader of the thieves guild. The devious plan involved some espionage and, of course, framing someone else. We were knee deep in going over our plan of attack, we had a map drawn out of his place and were going over how we were going to execute the plan. Then I felt a presence; it was officer Steve of the Mesa Police Department staring ominously over my shoulder. Amidst a restaurant of LARPers, all of whom were doing the whole paper-rock-scissors "I bite your head" thing. Officer Steve noticed us and got nosey, believe it or not he escorted us outside to talk. He was seriously thinking of arresting us for conspiracy to commit murder. The only problem is he could not figure out who we were going to kill. Our contention that it was just a game seemd a bit coy to him. "Where are your dice?" My friend Kevin yanks a Crown Royal bag from his coat and starts to open it when Officer Steve says. "Well isn't that convenient" To make a long story short we had to get out the PHB and DMG and show him that we knew how to play the game before he would leave us alone. I am sure that this was the first time that someone had to use one of these books to avoid getting arrested. Crazy

I ended up slitting her throat, and then stabbing her whole family to death." And you know that occurs right when you walk by the most emotionally vulnerable old lady.
WizO_Catoblepas 10-16-04, 02:01 AM	I actually went to Arizona State University (still 5-0 when I wrote this post) and got my bachelors in mechanical engineering there. Phoenix is a pretty conservative place in general, so your story doesn't surprise me too much. Also, with police being told to have a heightened sense of awareness, I guess I can understand some of the questions. Next time, the best advice is to not have a discussion concerning assassinations in a public place like a restaurant, even in the name of fantasy. Think of it this way: let's say the next time he overhears an assassination attempt, he dismisses it as a gaming experience (due to your situation), and later on that night someone is killed by those fellows, then (a) a death occurs that could have been prevented and (b) every one and their uncle are going to be coming down on that police officer for not doing anything in advance.
Yade 10-16-04, 02:10 AM	We were very cordial to officer Steve, it was more of the shock that he chose us in lieu of all of the freaks there that night and the fact that he had no idea about D&D. I am getting my DMA in Music at ASU right now and am teaching some undergraduate classes. Good to see ASU people out there.
WizO_Catoblepas 10-16-04, 02:41 AM	Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm sure that your were more than polite to the officer especially with the situation in which you found yourself. I find myself sometimes listening to myself to make sure that I don't say something in D&D terms that a 3rd party would interpret wrongly whenever I talk about D&D in a public place. It's just that I'm sure that officers have been trained to keep their ears open for talk of killing and bombs. It's pretty sad, but unfortunately a derivative of present day life. It reminds me of when I I was single, I the ASU mascot symbols on all of my checks and I would leave a donation at church ... :D Good luck in your studies graduate studies. I'm in the process of getting my MSE in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue and feel ASU gave me a good background. At any rate, say "hi" to the 10,000 roaches in Manzanita Hall for me. :D It's alway great to hear from another Sun Devil.

The food's actually pretty good, and it is often the only decent eaterie in town open at 4am, hence the abundance of LARPer's that can be found there after a session. On the other topic, my brother is absolutely horrible about speaking out of context around non-gamers. Like last week, he was reading about the Sims 2 on GameSpot, and he just kind of off-handly says aloud, "Hmm, I wonder how hard it is to kill babies." After several seconds of stunned silence from our mother, he blurts out "IN THE SIMS!!! I MEAN IN THE SIMS!!!" If only that were an isolated incident...

Although as to why he chose you instead of the LARPers, I'd imagine that, with the Denny's sounding like a late-night LARPer hang-out, he may have already heard their story. Maybe you were suspicious because you were talking about a game and weren't crazy or obvious LARPers. Course, if someone did turn to actual assassination, the report of the murderer might be interesting. "Be on the look out for a killer. This suspicious person is about 5'5" tall, aging and overweight. He is armed with thick rulebooks and a Crown Royal bag, possibly containing dice. I repeat, possibly containing dice."
CzarGarrett 10-16-04, 06:44 PM	I've never had to explain myself to the Cops, however, both D&D conversations and other conversations (dreams, stories, movies, etc) have had to been explained to those in authority. Like when I was talking to some friends in college about how I was suspected for possible Columbine-like scenario in my high school. A teacher overheard me ranting about it and 2 days late, I have the Dean of Students having a meeting with me to make sure I'm not planning it. And its always fun to talk about stuff like that when other people your own age are around, and have no clue about beholders and psionics and stuff.

The_one_wit_a_reason 10-17-04, 02:16 PM	first of all my story that got me a broken nose, 5 stiches, and a very sorry cop ok iwas walking to the seven eleven across from the local game sore with my dnd buddies as we walk in one of my freinds says "okay first off all we sneak in and slash the guards throats then find the sonhofa***** and kill him" the person working there calls the cops and yells we are not to leave the store so 5 minutes later the cops show up and we get dragged out side and hand cuffed to a bench and after a frustrating conversation explaining it was dnd he didnt understand ia reached into thy pocket on the inside of my coat (mistake) i was reaching for my dice/charecter sheets anyway i get a night stick to the face i then remove my sheets and dice and explain dnd to him he un cuffs us i walk to the hospital 3 blocks away with the officer and he covers the expensis i keep my dice in a small wooden box

Most won't do that, they'll just tell you it was your fault for reaching in your jacket. However, if someone told me I wasn't to leave the store, they better be ready to physically stop me, because I wouldn't stick around.

I've never seen a LARP'er at IHOP. I do see cops there pretty frequently. Maybe my little town is ahead of it's time then? :smirk:

Also, a guy I game with now is FBI, but not ex-millitary.

Utah has few good gaming stores, although I'm not sure where in the Salt Lake valley. Years ago, I used to pop into Hammond's Toys in the basement of Crossroad's Plaza (mall downtown, on Temple Square).

I haven't been in a Denny's in almost ten years -- last time I was there it was 2am and the Prince of the City'd just been assassinated (read, leaving for college the next day). Ever see a hundred goths cram into a Denny's with a max occupancy of 85, about a third of which was already taken up by truckers? Of course, the staff dreaded those nights, except the owner, he was like a junkie anticipating the fix...got the giddy little shakes, the $$$ in his eyes, etc.

After a time, we started reminiscing about the “memorable disasters” of our beloved gaming sessions of yore. Suddenly, in his infinite drunken wisdom, my friend blurts out something along the lines of “well, that’s what we got for being necromancers!!!” That’s when the girls on the stools next to us choked on their daiquiris and moved away. It was clear from their looks of morbid awe they thought the term “necromancer” was a synonym for another, similar word. Sadly, this was NOT my “most embarrassing public D&D moment.”

Yes sir, I was an MP in the Army for 6 years and learned to play D&D there. :D (Love the pic of Antonio from Shrek 2. I was on the floor the first time he did that in the movie) I'm a lowly 911 dispatcher now and send out said officers to the calls at Denny's. :D I bring my bag of D&D books too work to read between calls and the other dispatchers and officers think it's some devil game. I'm in Florida so a lot of people here are way to country for my New England mind. :D Who said they have there dice in some green felt bag. Poor soul. :P I have two Crown Royal bags. One average size and the small shot size where I keep my small D6's block for all those dang spells. ;)

Fortunately, I know a place where I can get a decent although small one cheap. Back on topic, I don't think this ever happened to my group, mostly because we didn't go and eat together (we all had places to be after the game), but this does remind me about this one incident I heard about on the news where someone on the phone with some mistook the person he was talking to yelling out to someone in the house about a mission of Grand Theft Auto and thought it was a bomb threat. Great stuff, pretty funny (although I bet it wasn't so funny at the time).

Everybody run! count arioch is a vampire!! (/panic) well, we had a d20 moderrn campaign going, and we went to buy some beer at a liquor store near the house we where playing in. I was dming so i asked "what are you gonna do to find that kind of cash?" (once of the players wanted to buy an 18-wheeler) and then, the other player, a guy that i am sure has wisdom 3 said: "rob a liquor store". The guy behind the counter reached for a bat and took a swing at us! we spend 20 minutes explaining him what we where talking about, so he gave us free beer as an apology ^^ I keep my dice in an old dragondice bag ^^ Oh, and here, its arepas and beer. Don't know what's an arepa? google it! :D

Ulfr 09-29-05, 12:03 AM	I'm in Florida so a lot of people here are way to country for my New England mind. Melbourne here. IMHO, Florida is way to south to be south. We just wish we were south...though we have a mega-flux of surfers on the east coast so that may balance out our wanna-be redneck buts... Our big play spot is barnes and nobles, and when they close we go to steak and shake. Luckily we have a steak and shake which is very hospitable to our odd dorky nature. Alot of the workers are emo-gothy kids, so when they see the gamers walk in with books they give us a table, ask what we want, bring it and then never come back for hours. When a restraunt is trained to ignore you for 4 hours on end, you know they know what gamers are.. Our Dennys on the other hand is not-that-great a place. It's right dab next to the county line; for those of you that live somewhere in central florida you may have heard of it. If you haven't, it's the red neck place to be on a weekend. Think of a redneck bar mixed with a club. Though, the denny's and it's next door neighboor waffle house are hilarious to go to on friday nights, you couldn't play a game there if you wanted to. We use barnes and nobles and steak and shake alot-with FIT in town dorks are very known to frequent those places.
OctoberRaven 09-29-05, 06:26 PM	Steak & Shake rules. We got one over nearby Sawgrass Mills Mall in Ft. Lauderdale, where I hang out sometimes. Haven't found many gamers around yet, as I just moved in a couple months ago, but it's still cool to go to Hot Topic and check out the gamer shirts. I got one a week ago that reads "Shirt of Invisibility +2" and saw one in green with all the D&D dice and the words "Choose your weapon" underneath. If it weren't for the fact that they don't play much metal, I'd never leave that store.
Templetroll 09-29-05, 06:45 PM	We used to game at a Denny's in Poughkeepsie, NY. We had the table in the back and it was only due to there being about 14+ to buy food that they were willing to let us do so. We would have two or more games running at a time. It was a blast.

I've got a crown royal bag (two actually) but I use it for holding pencils and other stick-shaped art supplies, and my other I use to clean my moniter. For my dice I use a bag that came full of opals. Real opals. You get the coolest stuff when you're a jeweler. Most of my dice are in one of the round Altoids tins, and then that's in the black jewel bag along with my mini (Rock on, Paladin!) in a dice box. But anyway, my story. We were planning to take out a temple devoted to a Mindflayer diety. Not a position we really enjoyed being in, but they knew about us and it was a matter of who was going to act first. So the DM gets the munchies and we decide to all head over the the wing place, each with a d20 and mostly that's it. So as we're walking in the door the other clientele really only hear me saying, "...so then when the church's doors are all locked shut, you three torch the place while he and I wait outside and shoot anyone who gets out." That got me some strange stares I can tell you.
Lord Psynister 09-30-05, 01:09 AM	I too keep my dice in a crown royal bag. As soon as I had enough dice to justify having one, I went and searched until I found one. In the 13 years that I've been playing, I've only had to replace it (with another CR bag) once. As far as the Denny's thing goes, I've had similar situations several times. After the third time, or so, we started just saving ourselves a bit of hassle and started having our sessions at Denny's, and letting people watch/listen in on the games so that they'd get the idea and stop thinking we were crazed murderers or something. If anyone else decides to do the same, I would definitely suggest that you keep the little kids at least 5 feet away from the table though...unless you don't mind wondering where your favorite d20 went off to....
Airsucker 09-30-05, 02:11 PM	I haven't been in a Denny's in years and there are very few IHOPs up here. I remember Denny's being ok for food, but horrible for service. I'll see if I can get Waywardson5 over here to tell his Denny's story. I have been thinking that if I can ever get a game going and I'm still in this tiny apartment, that I might see if I can convince a local bar to let us take over a table or two on an off night.

I have noticed in my time in the military that there are far higher percentage of people who play RPG's and D&d in them than any other element of society. There is also a higher percentage of people who have an interest in playing, as well. Which is humerous if you contemplate the Geek/Scoungy/Unhygenic/Socially mal-adjusted D&D player stereotype compared to the stereotypes of military personel...

Ut-Napishtim 09-30-05, 07:44 PM	You know, I've never actually done the whole Crown Royal dice bag thing. I'm pretty happy with the ones I have though. As far as Denny's goes, we don't have one here, and IHOP used to be on the 'off limits' list on post because so many joes got shot or stabbed there. Although that was the old one that was on Bragg Blvd. IIRC. They have a new one (since I was last here anyway) on Skibo that I've eaten at and is okay, but I've never seen any RPers hanging out there. There's a gaming store down the road from my house, but most of the time it's just full of kids playing Yu-Gi-Oh. I'd imagine Barnes and Nobles is the same way since the last time I went buy there they had a sign advertising their Yu-Gi-Oh tourneys and play nights on the front door.
