| Mock2604-10-08, 04:55 AM | At my last session my friends and I were talking about everyone's dump stat for their characters and, for the most part, it was Charisma. This led to the discussion of Charisma being, for the most part, the traditional dump stat for millions of players. But, have any of you ever stopped to think what exactly this means? What it means is that there are millions of butt-ugly adventurers out there, roaming the lands of an untold number of worlds, beating up monsters and stealing their money. Think about it, the aventurers in most fantasy worlds are NOT beautiful people (like all those lying, misleading fantasy artists would have you believe). They are the ugliest people in all the world. They are so ugly that they are outcasts from their own societies and they have to gather in ugly bands with their fellow ugly freaks in order to survive. Not only are they outcasts from their own people, but they are so horribly ugly that monsters attack them on sight! Come on, think about, when a troll or an orc or a medusa attacks you because you're ugly, then you must be REALLY ugly. It's a sad, sad, sad game that we play, one where we create fantasy characters for us to live vicariously through, and more often than not we enter this fantasy world as someone who has a face that not even a mother could love. D&D. It is an ugly game. :D |
| Numetal35704-10-08, 09:04 AM | But just think about all the beautiful sorcerors out there. |
| Count Arioch the 28th04-10-08, 09:36 AM | Charisma isn't beauty, it's force or personality. Ghouls and Mind Flayers have high charisma. |
| Bloodsoul04-10-08, 09:42 AM | Charisma can reflect appearance to some degree, but I figure even if your dump stat is 10+... you ain't ugly. Hell, I've got a necromancer who's Charisma is 8, and I wouldn't consider him ugly, just introverted. |
| Count Arioch the 28th04-10-08, 09:50 AM | I've played ugly characters with high charisma, I roleplayed them as imposing and dangerous-looking. |
| Crazygx3404-10-08, 09:57 AM | Real funny!:) And just think of the agression they could make too. They get rejected by women or man, even animal. They could get very mad with a need of affection.... Watch your back dude... |
| Zombie_Babies04-10-08, 10:03 AM | Though Charisma is not a true reflection of appearance, the rest of the post does make sense. Low scores would indicate a chance of being social misfits and outcasts. The question, then, is if the vast majority of characters have Charisma as a dump stat, how in the nine do they manage to get together and form a party? ;) |
| Orchomenos04-10-08, 11:01 AM | Charisma isn't beauty, it's force or personality. Ghouls and Mind Flayers have high charisma. For individual characters, I agree with you. But now, we're talking about a society phenomenon and stereotypes. You can have handsome adventurers with low charisma, but no one will remember him because of his low charisma. You can have ugly adventurers with high charisma, but overall they will let good impressions and won't be remembered for their ugliness. Funny remark, Mock! :P |
| key04-10-08, 11:41 AM | Charisma measures a character’s force of personality, persuasiveness, personal magnetism, ability to lead, and physical attractiveness. My rogue's CHA of 4 is due to the first four factors. It would of course be an 18 if CHA was based solely on the last factor. ;) |
| mycroftb04-10-08, 12:58 PM | Well, it's obvious what Mialee's dump stat was. Confirmed (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/cc/20000626b), it's charisma all right. |
| Sunic_Flames04-10-08, 02:25 PM | That, and an 8 is 'slightly impaired', not 'epic fail'. Just like 8 Int means a little slow, not incapable of feeding self, 8 str means... average person in the modern world... |
| Prime3204-10-08, 02:43 PM | When the question "What is the best D&D videogame?" was asked, one answer was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I guess it's true. http://bp0.blogger.com/_qSS_0WuH3OY/RkkDmppn2qI/AAAAAAAAABk/igOQG5QrhLY/s1600-h/f%21ugly.jpg Link (http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?publicUserId=5380122&bId=6798290) |
| Operation_Shoestring04-10-08, 02:57 PM | I refuse to play a character with low INT and CHA. I'm okay with dumping WIS (I have ADHD and so do many of my characters), but I can't roleplay someone stupid, and I refuse to roleplay someone who's got no moxie. |
| pigknight04-10-08, 03:57 PM | All the PCs in my campain can't dump CHA, human knight, human paladin, dwarf cleric and elf sorcerer, and the knight dumped INT, and it's 15. |
| Zherog04-10-08, 05:15 PM | That cleric could probably dump Charisma, actually. I doubt he cares too much about turn undead (and it'll become almost useless at higher levels anyway). |
| Sunic_Flames04-10-08, 05:19 PM | That cleric could probably dump Charisma, actually. I doubt he cares too much about turn undead (and it'll become almost useless at higher levels anyway). Turn attempts fuel divine feats, which are still useful. With that said I don't dump the mental stats unless forced to. As I have high mental stats, playing low mental stats is like attempting to eat pizza through a straw - technically possible, but completely unsatisfying. And generally I can pad them to an acceptable level, as I only accept 32 PB games. |
| Renown004-10-08, 05:58 PM | So does this make my 18-Charisma-ed Druid good looking? If so, I'd say he's pretty FREAKING hot. |
| High Octane04-10-08, 09:31 PM | Charisma isn't beauty, it's force or personality. Ghouls and Mind Flayers have high charisma. So do Beholders. |
| beepaladin04-10-08, 09:55 PM | So do Beholders. Beholders are hot. I find dex to be a better dump stat often, but I play mostly meat tanks in armor. |
| Wharin04-10-08, 10:43 PM | Well they say that Beauty is in the eyes of the Beholder... and Beholders have one huge eye and a dozen other ones.... that is is indeed alot of beauty in them there critters. |
| Drackthor04-11-08, 01:02 AM | Charisma isn't beauty, it's force or personality. Ghouls and Mind Flayers have high charisma. Tentacles and the inability to get tired, what woman would find that attractive? :P |
| DKase04-11-08, 01:28 AM | Though Charisma is not a true reflection of appearance, the rest of the post does make sense. Low scores would indicate a chance of being social misfits and outcasts. The question, then, is if the vast majority of characters have Charisma as a dump stat, how in the nine do they manage to get together and form a party? ;) As anyone can see just by looking at a highschool cafeteria, even the 'social outcasts' can find people they can relate to and band together. And of course all adventurers are inherently mal-adjusted by societal standards. I mean a normal person usually doesn't consider "kill everyone in sight," or "burn everything" as a probable conclusion to get out of a situation as mundane as "who's covering the bar tab?" I've always viewed charisma as one's ability to press their will onto others. Historically, there's been a lot of butt ugly people that were able to sway the hearts of millions (Ghandi wasn't exactly a looker, neither was Abe Lincoln). |
| High Octane04-11-08, 03:40 PM | Beholders are hot. You a kink. |
| Renown004-11-08, 06:05 PM | Tentacles and the inability to get tired, what woman would find that attractive? :P Ow-OW. :cookie: for you. :P |
| RedWizard04-11-08, 08:28 PM | OK, so we have established that the lands of fantasy do not so much abound with cross-eyed buck toothed heroes so much as they abound with socially inept and forgettable introverts. Whoo!:bored: |
| kelvinaw27304-12-08, 06:51 AM | Charisma is social grace, force of personality. 8 Charisma is ... well introverted, a bit geeky, or else loud and a bit boorish. They don't always act appropriately, have poor dress-sense or some-such. Physically, they can be hawt, but don't make the most of it ... High charisma can be dragged through a hedge backwards, dressed in sacking, battered to hell ... and still make it work! In their ancient Monestary, in a small and select valley, the Monks of Cool takle their aspirants to a room filled with all maner of clothing, and ask them: "Yo, my son, which of these outfits is the coolest to wear?" To which the answer must be: "Hey, my man, whatever I select." |
| VulcanStormwrath04-12-08, 10:01 AM | If most of civilized society considers you to be homicidal douchebags, and other than when there's a rampaging Dragon or Orc tribe, would rather you not stick around. You have a low Charisma. Sounds like a lot of adventurers. |
| animunculi04-12-08, 10:50 AM | 19, +4 - that means I score! The quote two posts up is from T.Pratchett "Thief of Time", if I'm not mistaken :D. |
| The_Shaman04-12-08, 10:53 AM | Adventurers... Or another dragon :D |
| Kiioro04-12-08, 12:38 PM | Unless you're gaming with my group, since we care a lot about our looks in real life, in D&D we're a bunch of people who refuse to be treated with velleity or indifference (both male and female players alike). So, with one exception, dump stats are STR (that's me, blessed be Weapon Finesse), WIS or CON. Yeah, out there, there's a bunch of beautiful ADHD'd, weak or skinny people accompanied by one standard adventurer. By the way, Beepaladin, look at my signature, it's been there since I got here. (add a Ba-bu-dum-pisssh drummer emoticon) |

| ciaran04-12-08, 01:57 PM | Sometimes a party I'm in will have mostly 12+ Cha characters. Its funny how that changes when we play non-heroic campaigns. |
| calronmoonflower04-12-08, 03:14 PM | Charisma reflects a variety of traits not just one. Looks are part of it, but force of personality and persuasiveness are part as well. |
| Sunic_Flames04-12-08, 03:45 PM | Sometimes a party I'm in will have mostly 12+ Cha characters. Its funny how that changes when we play non-heroic campaigns. The irony of that is all of my evil characters, and most evil ones in general have very high charismas (the better to convert others with via persuasiveness and such). The neutrals are a mixed bag. Actually I don't remember details, I'm just saying a mixed bag to err on the side of caution. |
| ChaosWolf198204-12-08, 09:56 PM | Charisma. It's about attitude, not looks. |
| Kala200004-13-08, 08:18 AM | It makes perfect sense because most of us probably chose CHA as a dump stat in real-life too. |
| ciaran04-13-08, 12:16 PM | The irony of that is all of my evil characters, and most evil ones in general have very high charismas (the better to convert others with via persuasiveness and such). The neutrals are a mixed bag. Actually I don't remember details, I'm just saying a mixed bag to err on the side of caution. That is so true, but the flipside of the devious badguys who can look like good guys is the murderous bunch of goons and thugs. |
| Prime3204-13-08, 12:52 PM | Heard of Hollywood Homely (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HollywoodHomely)? Most people don't have 18 Cha. |
| High Octane04-13-08, 05:26 PM | Charisma. It's about attitude, not looks. And sometimes it is inexplicable. I once made an NPC Sorcerer with high charisma and intelligence as a dump stat. Named him Zaphod. (As in Beeblebrox if you didn't get it already. Shame if you still don't.) |
| Naderion04-13-08, 05:29 PM | Charisma can reflect appearance to some degree, but I figure even if your dump stat is 10+... you ain't ugly. It's the other way round. An attractive appearance helps you to present yourself as admireable and confident. My dump-stat is almost always Intelligence. After I got Dexterity to a decent score and have a rather good wisdom score, everything else goes into Charisma. And I would boost Charisma in Real Life to the max. |
| Anansi04-13-08, 05:59 PM | And I would boost Charisma in Real Life to the max. Troo dat. In the real world, Charisma is probably the most important ability score. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/Datawolf/charisma.jpg |
| King_Of_Blood04-13-08, 11:05 PM | It makes perfect sense because most of us probably chose CHA as a dump stat in real-life too. Who said we had a choice? |
| key04-14-08, 10:30 AM | In the real world, Charisma is probably the most important ability score. Easily. Who said we had a choice? We don't, but parents do. Just grab a skin cell off Brad Pitt or Adriana Lima and clone away. Watch out for the church police. |
| Count Arioch the 28th04-14-08, 12:52 PM | I don't know what you guys are going on about, my charisma's up there. See the sig? 19, yo! |
| Sunic_Flames04-14-08, 04:36 PM | I don't know what you guys are going on about, my charisma's up there. See the sig? 19, yo! So you are. But you're lawful good, so you fail. Sorry. :( ;) |
| Prime3204-14-08, 04:40 PM | Wait, what does that have to do with anything? And don't say paladins. |
| Sunic_Flames04-15-08, 05:15 PM | Wait, what does that have to do with anything? And don't say paladins. Because good aligned individuals lose at life automatically. :D |
| Prime3204-15-08, 05:24 PM | Because good aligned individuals lose at life automatically. :DYou realise I can poison you, and say any Con damage is your own fault, right?:P |
| Sunic_Flames04-16-08, 08:09 AM | You realise I can poison you, and say any Con damage is your own fault, right?:P First, you'd have to get close enough to do so. Second, Heroes' Feast doesn't care if you actually are a hero or not, it still gives immunity to poison. Therefore, you fail. 19 cha Lawful Evil however wins. |
