10-16-06, 12:22 PM Ok, reading the forum about BADD being still around got me on this thought. It is generally accepted that most people outside of the hobby (and most in it as well, lol) consider us nerds or geeks.

What is the funniest representation of D&D nerds that you have seen in TV or the movies? Or any other medium for that matter?

I'll start with the TV show Reno 911!

I forget that comics name, but he does the greatest sketch of D&D nerd I have ever seen. They have had many bits with him and playing D&D in his garage. It's frackin' hilarious.

10-16-06, 12:27 PM MC Chris's new album Dungeon Master of Ceremonies. Saw an ad for it last night on Adult Swim. It's full of geeky sweetness, the album that is. Other than that, I really haven't deen anything else other than the White and Nerdy video.

And, come to think of it, finding out Vin Diesel is a DnD freak was a bit of a shock....

And in the Simpsons, when Homer goes to university, he plays D&D with his roommates.. he said with a touch of shame that he has been killed by an elf.

10-16-06, 06:20 PM Well, there is also a webisode, I think, of Retarded Animal Babies that deals with DnD. There is also the movie TAPS where the paramilitary kids are talking about getting together for the weekly DnD movie. Then there is the be all end all Mazes and Monsters with Tom Hanks. I know there's tons more, but I was trying to think of more recent ones.

The DnD movies, even though they were pretty bad.
Best of all the movie called The Gamers, It was really funny and I think about first ed books. There making a gamers 2 for anyone else that has seen the first one.

This cartoon has more DnD references then you can shake a stick at, well without getting your arm tired.

One episode was based on servants of Cthulhu making phony phone calls (Call of Cthulhu).
In another episode, Billy was searching a trunk and found a "Scroll of Magic Missile".... ahh good times.

Billy and mandy also with a ep were they were put in a game reilty thing. Going into the castle, full of traps, fighting monsters, the usaly dnd thing.

Involved was a pimply-kid conspiracy theorist who when being interviewed by the parapsychologist about standing up to the authorities came up with the classic line:

"Hey, I didn't spend ten years playing Dungeons and Dragons without learning a thing or two about courage!"

Laugh? I nearly wet myself ...

The cartoon Dexter's Lab had a whole episode where Dexter was the game master running a game for his pals and he got them all killed. Then Dee Dee asked to play and she was the game master and the did a quest for the grail which ended up being just a cup that would never spill

10-16-06, 11:19 PM Krogoth the barbarian is suppose to air on adult swim (some time), the pilot involves a few people rolling dice to see who talks to Krogoth.

Im not surprised that tv shows, especially ones dealing with fantasy, occult, magic type stuff has DnD refrences in it. Who else would write that sort of thing but a bunch of DM's and players. Dont even try to tell me you havent at one point thought "this campaign would make a great tv show or movie" :P

10-17-06, 01:32 AM there was a SNL skit (with Paris Hilton, IIRC) that had her in a parody of a phone sex ad; the girl on the phone was said to be a '20th level Dungeon Master' who'd be happy to hear all about your character, or something like that.

Naturally, the first thing to run through my mind was "hey, DM's don't have levels"......

That was Patton Oswalt and it was REALLY funny. He shoots a guy with a crossbow (I think) in a gaming session gone horribly wrong and the police show up. I won't give anymore away but check it out.

The best thing about that episode was Dexter's character when DeeDee was DMing; he was a hobbit-type with BURROWING +5 as his only skill... classic.

I forgot about Homer at college on the Simpsons! That was a great sketch too.

10-17-06, 12:15 PM I love the Fear of Girls film... saw it on YouTube a while ago.

Weird Al has a nice D&D reference in his song White and Nerdy... quick and easy, but it's a nice nod.

I'm a huge fan of the show Charmed (readies flame resistant shield) and the writers of that show have to be huge D&D nerds. Every monster feels like it came right out of the D&D books... complete with abilities, weaknesses, hitpoints... maybe not hitpoints.... but check out the Wendigo episode... straight D&D stuff... felt like I was reading along with my Fiend Folio.

My personal favorite D&D references come from a comic strip I did for my college newspaper... man... I'm funny.:tongue:

10-17-06, 02:08 PM I don't know if anybody saw this show, it was BRILLIANT and of course got cancelled. FREAKS AND GEEKS had an episode where they play D&D, and it gets mentioned by a minor character in several episodes.

10-17-06, 02:47 PM The sitcom ,think it was 'Christine'(?) ,starring Christina Applegate. One episode she goes on a date with a guy who (pure smoothness here) gets her to play D&D .She calls her friend because she is not having fun. Her friend tells Christine that she has been through this before with other guys ,and the "only way out" was to die. So, she hung up and played some more and promptly killed herself in-game. The guys offered to bend the rules to get her to stay(alive) but, she declines. :cool:

Hehe....sounds like someone is in denial....J/K. There were a lot of people who made fun of me for playing DnD, but I was bigger, stronger, and smarter...So I beat the hell out of them. No one makes fun of me anymore.

I actually had a lot of the guys from my platoon playing DnD by the end of our first tour in Iraq. Not much to do over there on your off time......

His friend was trying to prove that you couldn't dodge an arrow point blank with a 'magic missile enhancement.'

The last part when he tried to run was hilarious.

10-19-06, 12:01 AM Simpsons: Many D&D references, but the one that sticks out in my mind has Comic Book Store Guy sitting on a bus in the background wearing a helmet and a 'Dungeon Master' t-shirt.

X-Files: Best reference mentioned in previous post. The Lone Gunmen were into D&D and even talked about having a memorial game of D&D for someone who had got killed.

And what movie was it where the opening scene was a character (Dabney Coleman) named Jack Flack who was running around at the end of the sequence he's about to get rolled over by a d20. And the kid picks up the fig of Jack (the same kid from E.T.) and says "Jack Flack always escapes." **edit** Cloak & Daggar

But the best reference EVER? Milwaukee, Pat McCurdy show on a Gen Con weekend. People shout out topics and he sings a little song about it. I yell out "Gen Con", the stage goes dark, a strobe light comes on and Pat says "I am the Prozac King. I have rolled a twelve, now you must die." I wet myself laughing the rest of the show.

This movie really is the poster child of negative D&D press back in the 80s. However, if you really watch the movie, Tom Hank's character had a break with reality brought on by factors other than the game "Mazes and Monsters."

Also, in the movie Airheads, a crowd of apparently "cool" people were confessing some not-so-cool things they used to do. Someone in the crowd yelled out, "I used to play Dungeons & Dragons!"

According to rumor, it was originally supposed to be called Dungeons & Dragons, and actually feature the game books themselves, but the idea of lawsuits changed that. Whatever you do, though, don't watch it. I though it would be hilariously bad, and I was quite wrong. It's terribly boring, and only one scene stands out in my mind as being funny.

Those boys go on to face down an army of 17th-century mercenaries, armed with shotguns. The reason? There happens to be a very pretty girl who the boys intend to protect and the mercenaries intend to rape. Even if you include the 'pretty girl' aspect, that's still exalted behavior. One of the boys ends up marrying the girl.

I TOTALLY remember that, might not seem so impressive, but I must've been like 4 at the time and that is my earliest memory of DnD, the best thing is, I can totally remember lines from that!

"I attack the dwarf(some other part of sentance I forgot)"
"I retaliate with my two-headed battleaxe"
others question intitial attack
"Well he's been no use since the (goblin?) encounter (more I forget)"

For some reason that memory has stuck with me, can't remember a smidgen about the rest of that show though.

About the first half of it is them playing DnD, while the second half is the trivia-off ("No stupid questions like: "what's Lucy Lawless's bra size"..."I know that one!"..."As do all sad boys").

In the series finale of Buffy, they play D&D And in the Simpsons, when Homer goes to university, he plays D&D with his roommates.. he said with a touch of shame that he has been killed by an elf. I forgot about Homer at college on the Simpsons! That was a great sketch too.

I'm a huge fan of the show Charmed (readies flame resistant shield) and the writers of that show have to be huge D&D nerds. Every monster feels like it came right out of the D&D books... complete with abilities, weaknesses, hitpoints... maybe not hitpoints.... but check out the Wendigo episode... straight D&D stuff... felt like I was reading along with my Fiend Folio. My personal favorite D&D references come from a comic strip I did for my college newspaper... man... I'm funny.:tongue:

One episode she goes on a date with a guy who (pure smoothness here) gets her to play D&D .She calls her friend because she is not having fun. Her friend tells Christine that she has been through this before with other guys ,and the "only way out" was to die. So, she hung up and played some more and promptly killed herself in-game. The guys offered to bend the rules to get her to stay(alive) but, she declines. :cool:

X-Files: Best reference mentioned in previous post. The Lone Gunmen were into D&D and even talked about having a memorial game of D&D for someone who had got killed. And what movie was it where the opening scene was a character (Dabney Coleman) named Jack Flack who was running around at the end of the sequence he's about to get rolled over by a d20. And the kid picks up the fig of Jack (the same kid from E.T.) and says "Jack Flack always escapes." edit Cloak & Daggar But the best reference EVER? Milwaukee, Pat McCurdy show on a Gen Con weekend. People shout out topics and he sings a little song about it. I yell out "Gen Con", the stage goes dark, a strobe light comes on and Pat says "I am the Prozac King. I have rolled a twelve, now you must die." I wet myself laughing the rest of the show.

Whatever you do, though, don't watch it. I though it would be hilariously bad, and I was quite wrong. It's terribly boring, and only one scene stands out in my mind as being funny. "A gorvil!"

Mike shouted after the rapidly receding boys: "Remember, dammit - wait!" "Fat chance," muttered Frank. "You're looking at four knights in shining armor. F__ing D&D paladins, no less. (1632 by Eric Flint, p172-173) Those boys go on to face down an army of 17th-century mercenaries, armed with shotguns. The reason? There happens to be a very pretty girl who the boys intend to protect and the mercenaries intend to rape. Even if you include the 'pretty girl' aspect, that's still exalted behavior. One of the boys ends up marrying the girl. Heh. Paladins with shotguns - "Clickety-SMITE!"

"I attack the dwarf(some other part of sentance I forgot)" "I retaliate with my two-headed battleaxe" others question intitial attack "Well he's been no use since the (goblin?) encounter (more I forget)" For some reason that memory has stuck with me, can't remember a smidgen about the rest of that show though.
