| arykard06-22-04, 12:17 PM | http://www.darkhorizons.com/news04/040622c.php THE END TIMES ARE NIGH!!! REPENT!!! Man, I was hoping the end of the world would involve Zombies... "The hotel heiress turned megastar Paris Hilton was on radio (plugging "The Simple Life 2: Roadtrip") this morning on Kansas City talk station 710 KCMO and said she might be returning to Australia to do another film, announcing this just weeks after wrapping up a several week stint in the Dark Castle horror flick "House of Wax" currently filming in Queensland. Apparently she's in talks for a lead role in the sequel to the abysmal 2000 film "Dungeons and Dragons". While it may have bombed, the sequel is drawing an unusually large amount of high profile attention and talent who believe that in the right hands, the property could still yield a viable film franchise. Joel Silver is the producer on this and 'Wax', and the first 'Dungeons' star Justin Whalin is said to be on board too. Allegedly she impressed Silver enough to snag a role in this next one too, saying in her usual playful manner with the media - "Sounds like fun, I'll get dirty", alongside all the usual statements about what a great time the film should be to do." |

| Seeker9506-22-04, 12:55 PM | It could be worse. Nicole Ritchie could be in it too, as her fun-loving sidekick; with Ralph Machio thrown in as a teenage love interest. (does that man ever grow up? He is 42 now, and was 30 when he played a teen in My Cousin Vinny!) |

| Mantel_DeMenglamaar06-22-04, 01:53 PM | I bought the DVD for D&D the movie. Had they not cut out practically every good scene for 'pacing' reasons, it would've been a kickass movie. I personally, would rather instead of a direct sequel, have D&D 2 be a 'unrelated' sequel, with new characters, and a new story. D&D2: The Search for Snails, isn't my idea of interesting movie fair. Be nice to see some, somewhat higher level characters though. More spellcasting, and if possible a few more jibes at the 'core audience.' |

| Big Dawg06-22-04, 02:14 PM | Well if it makes you feel any better I told Paris Hilton off in Las Vegas in January. I swear to god I almost smacked that $400 cell phone out her hand. What a stuck up snotty *****! Actually I would like nothing more then to see her bomb out. Since the D&D movie most likely will be screwed up anyway, I want her in it so that she bombs with it. That no talent skank isn't even that hot. I can't believe people watch that show. It makes me want to puke in my hat. We need a :Puke: Smile EDIT: Sulaco: where did you get that puke smile? I need one of those! Thats an ace. |
| Pystian06-22-04, 02:15 PM | I don't know who Paris Hilton is, but it couldn't be that bad. The original has a reputation now for being a terrible movie. I don't think they'd try again unless they thought they could learn from their mistakes. X-Men II was definitely better than the original, and some people prefer The Godfather II. I'm not saying it'll be a good movie, I'm just saying it's a little too soon to know for sure. |
| Pystian06-22-04, 02:19 PM | I just did a Google search on Paris Hilton. My appologies. |

| General Dorsey06-22-04, 03:51 PM | There is still hope. She has yet to seal the deal. Quite often talks are just that, talks. Besides, if she does get the deal, maybe she'll be doing one of her stunts and a dragon will swallow her whole...one can only pray. Since I had no desire to see the movie in the first place, my money won't be wasted on it. My fear is that she gets the role and it helps push DnD down to the point where sales may drop too much to be worth holding on to. Perhaps we could get together and find a way to get a petition to Joel Silver or whichever film company is backing this atrocity and let them know how we feel. I don't think they are going to find out by reading these boards. |
| LordofIllusions06-22-04, 03:55 PM | Getting a petition to them will not matter. Their intent is to continue torturing DnD RPG fans with horrible big screen translations of the game. ~~~ |
| Big Dawg06-22-04, 04:14 PM | There is still hope. She has yet to seal the deal. Quite often talks are just that, talks. I hope so! On second thought, maybe Paris Hilton is a closet gamer? |
| Mantel_DeMenglamaar06-22-04, 05:29 PM | I'm somewhat reminded of that John Kovalik comic with the 'League of Extraordinary Gamers." Having Vin Diesel show up would be fairly neat. |
| Incenjucar06-22-04, 05:35 PM | Great, just what we need, someone trying to connect D&D with pornography and bimboism. They'd probably use her in a manner ala Halley Barry, and mix horrible horrible horrible lines with chain mail bikinis. |
| Incenjucar06-22-04, 05:38 PM | I just hope that the populace decides that the D&D movies are like the "Scary Movies", and learns to snicker at the absurdity rather than take it for what the hobby is about. |
| Nived06-22-04, 05:39 PM | My left arm is numb and I have a pain in my chest suddenly after reading that.... that's not good is it? |
| WizO_Catoblepas06-22-04, 06:45 PM | Well, I'm not freaking out quite yet. As long as they saved some money for visual effects and a decent writing team, I'm happy. After all, I'm thinking that they didn't turn down a disappointed Nicole Kidman to give the job to Paris Hilton. edit: If it was up to me, I'd give the role to Angelina Jolie. However, it ain't going to happen. |
| Willie the Duck06-22-04, 07:52 PM | True, but there are so many talented genre actors that could take up the roles and look comfortable in it, why would they use this 100 lb. waste of space? (she's not even an actress, she stars in a REALITY TV tv show! Can she even act?). It's not like the cast of Highlander, Buffy (minus Sarah and Allison), Angel, Firefly, Hercules or Xena, etcetcetc are doing much. Cast them! They already know how to do action/adventure. Let Billy Crystal reprise his role from Princess Bride (he wouldn't need much make-up anymore). Better yet, pair him with Robin Williams and they can be the comic relief. Bring in JarJar Binks and let him get decapitated. Do anything but drag in another flavor of the month pop-tart bimbo to this movie. |
| Korhal IV06-22-04, 07:53 PM | Originally posted by WizO_Catoblepas Well, I'm not freaking out quite yet. I'm going to save this quote to throw at you after you see the movie. Same director, same storyline, but now with a more craptastic cast. |

| Incenjucar06-22-04, 08:29 PM | Frankly, considering her 'claim to fame', I don't think getting her near spears, quarterstaves, swords, daggers, whips, dungeons, chainmail bikinis, or anything of the sort can have a good result. Last thing the hobby needs is a Paris Hilton and Elminster Gone Wild video popping up to feed the book burners' fires. |

| Ogre Mage06-22-04, 09:12 PM | I think the whole thing is hysterical. The first D&D movie was so bad I've blocked it out of my memory and can't remember a thing about it. This one looks to be shaping up to be the same. I may go just to see how bad it is. Bad movies can be an enjoyable viewing experience if you go in with the right attitude. I sure ain't expecting LOTR, that's for sure. |
| primemover00306-22-04, 09:24 PM | yes my IQ drops whenever I see her on TV... she actually put a metal pot in the microwave on that stupid show she's in... Is Uptown Manhatten on Mars? Really! |
| Angel_Azriel06-22-04, 09:55 PM | ::ponders:: Hmmmmm...if she is to star in the next DnD movie, that must mean it's a porno. That'll get it at least an NC-17 rating, which is box office poison. At the sacrifice of a decent sequel, maybe it'll show her that she has nothing close to talent and will disappear from the public eye (or, at least, Television's; she'll probably still do net porn). At least some good can come of this. ::is hopeful:: |

Same director, same storyline, but now with a more craptastic cast. Well, I'll wait until after I see the movie. If it is the same storyline as the last one, we could get Russell Crowe to star in it and still would be a clunker. As I said, I'd rather that they spend the small money on actors/actresses and the big money on special effects, settings, and a writing group to make a decent script. As for Xena, Buffy, and other shows like that, I really can't say that they exhibited top notch acting in those shows either. Thus, I don't see that much of a jump up to get those actors. As for Angelina Jolie, I still thought she was good it Tomb Raider, and really think she is a great action movie actress. It's just my preference. However, let me just emphasize the script over actress selection, which is my point. Exhibit A: Charlie's Angels 2. Good action adventure actresses (one academy award winning actress) in the cast - lousy movie. Exhibit B: Mona Lisa Smile. Good actresses (one academy award winning actress) in the cast - lousy movie. Case closed. |

| Vaalingrade Ashland06-23-04, 03:32 AM | Think of it this way: If they refrain from letting drunken monkeys do the script like they did the last one, we can always hope the good writing will make up for the fact that PAris is an ignorant skank who needs to meet the buisness end of a vorpal blade. I mean Halle Barry didn't ruin X-men and PAris isn't much worse than her. Hope springs Eternal  |
| Ranger REG06-23-04, 04:47 AM | I disagree. Halle Berry have many acting experiences and she work hard on her skill as a legitimate actress. Paris Hilton probably got the gig because of her rich daddy. Either that or she's calling Joel Silver her Sugar Daddy. A ploy which usually work with Hollywood producers. Go ask Pamela Anderson. ;) Of course, it could be worse. That reality TV show, Next Action Star, is actually a casting call for the second D&D film. AAAAGGHHH!!! :behold: |

| Ertai Planeswalker06-23-04, 06:16 AM | Well i for one am glad that Paris is taking the lead role. I mean, she gorgeous, she's popular and it might finally get that geekish image off of D&D. Besides, she's a popular name so the movie will get higher ratings and stuff because people want to see it 'Because Paris is in it'. Such a big name also shows a bigger budget than the first movie so if they make the special effects and props a little more proffesional it might just become a nice movie. |
| SnowbearK06-23-04, 06:21 AM | Or maybe it'll damage her "reputation" (snicker!) so much she'll never work in show business (barring adult film) again! Frankly, I'd rather keep the geeky image than allow vacuous bimbos to portray ANYTHING related to D&D... [edit: more specifically, THAT vacuous bimbo...I've seen 2-dimensional planes with more depth of personality] |

I disagree on all counts: Paris Hilton is not gorgeous. If anything, she has the 'easy, rich girl appeal' and that is not a plus in my eyes. She is not popular. She is well known, but mainly in the sense that people like to laugh at her. I think many people will skip on this movie 'because Paris is in it'. Or they will hope for some cheap laughs. I do not think her 'big name' shows a bigger budget. I think Paris is not that expensive, she's happy just to be asked. My conclusion; any hopes I had of this movie actually being an improvement on the first ,are fading. |

Those of us who already play won't stop playing, we'll just be ashamed to admit it (much as some of us were fearful to admit it in the 80's). It could also <gasp!> help sales by using Paris's notoriety as a means to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Sadly, if it does turn out that way, it means the boards may be clogged with a bunch of semi-intelligent yahoos that don't have the typing or grammer skills of a chimp. |

| Transit06-23-04, 11:43 AM | Actually, I think Paris Hilton would be perfect in a D&D movie. They just have to have her play the part of the obnoxious, spoiled rotten princess who sneers down her nose at the common people and tells the starving masses to "eat cake" until they finally rise up in rebellion, impale her on a large meathook and use her for dragon bait. Then show the opening credits, and get on with the rest of the movie. :D |

Seriously, let's take a look at what you said. 1) By no definition of the word is that woman "beautiful." You may have confused that with, "mildly pleasing to the eye," or "spoiled," but not beautiful. She is an ugly individual, both in physical appearence and in character. 2) She is only popular amongst two people; fat, balding, single men with broadband, and horny computer geeks who couldn't get laid in Hawaii. True, while some of these people in said groups do play D&D, it is those people that made my parents afraid of the game in the first place. 3) The only reason I would see it with that manipulative, egotistical, self-centered w**** is on the sole premise that she is offed in some horrible fashion. 4) I will have to agree with you, though, on the big budget thing. Being "Daddy's little girl," she probably has him like she keeps all the men in her life (no, not that way, pervert >_<); wrapped around her little finger. Should the film start to waver, a simple call to her father will get the picture (and any possible sequels) funded for the next 7 years. Let us hope that talks fall through, and she gets the proverbial B****slapping she deserves. |
| Jongluer06-23-04, 12:46 PM | When I first heard of the second D&D movie, I thought "My god, they might actually try to produce a film that portrays a good storyline from D&D"...then I remembered that good storylines, acting, etc. will not make as much money as say, Paris Hilton who attracts people because she is a complete idiot or according to some good looking. So, my belief is that this movie will make us all become ashamed to be associated with something that bears the same name as this, I believe someone already said, craptastic film. Well...as long as the movie isn't so bad or portrays the game so wrongly that it starts DnD book burnings, we can all just blank it from our memories, butit probably won't draw a big enough crowd to have an affect anyway...so hazzuh that no one will go see it! |

Background Commoner #543 (the one visible in the crowd for 2.3 seconds) 2. Background Commoner #241 (the one in the stocks being pelted with rotton vegetables) A Dead Body (and only dead, no connection to Negative Energy Plane) An Unusually Tall Goblin A Pile of Dragon Dung |

| Ringmereth06-23-04, 03:23 PM | Originally posted by Transit Actually, I think Paris Hilton would be perfect in a D&D movie. :D Indeed. Paris as an action heroine is the 5th horseman of the apocolypse. One of them, anyway. Angelina Jolie would actually add something to the movie, instead of subtracting a lot. |

I appreciate the first film as c-grade kitsch, but this is just insulting. |

I remember nothing of it now, save that overwhelming feeling of happiness when it was over. The experience was so bad that I doubt I will see the sequel unless it's a new LOTR. |
| Incenjucar06-23-04, 06:03 PM | Originally posted by Sulaco What does Halle Berry have to do with anything? Halle is what you call a 'bad sign'. She kicked -Callisto's- butt, for crying out loud. 3) Monster's Ball - Soft core porn movie that got passed off as a story. 4) CatWoman - The woman needs to stop accepting super hero roles. Now, while I have no idea whether Halle is a good or a bad actress, for whatever reason, all she gets put in to movies for is her name and her body, and seems to never actually get good roles or lines. It's like the producers all say "What? Halle is in this picture? Shoot. Better get a perverted 14 year old in here to rewrite the script." Paris has no greater qualifications, being a flipping netporn star, and combined with the wretchedness that is the D&D movie... *shudders* --- Who else here would rather see Bill Gates or a late night talk show host take her place, chainmail bikini and all? |

I'm thinking that established actors are going to avoid this project in order to not put their career in jeopardy. |
| Korhal_IV06-23-04, 06:39 PM | Originally posted by WizO_Catoblepas I'm thinking that established actors are going to avoid this project in order to not put their career in jeopardy. For good reason. Anyone care to see what the last cast has been doing? I'm betting it's a resume full of similar..."rousing successes". Wolffenjugen - I won't. There's too many good films I miss already. And I am threatening those in my group with excommunication if they go see it. |
| DevilKiller06-23-04, 07:04 PM | I wouldn't call myself a Paris Hilton fan, but assuming the second movie is similar to the first I fail to see how she could make it much worse. For whatever reason, Paris is a hot item right now. The D&D sequel isn't. The folks making it are probably hoping that having Paris in the film will raise some interest in it. I think they might end up being better off with another fish out of water scenario like The Simple Life. Perhaps Paris could take part in a Survivor style magical reality show where she's dropped into a fantasy world. I don't think this would be a good movie in any way, but people might watch it anyhow. |
| Jacen Solo 500706-24-04, 02:08 AM | In my opinion, the first D&D movie was *SOOOOOO* bad, that it was funny. Everytime I see it, I can't help but make fun of it. In fact, me and some friends were thinking of filming our own sequel to the D&D movie, which involves Marina(played by a Barbie doll) getting thrown off a cliff(aka my porch) in the first 5 minutes. Not only will I watch the sequel in theatres, I will also buy it, even though I already know that I will hate it. PS: Does anyone notice how much the end of D&D the movie resembles Star Wars? PPS: Does anyone notice that they never actually say the dwarf's name(it's Elwood Gutsworthy, BTW)? PPPS: If anyone here's read the book version of the movie, it was really good. For instance, they actually say the dwarf's name, Snails is a master theif that taught Riddley everything he knows, the ending is 10000000000% better, etc. |

Not exactly comic book archetype, but then the movie transcends the comic book, with the exception of the story format: mutant discrimination. When portraying a character on film, it's generally considered important to be at least -slightly- like them. Halle wasn't scripted to: -Use spell-like incantations like storm likes to do -Act like the Africa-raised rogue/warrior that she was -Get really really mad like Storm likes to do. This isn't Halle's fault (except the second -- Halle's too skinny and muscle-shy to pull off the badassness that is Storm), but nobody seems to entrust decent scripts to her to begin with. She's just there for a mildly exotic look and non-threatening demeanor, even when she's playing a slaughter-machine. The cartoons, even the "Evolution" one is much truer to Storm's true self. Rogue's played a bit off, as well, but I wager part of that has to do with the lack of Ms. Marvel powers, and is a bit more forgivable. Alas, for some reason, Hollywood is afraid, far too often, to use a martial artist female to play a martial artist female. |

She's put in movies solely for her physical appearance This is what I call a misinformed comment. Its sort of like the bad rap Leonadro DiCaprio had as only being put into movies as a Teenage Heart-throb. Yet when he was playing Arnie, people were wondering if the actor was really mentally challenged. He played a pretty good Jim Carroll in Basketball Diaries too. Halle Berry had a few good roles earlier in her career as well, check out Losing Isiah if you get the chance; its the one where she plays a crack addict who looses her kid. Sure, she does seem to be type cast as the good looking African American woman lately, but are you going to criticize her because of the roles she is being offered currently? Not to mention she's getting a hefty some of money for these roles that are indeed based partially on physical appearance; would any of us turn down 14 million because we think the director is using us for our good looks? |

Frankly, I'm a litte disappointed because many of the posts that I deleted were from guests that have been on the boards long enough to know that this type of activity is not permitted. Thus, consider this your warning - if the insulting of other posters continues, the thread is going to be closed and the offenders are going to get Official Warns. This goes for both sides and it really doesn't matter who started it. If you see something that breaks the Code of Conduct, report it and leave it at that. Also, the best advice I can give is to keep your posts to the subject matter of the thread, not each other. Finally, knock off the sexual puns and jokes - frankly they're really not that clever and don't belong on these boards. Thanks in advance. |

How is it misinformed? She has, lately, and in all the movies I've seen her in or have known her to be associated in, been used for her good looks, and has a recent tendancy to be given either bad scripts (X-Men) or to be used as a soft core porn star (Monster's Ball). Swordfish I haven't seen much of, but as I recall she was nude in it. I have never called her a bad actress or an incapable one. Just one that gets put in to roles that I find to be silly (Wussy version of Storm with a BAD line, and soft core porn star in what could have been a decent psychological story). Now she's playing what looks to be an insult to Catwoman. It's generally the same with Jim Carey and comedies. He's a -great- actor when he's not talking out of his butt. But I'd shudder if I heard he was going to be playing the role of Snails' teacher. |

She looks -much- more like Storm (And also actually looks like she could have been born in Africa -- Halle looks like the girl in La Vida Loca "skin the color of mocha". Pretty, sure, but no Storm. If her cheek bones were different, she'd pass for a tanned European girl), and if she worked out just a little more, her build would probably take muscle on much better than Halle's petite form would, which would make her all the more Stormy. That and she's got great hair for the role when she lets it grow out. And who knows, maybe she would have fought a bit more for better lines and maybe even a script that had her -act- like Storm. If you're going to do something with well-known characters, at least get someone SOMETHING like them. As such, I nominate Paris Hilton to play Snails, due to the "White Girls" movie. Bwahahahha. |

| Incenjucar06-27-04, 03:51 AM | 1) They didn't start anyone's age at the right time. While I was annoyed at this, it was a total thing. Cyc's career starts when he's a teenager, and in years and years of comics, he barely aged to begin with. 2) Yes, Hugh's too tall. So were the hobbits. It's in how they were used. While it sucks to lack the 'shorty' jokes, it's hard to tell exactly how tall he is so long as he's not standing face to face with Juggernaut. He does, at least, -look- a bit like the character. 3) I agree on Rogue. She's not stern-looking enough for the roll. Too Celtic-looking, and not enough Texan speech. 4) I agree on Xavier. A bald, shaved, and accentless Sean Connery would have been closer. 5) Yep. 6) They probably would have started Angel off as Archangel, and Beast as a hairy blue guy. I never said I agreed with how the movie was done. It's got as many problems as Jurassic Park does, easily. I enjoyed the movies highly. They're some of the few movies I consider must-have. Doesn't mean I don't think they could have done much much better. Same with the current comic series, for that matter, or the "Morph" character in the X-Men cartoon series awhile back. If I can't be annoyed that Storm is portrayed as a mousey girl who looks like she's barely got a tan and spouts silly lines about toads being like anything else when struck by lightning, may as well have made Xavier a sprinter with blue hair down to his arse. |

In the book, if I remember correctly, Aragorn is 97 years old, Frodo 51, Samwise 37, Meriadok 31, and Peregrin 20-something. Even worse when Frodo hadn't aged a bit between his 33th birthday and the start of the quest. |

Even worse when Frodo hadn't aged a bit between his 33th birthday and the start of the quest. If I recall correctly, the ring kept Frodo looking young. And as for little time passing between the party and the beginning of the quest, it's about pacing. The movies would have been 5-6 hours apeice if they kept every encounter, every scrap of dialog, etc. that is in the books. Overall, I think Peter Jackson's movie adaptions are fine peices of cinema, and do no disservice to the books. Yes, he had to leave a lot out and change a couple lines around (mostly when they were said or who said them), but he kept the movie entertaining and the plot moving. Most audiences would have been bored to tears if they had to watch a live-action version of the books, with nothing left out. However, this isn't a LotR thread, so I think that's enough derailment. (Don't wanna get the thread closed, imagine how angry the Paris bashers would be at me! ;) ) As deplorable an excuse for human existance as Paris might be, if we don't watch the movie then we'll be protesting with our wallets, and that is what means something to the movie industry. |
| Xod, Archmage06-27-04, 06:25 PM | I find it quite...ironic that the very people who keep the D&D franchise alive (we, the gamers) are the ones most repelled by the movie, its concepts, and the very thought that a clueless bimbo could be in a D&D movie as anything else than a body double. I'm appalled that the persons who okayed the original movie could think that it was anything but a bad plot with bad actors (save Irons, who has had better roles). Wow. These people are obviously more stupid than Paris. Paris Hilton will do nothing except repel a wide gaming community and attract a few fanboys who could pry themselves away from their computer and its own movies of Paris. Xod:behold: |
| Sarcor06-27-04, 07:06 PM | The problem with protesting with your wallet is only the fans and the franchise will suffer. Enough people will see it to make the film's money back, just like the first movie. The problem is the producers don't seem to think it's broken the way it is. They probably figure that the D&D crowd just isn't that big and if they want to make more money, they have to make it more mainstream. Like the other movie wasn't watered down enough. So they betray their main audience, who they figure will watch anything with the D&D name tacked to it, and hire Paris Hilton. But LOTR showed that you don't have to betray the source material to gain mainstream acceptance. Since it's basically impossible to get the attention of the people making the next D&D movie, we're going to have to suffer another horrible movie. Maybe they'll get a real director, and it'll be at least mediocre. Heck.. get Monte Cook or Keith Baker to consult or write the plot. |

You called it a bad sign if Halle Berry is in a movie. The roles she has had lately are given by the director, not by Halle Berry. Just because every other director is trying to get her to show some skin doesn't mean every director is. You yourself admit to only seeing some of her more recent films. I'm not going to discuss the topic of nude with you. By your own admission that you haven't seen everything she has been in, namely a lot of her earier stuff, then you are misinformed in claiming that her name on the billing is a bad sign as an indicator that the film will be bad. There is the chance that you could be right of course; the film could be bad. However, it wouldn't be on account of Halle Berry but rather due to the fault of some bad director putting her into a role designed to showcase her body and not her talent. |

Solid prediction: The lame-oids will continue to whine and moan about products they do not own, rules they have not tests, movies they have not seen and decisions that have not been implemented. They will cry over editions that have not been released and classes they have not played. In essence, they will be perpetual whiners and moaners. Of course, you could make a decision not to do these things, but that would be thinking clearly and fairly. |
