| Barnwellknight11-29-06, 08:52 AM | Did you enjoy the D&D movies (all three: the Dungeons and Dragons Movie, the Wrath of the Dragon God, and the Scourge of Worlds)? I did. While there were several mistakes in them, I enjoyed them nonetheless. Post your opinions, and please refrain from hurling fireballs, flower pots, trees, and kitchen sinks at me for saying that I enjoyed the movies. ;) |
| Gorteck11-29-06, 09:25 AM | *Cast lightning bolt at you* You didnt say anything about lightning bolt! Anyways i didnt see all 3 movies but i didnt realy think it was the greatest thing ... D@D the movie was kinda focused on one guy the others kinda just spook and was just ... ppl Snails all he did was steal things he did fight but the fight killed him (Well he might of been rez with that ending but ok?) and the dwarf just ran around and ate stuff ... the elf ranger was just the looker ... the whole spell caster wizard thing battle of the dragons was kinda weird in my books ... overall not as good as i would like but ok what ever it wasnt the worst movie ive seen |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph11-29-06, 09:35 AM | Worst movies I have ever seen. And I saw Species 3. |
| Seghan11-29-06, 09:37 AM | bad |
| Anung_Un_Rama11-29-06, 09:58 AM | I really didn't like them, but they could have been worse. They could have been the video cassette that came with TSR's Dragon Strike in the early 90's. I wholeheartedly blame Jim Ward for it. |
| Sulaco11-29-06, 10:13 AM | D&D The Movie: F Unmitigated garbage. Made me dread the possibility of a second one. Wrath of the Dragon God: C+ A very good B-movie. Made me look forward to the possibility of a third one. Scourge of Worlds: C An acceptable time-waster. Decent enough for what it is. Like to see more. |
| Sulaco11-29-06, 10:18 AM | Worst movies I have ever seen. I take it you haven't seen A.I. or Moulin Rouge, then. |
| primemover00311-29-06, 10:19 AM | D&D the original = teh suck! D&D: Wrath of the Dragon God - not so bad, not great either. Still set in courtney solomons drab ass homebrew world. Sourge of worlds - only saw the preview dvd so the jury's out. Movies that a D&D movie should aspire to: LOTR obviously Ladyhawke Dark Crystal Labyrinth Eragon looks promising Pathfinder Brotherhood of the Wolf (with subtitles, not dubbed) Excalibur Merlin (for a TV budget awesome!) Conan the Barbarian |
| Daiben11-29-06, 10:22 AM | the two live action films were really really bad (I haven't seen the animated one). The movies were incredibly geeky played by actors who looked like they were pulled right out of a LARP game. Of course RPGs are a dorky hobby but that is no reason for the movies to look like the left overs from a Buffy episode. The LOTR trilogy and the many recent sword&sandal films (Gladiator, Troy, 300, etc) are enough evidence that even the fantasy genre could be done well given good writers and talents. Sci-fi too has had its issues but many films like Aliens & the Matrix have shown it can be done without resorting to star trek style geeks-in-tights goodness. I wonder if maybe animation would be the better option for D&D adaptions though. I would heavily play down the game connection though and focus more of the setting and story. |
| Godzilla11-29-06, 10:32 AM | D&D The Movie: F Unmitigated garbage. Made me dread the possibility of a second one. Wrath of the Dragon God: C+ A very good B-movie. Made me look forward to the possibility of a third one. Scourge of Worlds: C An acceptable time-waster. Decent enough for what it is. Like to see more. I agree 100%. I'd like to see a third one, and see if they've improved it even more. The second one, Wrath of the Dragon God, was good, but some of it needed improvement, like the plot holes. I understand that there was a limited budget, but couldn't they answer some questions, like how did the Barbarian survive? And why were they scared of Darkmantles? And one that no one's talked about is Krull. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0085811/) It's title doesn't indicate that it's a D&D movies, but it's alternate title does, as it's Dungeons and Dragons. I haven't seen it, but I found its page on IMDb. |
| ted_the_mindflayer11-29-06, 11:20 AM | D&D Movie: :thumbsdow D&D Wraith :thumbsdow (Are they playing 2nd?) D&D Scourage: :thumbsdow Too much madning not enough madness |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph11-29-06, 03:34 PM | I take it you haven't seen A.I. or Moulin Rouge, then. Well, I have not seen Moulin Rouge, but I rather liked A.I. Ah well. To each his own. Eragon looks promising I refuse to see it on the grounds that the auther is an arogant little douche. And not a very good author. |
| jeffepp11-29-06, 04:03 PM | The first movie was quite obviously influenced by Phantom Menace, and not in a good way. They created there own Jar-Jar, and made sure that he died a horribly painful death. The final cut of the movie downplayed the special effects to the point of them being almost unnoticeable. Several computer graphics magazines highlighted the dragon fight scenes months before the movies release, showing vibrant colors and great details. In the theater, you could barely make out the fact that the dragons were dragons at all, let alone tell what color they were. I almost felt as if the directors were embarrassed by the CG. The acting was either wooden, as if the actors were reading the lines off of que cards without rehearsal, or so over the top melodramatic that it wasn't even funny. And many of the stars were A listers, so you cannot blame the talent (or lack there of). Once again I could only blame the directors, for making the actors play the parts so badly. It almost seemed as if the writer/directers were draged into making this an ensomble cast, instede of a single hero movie, which is what they did anyway. As was said above, the other characters might as well been extras for all they contributed. They would have a short bit of dialoge where they would speak of teamwork and doing "it" together, and then the main character would go off alone while the rest would stay behind (and get captured). |
| freedeath11-29-06, 04:08 PM | I'd rather watch "Showgirls". Maybe "Cocktail" instead. |
| pres_man11-29-06, 04:12 PM | First movie was horrible, I tried to watch it again, and still it was horrible. The second one was good as a made for TV movie. It would be good for a start for a TV series, but not really theater quality. Haven't seen the other one. Other fantasy movies that are good for D&D references: Conan the Destroyer (I absolutely hated this movie until I viewed it as a D&D movie instead of a sequel) 13th Warrior (low magic, Antonio as a bard, "I listened!") Conan the Barbarian (low magic) LotR (duh) Krull Willow lots of others see above for some. |
| SilvercatMoonpaw11-29-06, 04:17 PM | I only saw D&D and Wrath of the Dragon God. Both felt like badly-written fan-fiction, with linear plots and 2-D characters. I seriously think that someone was trying to translate actual sessions of D&D play (very bad ones, I might add), and they forgot to edit them for storytelling style. |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph11-29-06, 04:50 PM | ...felt like badly-written fan-fiction... Nail. Head. Wham! |
| Cael11-29-06, 05:06 PM | I refuse to see it on the grounds that the auther is an arogant little douche. And not a very good author. Now I am curious? What did he do? |
| Sulaco11-29-06, 05:10 PM | Well, I have not seen Moulin Rouge, but I rather liked A.I. Wow. You are honestly the first person I have ever encountered who liked A.I.. Well, there's a first time for everything, I suppose. |
| Sulaco11-29-06, 05:14 PM | Now I am curious? What did he do? Well he blatablty ripped off Lord of the Rings for a start. That's okay, though, so did Robert Jordan and nobody seemed to care about that either. |
| Cael11-29-06, 05:20 PM | Well he blatablty ripped off Lord of the Rings for a start. That's okay, though, so did Robert Jordan and nobody seemed to care about that either. Well, yes. He ripped off a lot of other things too, from Star Wars to Anne McCaffrey. But what made him an *arrogant* douche as opposed to a plaigarising douche? :D |
| Whisper_Swiftblade11-29-06, 05:35 PM | *pulls out glove M component* now I will cast my signature spell! *cast Bigby's big thumbs down* :thumbsdow |
| SilvercatMoonpaw11-29-06, 05:52 PM | Nail. Head. Wham! Exactly the feeling I had when I watched them. So, are you agreeing or disagreeing? |
| FeceMan11-30-06, 12:15 AM | Worst movies I have ever seen. And I saw Species 3. Sick burn. EDIT: A.I. was okay. Not great, and I hated the ending. But hardly a very bad movie. |
| CharlieRock11-30-06, 09:23 AM | You forgot one: Hawk the Slayer http://www.badmovies.org/movies/hawkslayer/hawkslayer6.jpg |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph11-30-06, 09:39 AM | Well he blatablty ripped off Lord of the Rings for a start. That's okay, though, so did Robert Jordan and nobody seemed to care about that either. And, from what my friend (who loves the books  ) has told me, Star Wars. Also, he has such a high and mighty attitude... he thinks he's Tolkien, no better way to put it. Exactly the feeling I had when I watched them. So, are you agreeing or disagreeing? Agreeing. It was like a terrible fan fic. It was bad even by fan fic standards. Sick burn. :D |
| Sulaco11-30-06, 10:28 AM | Sick burn. EDIT: A.I. was okay. Not great, and I hated the ending. But hardly a very bad movie. A.I. is the flimic equivalent of unanesthetized exploratory bowel surgey. |
| Darkwolf7111-30-06, 10:51 AM | Now I am curious? What did he do?Made more money in his teens than most do before they're 30+. (And more than some will ever.) Well he blatablty ripped off Lord of the Rings for a start. That's okay, though, so did Robert Jordan and nobody seemed to care about that either.I have not read them yet but I suppose I will. As for blatent plagerisim, ever read The Sword of Shannara? It reads like Terry Brooks took an outline of LotR and used it to write his (very good) book. As he wrote more he developed his own style and the later Shannara books are wholly his own. As for Jordan, well he's just to darned long-winded for anybody's good. To the subject at hand; The first movie sucked. The second movie was ok, but only as compared to the first. Scourge of Worlds, I think neds some clarification. If you don't know it is actually a DVD 'Choose your own Adventure' type thing. For what it is it was really fairly good. Enough to go through it a time or three. |
| Sulaco11-30-06, 10:57 AM | To the subject at hand; The first movie sucked. The second movie was ok, but only as compared to the first. See, I think this is the opposite of the truth. The Dsecond flick was a fun little low-budget sword-and-sorcery flick that is generally judged overly harshly and condemned out-of-hand cos of the association with the first one which was so God-awful terrible. |
| FeceMan11-30-06, 01:11 PM | A.I. is the flimic equivalent of unanesthetized exploratory bowel surgey. I hear you have to have that every so often after you're 50. |
| Selena Ombrenoire11-30-06, 01:33 PM | The first D&D movie is terrible, it is worst than the Star Wars Holiday Special and believe me, it's not a compliment. Wrath of the Dragon God is okay, not great but still enjoyable if you take it for what it is, a B movie. It's a movie you pop in your DVD one evening and you forget about it the next morning. If you like fantasy movies, I suggest: Lord of the ring (duh) Angel TV series (Darker and better than Buffy, it's one lesson of great storytelling...) Merlin (A really good TV movie, this is what the D&D movie should have been. One of my favorite.) Kingdom of heaven (A bit long, but a must see. One of the best paladin movie ever) Braveheart PS: The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) is a badly made SW TV movie mixed with a bad variety show. It also features the original SW cast, bad acting and a ridiculous plot written by a 3 years old kid. Since it only aired once (Lucas is ashamed of this show) the only way of seeing it is to get a bootleg copy. |
| High Octane11-30-06, 06:58 PM | Courtney Soloman is the name of the director of the first movie. He literally had zero film experience. In fact he didnt even go to film school. Every decision he made destroyed more and more what the game was about. Coincidentally, Soloman is now the name of the Deity of Torment in my homebrew campaign. Guess where I got it from? The second D&D movie was a lot like eating a really cheap hot dog. You are just so glad it didnt make you vomit, its hard to tell if it actually was good. I agree with the sentiment, it was a good B movie. Compared to every other Sci Fi movie of the week, it was pretty good. Campy at several points though. Scourge of Worlds: Great way to kill an hour. Fairly true to the mechanics of the game. Mialee looks decent for once. Dialogue is stale. |
| ludomastro11-30-06, 11:20 PM | 1st Movie: I disliked it. Mostly becuase even at USD 5.25 I felt cheated. I conned my brother into going to the movie and he was doubly upset with me. 2nd Movie: I enjoyed it. However, my expectations were very lowered for two reasons: a) I had seen the first movie and b) it was the Sci-Fi movie of the week. 3rd Movie: I haven't seen it. |
| pres_man12-01-06, 12:38 AM | 1st Movie: I disliked it. Mostly becuase even at USD 5.25 I felt cheated. I conned my brother into going to the movie and he was doubly upset with me. I know how you feel. In high school I convinced my friend to see Highlander 2, "The first movie rocked!" Even though it was at the discount theater ($1), all I could say when we exited was, "Sorry dude, I didn't know." :raincloud |
| adamb0nd12-01-06, 12:47 AM | Ugh... Seriously, we need to take Snails, Jar Jar, and Wesley Crusher, and slowly feed each one into a basic garbage disposal. |
| johnkretzer12-01-06, 12:49 AM | The first movie: Was like watching a game with a DM running a DMPC. Guess who the DMPC was. There were a few moments I liked. And I thought Marlon Wayans did a good job with what he had. But over all it was probably the greatest insult to D&D possible, It was too much for children. The Second Movie: Was like watching a group of people play D&D for the first time. It is a fun movie. I hope Sci-Fi does another one. The Third Movie: I don't know. Is it a movie? |
| Jasoncorner12-01-06, 01:10 AM | D&D 1 was awful, it wasn't even laughably bad. As for other movies, besides the obvious (LotR, Willow, etc.) I like Ladyhawke starring Matthew Broderick. Probably the best movie thief for D&D. I also liked King Arthur (2004). It was an awful King Arthur movie, but if you think of it as a bunch of PCs going around adventuring, then its pretty good. |
| Asciiman12-01-06, 04:01 AM | The second D&D movie was a lot like eating a really cheap hot dog. You are just so glad it didnt make you vomit, its hard to tell if it actually was good. Pure comic genius! Tottally sigged! |
| Araciel12-01-06, 04:58 AM | (yes i'm back) agree with sulaco as i most often do i would have expected half of the posters to say they could have done it better...imagine my surprise... |
| Kargush12-01-06, 05:09 AM | Worst movies I have ever seen. And I saw Species 3. I only saw the first, and it sucked. Worse than Dracula 3000, possibly the worst sci-fi/vampire horror movie ever. And worse than Starship Troopers 2(whatever you do, stay far away from this movie...). *shivers in horror at the memories* Seriously, I'd rather watch Alexander for 24 hours in single sitting than watch the DnD movie(s). |
| CharlieRock12-01-06, 08:28 AM | The Third Movie: I don't know. Is it a movie? It is an interactive movie for DVD. Not exactly a new concept, but not a well tread one either. Totally done with computered grapfix. Featured 'icon' characters. Pretty neat the first time around. Like an old-style pick-a-path book. |
| Rulebook12-01-06, 08:36 AM | thats what i thought it was. it was kinda interesting. i like choosing to bull-rush the baddie into the portal at the end. hehe |
| CharlieRock12-01-06, 09:20 AM | thats what i thought it was. it was kinda interesting. i like choosing to bull-rush the baddie into the portal at the end. hehe I kept thinking Lidda was a kid, especially when she got mace bashed to the skull .:D Then I remembered what she was, LoL. |
| Sulaco12-01-06, 09:30 AM | Seriously, I'd rather watch Alexander for 24 hours in single sitting than watch the DnD movie(s). If you've only seen the first one then don't comdemn the second without seeing it. Forming opinions based on ignorance is BS. |
| talkingbeatles12-01-06, 02:35 PM | Worst movies I have ever seen. And I saw Species 3. Heheh. Yeah, I agree. Although I haven't seen Species 3, I did see House of The Dead. ...Actually come to think if it, House of the Dead was probably worse then the DnD movie. But it was still pretty bad. I can only assume the other two were even worse seeing as how they didn't make it to the silver screen. |
| CharlieRock12-01-06, 02:38 PM | Heheh. Yeah, I agree. I can only assume the other two were even worse seeing as how they didn't make it to the silver screen. As far as I know of, Seven Samurai never made it to the silver screen in the U.S.A. and it is still one of the best movies ever. Not that we should compare D&D:2 to 7Samurai, but that is an awful way to judge movies. :weep: |
| talkingbeatles12-01-06, 02:39 PM | I take it you haven't seen A.I. or Moulin Rouge, then. Those aren't bad movies... And you really can't compare them to the DnD movies. They're from completely different genres. |
| talkingbeatles12-01-06, 02:43 PM | As far as I know of, Seven Samurai never made it to the silver screen in the U.S.A. and it is still one of the best movies ever. Not that we should compare D&D:2 to 7Samurai, but that is an awful way to judge movies. :weep: Yeah, I was kind of joking. Boondock Saints never came out in theaters and that was a great movie as well. Anayway, I'm not even sure if the second one didn't make it tp theaters. I just never saw anything for it, or heard anything about it. For all I know, it could have been in the theaters. I still haven't heard anything great about it though. |

If you can handle Hawk the Slayer, or Streetfighter (Sonny Chiba 1974), or any other 'good' B-Movies then you would like it. If you hated all of the Godzilla movies, or the Punisher (Dolph Lundgren 1989) then don't take the chance. It is cheesy. But, those are the kind of movies I like. |

I do enjoy myself a good cheesy movie now and again. Also, I enjoy DnD. So I think Im might check this movie out. |
| elondir12-01-06, 03:11 PM | If you ask me, the movie that is the "truest" to D&D is the 80s anime Record of the Lodoss War. I know it's a series, but I'm talking about the first set that reached American shores. You know, the one where they introduce the characters and Deedlit fights the dark elf the first time. I never even bothered with the 'real' D&D movies after hearing how bad they were. And I like really bad grade Z stuff like "Plan 9 from Outer Space" or campy Troma Studios stuff. Lord of the Rings, Labyrinth, Merlin, Conan the Barbarian are what D&D movies should try to top. |
| Asciiman12-01-06, 03:16 PM | If you've only seen the first one then don't comdemn the second without seeing it. Forming opinions based on ignorance is BS. By the same token, I don't happen to like violent sodomy from large baseball bats. Nor do I like drugs. And I've never done either, this does not make me ignorant. This makes me educated, as I've weighed everything I know about them and made an informed decision. |
| CharlieRock12-01-06, 03:36 PM | Lord of the Rings, Labyrinth, Merlin, Conan the Barbarian are what D&D movies should try to top. I don't think you can beat CoBs soundtrack. Though that shouldn't stop anyone from trying :D (it's got that Maricone-esque quality, just pure-dee good) My D&D games sometimes turn into a Marx Bros. skit: 'I think the thief should go in first' 'Hey! Who you callin' a thief? eh' 'Honka honka' *points finger at thief* 'You, too! C'mon, thatsa crazy. I'm no good thief. Send in the MP3.' 'You mean NPC?' 'No, I mean they guy that we paid to come along ,here'. 'We paid you, too.' 'Theresa tha crazy talk again.' 'Honka honk wonk honka'. 'I'm not crazy. I just don't want to go in first.' 'I'ma not crazy to go in first ,either.' |
| Greg K12-01-06, 04:14 PM | My own take: Dungeons and Dragons: The movie: F. Wrath of the Dragon God: C+ . As someone else wrote, it is a B movie and a enjoyable one at that. The third movie: There was a third movie? |
| Alakar12-01-06, 04:14 PM | First Movie- Bad....Just bad. though not as bad a House of a thousand corpses *Dodges thrown objects* Second movie- I liked it, I really did. I though that is was very entertaining, the comercials made it even more so. I think it was a big step towards what we want. Third- A good way to blow an hour or so. BTW, there is a Dragonlance Animated movie in the works, IIRC. |
| HamHam12-01-06, 04:21 PM | They could have been the video cassette that came with TSR's Dragon Strike in the early 90's. I wholeheartedly blame Jim Ward for it. Dude, what? That thing was totally awesome! AI is pretty good, and it's light years ahead of I, Robot. Moulin Rouge was also good. The D&D movies, were horrible. |
| freedeath12-01-06, 04:35 PM | Dude, what? That thing was totally awesome! Fast Times at TSR! Seriously, though, that video tape (and Dragon Strike itself) is a perfect way to spark a mass suicide; although it could have been worse; it could have been a Spellfire flick.... |
| verdynian12-01-06, 04:39 PM | Original movie: it was a big black hole of suck. Wrath of the Dragon God: Vastly improved upon the original, but it was still substandard. Kinda like watching the Sci-Fi channel on the weekends. Never saw Scourge. Furthermore, my take on some other stuff. Hawk the Slayer is bad. I mean really bad. It's so bad, it should be referenced in dictionaries as an example of bad. Don't watch it. Species 3: Well, at least it had the hot chick from xXx:State of the Union (also bad). A.I.: Nice attempt by Spielberg to imitate the late Kubrick. More of a film to watch in art school than anything else. Willow: Still the greatest fantasy film ever made! Krull, 13th Warrior, & Fellowship of the Ring: three way tie for second place. But, perhaps one of the best films is a cult fave that you're going to have to search out: The Gamers. Brilliant satire of gaming! Expect: - very low budget. - terrible acting. - to be reminded of every game you ever played. The only real down side about it is the absurdist ending (?). |
| freedeath12-01-06, 04:50 PM | Willow: Still the greatest fantasy film ever made! Krull, 13th Warrior, & Fellowship of the Ring: three way tie for second place. Ummm.... have you seek Krull...... recently? The guy's pants are reason enough to ban this film. Pure cheese.... which can be good (Sword and the Sorcerer or Kull the Conqueror, anyone?), but not in Krull (dear lord, I've typed it twice!) I'd put LOTR first, even with its glaring errors; I mean, what more do you want? Willow definitely raised the bar for fantasy films at the time, and I'm thrilled you mentioned 13th Warrior.... I love that film, very D&Dish. |
| verdynian12-01-06, 04:57 PM | Ummm.... have you seek Krull...... recently? The guy's pants are reason enough to ban this film. Pure cheese.... which can be good (Sword and the Sorcerer or Kull the Conqueror, anyone?), but not in Krull (dear lord, I've typed it twice!) Sorry, never got sick of it. Still love it. The soundtrack. The cheese factor. Not necessarily the first of the of the tie, just the first mentioned. And by the way, good choice on Sword & the Sorcerer. "Who dies first?" heh. |
| Sulaco12-01-06, 05:27 PM | By the same token, I don't happen to like violent sodomy from large baseball bats. Nor do I like drugs. Ah yes, hyperbole. How useful. And I've never done either, this does not make me ignorant. This makes me educated, as I've weighed everything I know about them and made an informed decision. Actually, it does make you ignorant. You say you do not like drugs but you do ont know if you like them or not as you have never tried them. I am not advocating trying them, and if you choose not to that is entirely your perogative, but you cannot form an accurate opinion as to whether you like something or not without trying it. As to the other, that is absurd and you know it. The idea that one needs to be violently sexually assualte to know whether they like it or not is, not to put too fine a point on it, bloody stupid. There may be some people who do like this but the number of them is vanishingly small. Still, the fact remains that you are indeed ignorant of both ot these acts. You really do not know if you like either of them. You choose to remain ignorant of them and, in both of these incredibly hyperbolic examples, that is a fine choice to make, but that fact remains that you are electing to remain ignorant of them. |
| Sulaco12-01-06, 05:30 PM | Willow: Still the greatest fantasy film ever made! Oh hell no, not even close. Krull, 13th Warrior, & Fellowship of the Ring: three way tie for second place. Krull is sheer crap (or should I say Krapp ;)). Worse than the D&D movie by a factor of suck to the power of crap. 13th Warrior isn't fanatsy. |
| Sulaco12-01-06, 05:34 PM | AI is pretty good Moulin Rouge was also good. Only in Bizzaro world. Those two pieces of crap are tied for first place (or is it last place) on my list of worst films fo all time. I would rather eat glass than sit through either of those ever again. What makes it even worse is that i saw both of them on the same day, and I was at someone else's place and coulnd;t leave. I think I looked something like this at the time: http://www.krusch.com/kubrick/alex.gif |
| HomerJaySimpson1312-01-06, 06:07 PM | Worst movies ever: I have only seen Dungeons & Dragons, and the Wrath of the Dragons. I am unopinionated about the third movie! have any of you heard about the Dragonlance cartoon movie (http://www.dragonlance-movie.com/movie/)? |
| thasis12-01-06, 06:21 PM | Brief and short, bad but good. Fun to watch, poor to compare to actual D&D. |
| The Livewire12-01-06, 07:02 PM | first one. Oh gods..... To waste Tom Baker like that. Wrath of the Dragon God. Campy, a bit. Lots of bits tossed in aimed at the old gamers. I enjoy it, and watch it now and again. Scourge? Never saw it. Krull? "Hmm, the Macguffin of throwing +5 is stuck in the BBEG, I'll try calling it for 5 minutes, then lament, then go get it." LadyHawke: Good movie, but only if we could get rid of the frakking soundtrack! Jason and the Argonauts. Now that's a D&D movie. As an aside (since I have the DVD) anyone else laugh out loud at the commentary track? Lidda and Krusk teasing Jozan when the cleric died is priceless. Best line in the Commetary: Krusk: "He's in a soup of his own filth!" Jozan: "It's called a bath, Krusk. We suggest you try it some time." |
| pres_man12-01-06, 07:10 PM | 13th Warrior isn't fanatsy. Antonio as a muslim, you're telling me that isn't fantastical? Hey what about: Beastmaster Clash of the Titans |
| Anung_Un_Rama12-01-06, 08:58 PM | If you ask me, the movie that is the "truest" to D&D is the 80s anime Record of the Lodoss War. Not to be a total dweeb, but I believe Record of Lodoss War came out in the very early 90's. It was based off the first Japanese rpg, which was made by Japanese high schoolers who couldn't get their hands on D&D. It was so popular their adventures were chronicled in comic, novel, and lastly anime' form. And yes, it was blatantly D&D. Woodchuck is my hero. And a Karla knock-off was my BBEG for a very long time. |
| Anung_Un_Rama12-01-06, 08:59 PM | Worst movies ever: I have only seen Dungeons & Dragons, and the Wrath of the Dragons. I am unopinionated about the third movie! have any of you heard about thr Dragonlance movie (http://www.dragonlance-movie.com/movie/)? I have never been more excited about a cartoon. The director did Exo Squad for goodness sake! I reeeeeeeally hope it doesn't bomb. |
| Chrono Nexus12-01-06, 09:12 PM | Actually, it does make you ignorant. You say you do not like drugs but you do ont know if you like them or not as you have never tried them. I am not advocating trying them, and if you choose not to that is entirely your perogative, but you cannot form an accurate opinion as to whether you like something or not without trying it. I dissagree. A person doesn't need to try something willingly to experience it first hand. Many peoples lives (including my own) are damaged by their relatives(') or friends(') abuse of drugs. Seeing the pain and self destructive behavior drug addicts put themselves through has educated me enough to know I want nothing to do with improper drug use. Back to the topic- I'd enjoy a DnD themed movie more if it was actually funny... like if it made jabs at DnD's janked mechanics in RL action. |
| Ranger REG12-02-06, 01:15 AM | Antonio as a muslim, you're telling me that isn't fantastical? Shrugs. Moors did conquered Spain at one point. |
| Atsettam12-02-06, 01:34 AM | Alright, what do you think of Merlin (My favorite film) Labyrinth Legend Willow |
| Anung_Un_Rama12-02-06, 01:56 AM | Alright, what do you think of Merlin (My favorite film) Willow Labyrinth Legend Holy crap, Labyrinth and Legend are both in my top 20 favorite movies EVER. Tim Curry as Darkness in Legend almost (almost) beats his performance in Rocky Horror (I'm a RHPS geek :embarrass ). And David Bowie is freaking amazing in Labyrinth. Can't say I like either of your other favorites, though. |
| verdynian12-02-06, 04:55 AM | Oh hell no, not even close. Oh hell yes. ;) Krull is sheer crap (or should I say Krapp ;)). Worse than the D&D movie by a factor of suck to the power of crap. That's the beauty of free will. A person is allowed to have an opinion, even when it's worse than mine. ;) Seriously though, Sulaco. I respect your opinion, but I would appreciate it if you could go more into detail as to why you disagree. Unless, of course, that jumps this thread too far off topic. Then, nevermind. :) |
| CharlieRock12-02-06, 10:27 AM | Ummm.... have you seek Krull...... recently? The guy's pants are reason enough to ban this film. Pure cheese.... which can be good (Sword and the Sorcerer or Kull the Conqueror, anyone?), but not in Krull (dear lord, I've typed it twice!) . Wasn't sword and the sorcerer the one where the dude had a three bladed sword with a hidden dagger pommel. I remember when that came out, all of us playing 'needed' a hidden dagger in the pommel. |
| CharlieRock12-02-06, 10:37 AM | Hawk the Slayer is bad. I mean really bad. It's so bad, it should be referenced in dictionaries as an example of bad. Don't watch it. I guess you didn't like the Neon Ping Pong Balls of Color Spray? ;) (I know it couldn't have been the Rapid Firing Automatic Longbow the elf dude had :D) Antonio as a muslim, you're telling me that isn't fantastical? Hey what about: Beastmaster Clash of the Titans I thought 13th Warrior was fantasy-ish. They were fighting Bear dudes (and Poisonous Bear Dudettes). :D Beastmaster was cool ,and the Monsters that starred in CoT was Ray Harryhausen classic (a clockwork animal companion, LoL) |
| verdynian12-02-06, 04:16 PM | I guess you didn't like the Neon Ping Pong Balls of Color Spray? ;) (I know it couldn't have been the Rapid Firing Automatic Longbow the elf dude had :D) If you're referencing Hawk, I gotta admit, I really don't remember. Thankfully. I keep falling asleep during that movie every time I try and watch it. The only things I remember is that there was a lot (and I do mean a lot) of horse-riding in that movie. And that Hawk is broken up about his father's death, until his dad gives him the sword. At which point he seems to completely forget about his dad dying. Father! Please don't die! Oh! Look, a cool new sword! Unless Hawk suffered from attention deficit disorder, then it makes complete sense. ;) |

| Greg K12-02-06, 08:29 PM | Ok. I already said that I liked the second DND movies. Other fantasy movies I enjoyed: Beastmaster (only the first one) Clash of the Titans Conan Dragonslayer Heavy Metal (does this count for one or two of the stories?) Excalibur Ladyhawke Name of the Rose (okay not sword and sorcery, but still kind of fits) Roar (ok, this was a tv series) Movies that I did not like: Krull Hawk the Slayer Sword and the Sorcerer |
| Greg K12-02-06, 08:29 PM | Does anyone remember a short lived TV series called Archer: Fugitive From the Empire? It was from the early 80's. |
| Anung_Un_Rama12-02-06, 08:50 PM | Ok. I already said that I liked the second DND movies. Excalibur Ladyhawke Name of the Rose (okay not sword and sorcery, but still kind of fits) Roar (ok, this was a tv series) Movies that I did not like: Krull Hawk the Slayer Sword and the Sorcerer I have to vehemently disagree on Beastmaster there. That's because Andre Norton gave it her all to not be associated with the film based off her book. That's usually a sign that the movie is bad. Also, it bored me to tears. However, I loved the Conan movies. Go figure! |
| cat_god12-02-06, 09:21 PM | I liked the second. I thought the first was pretty bad. Scourge of Worlds was enjoyable. I own Record of Lodoss War, it's one of my favorite anime. Clash of the Titans was fun, but I haven't seen any of the other movies that you guys are listing off. |

| YamiSouru12-03-06, 02:29 AM | i found the second movie to be enjoyable but i couldnt sit through it. mostly because i keept looking at what was happening and going "...how in the nine hells are they getting such low rolls!?" or going "My charactor could have easily done alot better then that." and at one point "What are they! level one!" Though i must admit i much enjoyed the rogue in wrath of the dragon god :D i havnt seen the other 2 |

And Highlander2 strikes me as an awfully lame sequel as well. Ah, Ninja Scroll. The only reason I would ever play Oriental Adventures. Never before have I seen ninjas cut apart their enemies, only to be sprayed with 30 gallons of highly-pressurized blood. And the voice acting is charmingly silly :P |
| cat_god12-03-06, 05:00 PM | I own the first series. I liked the second one too. I haven't seen Crystania. Is Ninja Scroll good? I've heard good things. |
| Requiem_VampireKnight12-03-06, 05:18 PM | For starters: Dungeons & Dragons: The Movie was alright. A LOT of people had to gripe about this one. It also had what some people call "a Contact ending" (for those who have seen the movie 'Contact' you know what I'm talking about). The characters were good and the casting was excellent in a few roles. They really needed to apologize for this one. Scourge of Worlds was fun. I enjoyed it every time I watched it. I still haven't yet found the last ending where everybody lives (including the Cleric), but I liked it. There's humor, interactive story, and adventure in a movie. When I first heard of it, I couldn't wait to get my hands on one. Scourge was good, but a far cry in the form of an apology for the first movie. Wrath of the Dragon God was AMAZING!!! Casting was perfect with the exception of Damodar. Why was he included in this one? Sure the actor fits the role, but a character from the first movie?! In this one, they actually went more in depth about races, magic, and monsters. Take those three things and compare it to the first movie, and the first movie sucks. The characters had more to them. I really enjoyed the third movie. After I watched it, I said "Apology accepted." When I ordered it, I had accidentally ordered two copies and gave one to a friend telling him that "Wizards says they're sorry." In conclusion, the third movie Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God was by far the better movie. But that's just MY opinion. To quote a local critic, "Other opinion are welcome, but wrong." |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph12-03-06, 06:44 PM | The idea that one needs to be violently sexually assualte to know whether they like it or not is, not to put too fine a point on it, bloody stupid. Not that bad when you consider that the average anime characters body contains about 80 gallons of blood. Little known fact: One of the requirements for joining the "Crazy 88's" was that at least one of your parrents had to be an anime character. Man, they couldn't fight, but they bled with the best of 'em. |

If the average anime character has 80 gallons, than a NS character would have, oh, roughly 1250681 gallons. Give or take a few. |

If you think that Scourge of Worlds exist to compensate for the first D&D film by Courtney Solomon, then you are embarassingly and gravely mistaken. :nonono: Courtney Solomon is solely responsible for the first D&D film, not WotC. Their fault is promoting/hyping the film. |
| Kargush12-05-06, 05:13 AM | I see some movie titles thrown about, but there seems to be a few forgotten. Like these: Highlander(ok, not strickly fantasy, but still) The Magic Sword(1962)(the music alone is worth it! And Basil Rathbone as the evil sorceror, OMFG!!!) Fire and Ice Dragonheart And for series: Korgoth of Barbaria: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKMi44kbrAQ Now there's a propper DnD barbarian! And by the Gods, Krull was bad... So very, very, very, bad... I regret ever watching it... |
| CharlieRock12-05-06, 08:41 AM | Fire and Ice? The *ahem* 'western' anime :D In that category we must add Wizards (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076929/) (not of the coast, the plain old variety) :P |
| Rolof12-05-06, 10:44 AM | The movies were hideous, the first one was waaay overhyped, so despite the fact that I heard it was bad from friends and online sources, I still watched it. Having been forewarned though, I only paid 4 bucks to rent it vs $7.50 in the theatre. Even then I was sadly disappointed. The second one I watched out of morbid curiousity I suppose, thinking "Well, they couldn't do THAT badly TWICE, could they?" Boy was I wrong. In my own defense, at least this time I had the wisdom to not actually blow cash on the rental, instead using a Blockbuster rewards free rental for it. This is the first time I've heard of the third one. Not taking any chances on it this time, either. In some ways I can agree with those who said they thought the second one was moderately better; then again the first one wouldn't have been quite so bad if it wasn't for the hideous Snails character. I actually rather enjoyed the thieves' guild traproom scene, and the end battle with all the dragons wasn't a total loss either. As usual, I was also annoyed by the portrayal of the Dwarf in the movie, very few movies get it right or treat them with any dignity, in my opinion: "She's too skinny lad! What you need is a good dwarven woman... with a beard you CAN HANG ON TOO! AHAHAH!" is just another example of the dumb drunken Dwarf stereotype I'm sick of. At least Gimli is decent in LOTR, even though he can't hope to compare to the godlike Elves. As for the Eragon/Paulini comments...I've read the first two books, and I can't decide whether to love/envy him or hate/despise him. I sorta aspired to be a writer when I was a teen; and when I heard that this 16 year old kid actually got a novel published and was doing well, I was impressed, so I bought it and read it. It was an ok yarn, and yeah, I could see where he was at the least a bit influenced by previous authors but I shrugged that off, cause according to some people George Lucas ripped off Frank Herbert's Dune when he created Star Wars. But then I found out that both the kid's parents are already well established in the writing/publishing game, and without them it's questionable if he ever would have gotten published at all. My admiration and respect kinda soured after that...I remember thinking "Well gee, if MY parents owned their own publishing company, _I_ could have written a novel too". |
| SiouLubb12-05-06, 12:26 PM | First movie: I should have gouged my eyes out and rubbed salt in the empty sockets. Would have been less painful. Second Movie: An improvement. A definite improvement. I'm not saying "good", I'm saying "better". It's kind of painful in a way- there are dozens of direct-to-video movie franchises out there. DnD is screaming to be one of them. Just in the same way that if you rent "Poison Ivy VI", you know what you're getting, you'd know what you were getting by renting a DnD DVD. I refuse to believe that a fantasy game which has spawned so many excellent novels and beloved characters cannot be successfully translated to another medium. All that needs to happen is the right script with the right people. DnD has the makings of a movie franchise and the second movie sketches the bare bones of it. A few traps, a small dungeon or two, a few exotic monsters, the PCs group assembling and coming together, etc. A good movie- no a series of movies is possible. Keep faith and keep pushing. My favourite DnD movie which isn't "DnD" is "Brotherhood of the Wolf. No question, it has all the elements of DnD and a good DnD movie, just in 18th century France. |
| Ocalus12-05-06, 12:48 PM | I remember thinking "Well gee, if MY parents owned their own publishing company, _I_ could have written a novel too". Yup. Pretty much. There is also the "he's only 16" thing going on, too. If some 36 year old had written it it'd be just another forgettable fantasy shelf-filler. He got published cos of his parents' connections and the fact he was just a kid. If his parent's were bankers, say, and he tried to get that thing published as an adult he'd be able to paper his room with rejection letters. Can't wait for him to make the Eungeons and Eragons RPG. ;) |

Nazis, using evil mind-controlling projectors, fighting elves? With rotoscope animation? I wanted to cry. It was simply more proof that Ralph Bakshi shouldn't be allowed to make movies. Wizards was just as bad as the Lord of the Rings cartoon. I've also never seen an ending as anti-climactic as that of Wizards. |

| Stormonu12-05-06, 05:05 PM | Ah, someone beat me to mentioning Brotherhood of the Wolf, and Fire & Ice - both pretty good movies. Actually, I'd rate Bram Stoker's Dracula a better D&D movie than the D&D movie. And I hated that movie. 1st D&D movie: The scene with the traps is about the only redeemable part of the movie. It sucks so bad, that its turned its offspring ugly. 2nd D&D movie: Okay for a "direct to DVD/TV" movie, but could have been better. Scourge of Worlds: fun, wish they'd make more! LoTR pretty much rules the roost of fantasy, Willow comes in a strong second. Personally, I like the Harry Potter movies third, but the books are way better. King Kong makes a pretty non-standard fantasy adventure (hey, it's the Isle of Dread! or AKA Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure) Despite their cheesiness, fantasy movies that I like: Hawk the Slayer Dragonslayer Conan the Barbarian (the 1st one, extended edition) The Oddessey (TV movie; 2nd part is great, the 1st half so-so) Seventh Voyage of Sinbad/Golden Voyage of Sinbad Is the Dragonlance movie still in consideration or has it been dropped? Last I heard, the movie contract died out with no takers... |

| EntropyDawn12-06-06, 10:39 AM | While they werent the worst movies I ever saw.... they could have been alot better. ITs like my H.p Lovecraft movies though, they build your hopes of that the movies will compare at any length to the stories, or the games and then with a poor budget or script they let you down. If its on its ok, but I wouldnt actively go out looking for a D&D movie again, Not even Jeremy Irons could pull the D&D one out of the rut and he is one of my favorite actors.. :( IA! IA! Cthulhu Ftagn! |
| angryman12-06-06, 11:35 AM | Dawn of the Dead (remake) was a great D&D movie, because it was a zombie movie, and it had...imaginative...zombies. (not wanting to give away the plot) Evil Dead 3 "Army of Darkness" is one of the best B-grade movies ever. It's (one of) the most quoted movies I've ever heard of. Not really D&D, but it has wise-ass undead and, well, Ash. Bad Taste, Peter Jackson pre-Hollywood, aka, "What you can do with ten grand in the backwoods of New Zealand." Like LotR but with crappy claymation & the funniest quote in a movie, "Derrek's gone ape-sh*t!" (after one guy falls off a cliff and keeps his brain in his head with a belt) Rollerskating Samurai 80s Movie (?). OK, I forget the movie's real name, but it had seedy-looking C-grade actors with fake katanas on rollerskates. The ONLY movie worse than the D&D movie. |
| Ocalus12-06-06, 12:08 PM | Not to be a total dweeb, but I believe Record of Lodoss War came out in the very early 90's. It was based off the first Japanese rpg, which was made by Japanese high schoolers who couldn't get their hands on D&D. It was so popular their adventures were chronicled in comic, novel, and lastly anime' form. IIRC it was actually meant originally to be a D&D movie but TSR would not give them the rights to make it officially D&D. They went ahead and made it anyway, it was hugely successful, and spawned a number of other media including it's own RPG. |
| Shadow81012-06-06, 12:41 PM | I thought they should have done them in animation with the same artwork as the books. At the start of the 1st movie I thought the animation was fantastic! I was excited right about until the very first shot of that tool for an actor and the actual movie. I will say the "Good times" quote was quality! Why not do it with the great artwork that has sold us on the game in the books? ;) Anyone agree? |
| Shadow81012-06-06, 12:45 PM | Hell... It should have been Mialee, Tordek, Lidda and Redgar |

| High Octane12-06-06, 05:37 PM | Theres 2 Record of Lodoss Wars series. One is older, and I believe a prequel to the other. In the second series, released in the 90s, which I own, theres a lot of references to adventures past done. Woodchuck is referenced for example, but he is never actually seen. |
| FeceMan12-06-06, 06:46 PM | The only character I liked in the second D&D movie was killed very quickly. Thus, the movie sucked. (More.) |

It was called something like "Rollerskating samurai" and it was truly, truly awful. It wasn't even a C-grade movie, it was so much worse. It was also the story of a cult in America, and funded by this cult, so I guess it's also a cult movie, in the literal sense. |
| talkingbeatles12-07-06, 03:22 AM | Yeah, I'm surprised more people haven't metioned Dragonheart. That movie rocked. And what about Princess Mononoke? That was pretty fantasy, what with all the gods and demons and what not. Besides, thats one of Miyazaki's best. |

Connery as the voice of the dragon. It wasn't BAD. Just... meh... |
| Ocalus12-07-06, 10:49 AM | Yeah, I'm surprised more people haven't metioned Dragonheart. Probably cos it was ****ing terrible. And what about Princess Mononoke? That was pretty fantasy, what with all the gods and demons and what not. Pretty? Yes. Not so much with the "good," though, especially if you like things like a comprehensible plot. Besides, thats one of Miyazaki's best. That ain't saying much. |

That ain't saying much. Disagree with everything. Except that Princess Mononoke did have a kind of hard to follow plot. Maybe it just didnt translate. I liked Dragonheart and Miyazaki's movies. Watch Howl's Moving Castle for a perfect example of magic in action. And Draco was the best example of a well played dragon I've ever seen. |
| SiouLubb12-07-06, 11:20 AM | [QUOTE=Ocalus;10846713]Probably cos it was ****ing terrible. [QUOTE] Indeed. One thing the DnD movies got right is that Dragons are meant to be huge and to break things and kill people. the "Dragon as good guy" thing is remarkably unheroic. Like Dragonheart- let's watch a knight on a dragon take on a bunch of armoured knights. Unless you're rooting to the knights, that's as undramatic as watching a tank vs infantry armed with rifles in open terrain. Mildly amusing, but not compelling. |
| Ocalus12-07-06, 11:22 AM | And Draco was the best example of a well played dragon I've ever seen. Nah, that honor goes to the dragon in 1981's Dragonslayer. The flick is 25 years old and there is no CGI at all and it is still the best dragon ever on film. |

| CharlieRock12-07-06, 02:07 PM | "I've ever seen." Never saw Dragonslayer. Aw, you poor thing. :( Yeah, I'm surprised more people haven't metioned Dragonheart. That movie rocked. And what about Princess Mononoke? That was pretty fantasy, what with all the gods and demons and what not. Besides, thats one of Miyazaki's best. Miyazaki is great. So was Kurozawa (different style, I know :P). I disagree that Mononoke was the former's best, though. I thought Spirited Away was. |

| talkingbeatles12-07-06, 02:20 PM | I didn't say it was Miyazaki's best. Just one of them. Truth be told, I think I liked My Neighbor Totoro best. It was probably also the first anime I've ever seen. Maybe I need to give Dragonheart another viewing. I've seen it quite a few times, but I haven't seen it in a while. I'll check out Dragonslayer. |
| jollythehappyminotaur12-09-06, 09:34 PM | i thought the first one sucked but the second one (wrath of the dragon god) was very enjoyable after i saw it on TV i went out and bought the dvd than showed it to all my friends. the rogue was my favorite character he was really funny and sneaky. i kind of want to make a character based off of him |
| Duckman9712-09-06, 11:04 PM | My reviews Dungeons and Dragons: equivalent to Highlander 2 (both the theatrical AND Renegade versions) I refuse to recognize it's existence. Whoever came up with this piece of crap rolled a Nat. 1 on thier Wisdom check. Wrath of the Dragon God: It was decent for a low-budget Direct-to-Video movie. At least the characters had flaws: the Barbarian's reaction when the Rogue set off the trap in the goblin/orc village and the wizards' imperfect mastery of the Teleportation spell are prime examples that heroes are not uberpowerful. The story had flaws but at least it was watchable. Scourge of Worlds: Like Darkwolf said, this is a "Choose your own Adventure" in the video media. It's still entertaining nonetheless. -Duck |
| Duckman9712-09-06, 11:06 PM | Have you seen Nausicaa of the Vallyer of Wind? It's so much better! Ohmu are the best giant bugs EVER! Yes!!! another Nausicaa fan. A thousand blessings on you and your house. -Duck |
| Anung_Un_Rama12-10-06, 12:14 AM | Yes!!! another Nausicaa fan. A thousand blessings on you and your house. -Duck Nausicaa was so good I bought the copy of Wind Warriors at my local thrift store so I could hide it away from anyone else who didn't know how hideously mangled it is compared to the actuall, complete version of the darn film. It is currently locked away in a closet, and it will hopefully never see the light of day (or my VCR). Crap, I'm a nerd! |
| Doom_Linnorm12-10-06, 05:53 AM | Aye Naussica rocks, but Mononoke also still beats the crap out of most other Anime. I personaly am a great fan of Dragonheart and suspect people are confusing it with *holds back some vomit* the *wrench in agony* sequal..... ugh... excuse me. *goes around a corner, disgusting sounds of bile paying spewed onto the ground in large quantities, some green liquid oozes around the corner*. Ugh... sorry.. the second Dragonheart was... even worse then the first DnD movie.. and THAT is saying something. If you want to watch the first DnD movie but then worth watching, watch this version of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vCgcJneKm4 Its split into 13 clips, its quite funny. "I cast: Magic Noogi!" "Whats with all this Destiny crap?!" "Ugh.. I stepped in Damedar's (Damn it all) oatmeal bath!" |
| CharlieRock12-10-06, 08:58 AM | Have you seen Nausicaa of the Vallyer of Wind? It's so much better! Ohmu are the best giant bugs EVER! No. Well, maybe. Was it about an amnesiac woman? My first anime was Akira. It was so disturbing to pop-hollywood types it had to be shown in the indie theatres only (the ones that run Rocky Horror ,year after year). It still made its impression among the audiences, and next thing I knew, there were animes all over the place :D |
| Ocalus12-11-06, 01:12 PM | I personaly am a great fan of Dragonheart and suspect people are confusing it with *holds back some vomit* the *wrench in agony* sequal..... ugh... excuse me. Nope, no confusion at all. I haven't seen the sequel - nor, I imagine, have many others - and so it really isn't possible for me to confuse the two. Dragonheart was so unbearably bad it would take a court-order and an armed-escort to make me watch it's sequel. |

I'll do just about anything for that. |
| High Octane12-12-06, 01:04 AM | Bought the D&D series on DVD. Watching them now. Let me just say.... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA it's hilarious. Sooooo bad. |
| CharlieRock12-12-06, 01:20 AM | I got very excited when I seen the D&D cartoon was to be released on T.V.. I was little disappointed it wasn't more D&D-ish, but still watched it :) |
