D&D Language Translator [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-07-05, 08:46 PM I know that Dragon and the Draconomicon have given us a few translations of the fantasy languages, but is there any actual program that makes the languages real, like a translator?

Although it would be great, but it would take ages to finish it.

07-08-05, 01:10 PM There's one out there for Tolkien Elvish, since he actually did invent an entire language for it (languages were a hobby of his).

You gotta realize, any kind of translator requires that the language actually exists. Not many people are going to spend the years it takes to create a whole new language for something as small and relatively unimportant as D&D.

Not many, but some would. I mean, we have a full Klingon language for Star Trek, after all. But we don't have Romulan, or any of the others.

07-08-05, 01:40 PM There are alot of elven language translaters around. There is also drow, a few pathetic attempts at dwarven and alot of dwarven and elven script. There are old english trasnslaters aswell. I compiled an entire elven pharse book with grey elf, which i thought was a nice one. I t was designed with dnd in mind.

I do not have the site handy, search for grey company elven language or something.

Actually, he was a linguist, it was writing that was a hobby for him :D Writing LOTR was actually his way of showing the world the elvish he created.

And about automatic translators, they can't even make accurate ones for existing languages so I doubt anone will invest the time in languages that don't really exist. Then again, as they are fantasy languages, people wouldn't care much about exact accuracy.

07-10-05, 04:54 AM Oh no, most of the automatic ones are rubbish. I reccomend you did as i did and make yourself a phrase book from a language that is listed, so that you can scroll through it.

There is a book published teaching you tolkien elven, but i am unsure if it is sindarin or quenya.
