| Teltharis03-04-05, 11:20 PM | I'm looking for something can translate certain D&D languages like Celestial and Infernal and what not. Whether its a book, website, or whatever. I'm mostly wanting to know because I'm about to start playing as a Paladin of Lathander(FR)/Anointed Knight and I was wanting to name my ancestral weapon after the celestial word for Pure Heart. Thanks in advance. |
| Ssussunriyh03-05-05, 02:41 AM | Sorry, don't know of any other than Drow and Elvish (the latter with a few different "dialects," depending on if you're a Tolkien purist, Forgotten Realms fan, Ultima Online player, etc...) |

Taking the example of libris mortis, however, (bad) Latin and Celestial are roughly equivalent, so I suggest that... eg: Cor Castum Animus Purus Pectus Integer ... mix and match, I guess. (the first ones are 'heart', the second 'pure'. Order can be reversed. Corcastum has a certain appeal) |

| Quenditar03-05-05, 04:34 PM | Agreed, Celestial and Bad Latin are mutually intelligible (if you need more inspiration, most of the spells in the Harry Potter series are written in a closely related dialect). There are sites with dictionaries of all varieties of Elvish - a Quenya dictionary at Ardalambion, Hiswelókë's Sindarin dictionary, several dictionaries of FR Elven and Drow, and Ultima Online Grelvish (which is intermediate between Tolkien's Eldarin and FR Elven in vocabulary and grammar). None of these Elvish languages are mutually intelligible, I believe. (I'm not good enough with either to test Grelvish-Frelvish comprehensibility - they look closer than Grelvish and Eldarin - but Frelvish has distorted the words further and developed new verb tenses.) The Draconomicon has a handful of Draconic words, and an odd, rough grammar. As for Infernal, take any language you don't like, preferably one your players don't speak, and run it through the WotC Wringer to squeeze out any bits of grammar or pronunciation that don't exist in English. Akkadian wouldn't do too badly, now that I think about it. |
| green_yawgmoth03-05-05, 05:03 PM | I always envisioned Infernal to sound a lot like either russian or german, maybe a mix of the two. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Psychotic Loner03-05-05, 08:40 PM | I disagree. Fiendish seems to be bad latin. As others have said, Celestial seems to be more Arabic or Hebrew. Aasimar and Eladrin do not sound at all like latin, bad or otherwise, while Lemure is a roman evil spirit. Then again, it's your universe, you do what you want with it. |
