09-05-04, 06:56 PM Redoing my SAT's... obviously taking a prep class... and one of the questions about chances goes:

"In a Dungeons and Dragons game, one must decide wether a generic hobgoblin is killed (trust me, it sounds even worse in Hebrew).

To do so, one must:

A) Roll a 20-sided die, and if it rolls 14 or more, the roll is considered "a hit landed on the hobgoblin".

B) Roll an 8-sided die, and if it rolls a 7 or more, the hit is considerd a critical, and the hobgoblin is deceased.

What is the chance of slaying the hobgolin with the very first blow?"

I chuckled for a few minutes when I saw it.

And does the average Hebrew speaker know what it is?

Seeker - the word they used is "Hobgoblin". Or הובגובלין if you prefer. I'm really wouldn't know wether an average Hebrew speaker would know it...

BTW - it's in קידום - פסיכומטרי 2005 . Big book, page 236, question 29.

Odds of hitting = 7 out of 20 = 35%
Odds of killing = 2 out of 8 = 25%
Odds of killing on first hit = .0875 (~9%)
Also, what's the chance of getting two pairs of identical rolls it you roll a pair of dice three times?The odds of getting an identical pair on a roll of two (assuming six-sided) dice is 1 in 6. Doing it once more in either of two more attempts is also 1 in 6 on each attempt. That you get three tries to match two pair gives you a 2 in 6 chance of getting a second pair.
Total chance = 1 in 18 or 5.5% (I think I am right on the second question).

7/20 (to hit) * 2/8 (to crit) is the same as 7/20 * 1/4

Or, 7/80 odds. The math works out to the same percentage as you got, though.

09-05-04, 11:59 PM I like word problems and all, but I'd be slightly confused by it if I didn't play D&D.

I've had several people get confused when they seen my D&D dice, so maybe using 20 sided dice, and 6 sided dice is a bad thing in SAT tests.
