| DougyJ07-03-07, 04:48 AM | So I saw a ..tempting little Teaser on the PSP Site for Dungeons and Dragons Tactics, however the description was very vague but the screenshots weren't to shabby. Anyone else up in arms about this??? Also Linkage..Seeing as how this was at the E3 I guess it is no News http://www.us.playstation.com/PSP/Games/Dungeons_and_Dragons_Tactics |
| JolanthusTrel07-03-07, 06:10 AM | Up in arms that it will be on the PSP? |
| NobodyRemembersThis07-03-07, 09:28 AM | It does seem a crime that the worst selling platform gets a D&D game. :P |
| Phrennzy07-03-07, 10:30 AM | I totally thought this was a thread on D&D on PCP. I may need glasses. |
| Psychoticpsymon07-03-07, 12:25 PM | It does seem a crime that the worst selling platform gets a D&D game. :P You must not have actually looked at the sales figures :/ |
| Montravont07-03-07, 12:58 PM | You must not have actually looked at the sales figures :/ True.. the PS3 actually does rate worse.. but that's about it. |
| Archangel_James07-03-07, 01:00 PM | You must not have actually looked at the sales figures :/ That's right. PSP does outsell PS3, doesn't it. That doesn't change the fact that if there's going to be a portable D&D game, it should be on DS. |
| NobodyRemembersThis07-03-07, 01:18 PM | That's right. PSP does outsell PS3, doesn't it. That doesn't change the fact that if there's going to be a portable D&D game, it should be on DS.Or, for that matter, the Ps2, seeing as the coding for PsP and Ps2 are the same. ;) The PsP is like the Game Gear - looks pretty and is slightly more powerful, but everyone is going to (rightly) stick with the Nintendo portable. Because Nintendo knows what it is doing with handhelds. |
| Edymnion07-03-07, 01:45 PM | Sweet. Somebody call me when it comes out on a real system. |
| NobodyRemembersThis07-03-07, 01:53 PM | Sweet. Somebody call me when it comes out on a real system. That's what they make emulators for ;) |
| _Jayne_Cobb_07-03-07, 02:51 PM | Sweet. Somebody call me when it comes out on a real system. Ring ring...ring ring...We're sorry, Edy is a unable to accept that the PSP is a real system. If you would like to make a version of a D&D handheld game that looks like ass please release it for the DS when you hear the tone...BEEEEEP... ;) |
| NobodyRemembersThis07-03-07, 03:03 PM | Ring ring...ring ring...We're sorry, Edy is a unable to accept that the PSP is a real system. If you would like to make a version of a D&D handheld game that looks like ass please release it for the DS when you hear the tone...BEEEEEP... ;)Obviously you have not seen the screen shots for FFXII on the DS or you wouldn't be saying that :P |
| _Jayne_Cobb_07-03-07, 04:05 PM | Obviously you have not seen the screen shots for FFXII on the DS or you wouldn't be saying that :P I have, and I remain unimpressed. Sprites pasted on a pre-rendered background with flat "pop-in" images for dialog may have been good enough 10 years ago but not anymore. |
| Psychoticpsymon07-03-07, 04:37 PM | I have an I remain unimpressed. Sprites pasted on a pre-rendered background with flat "pop-in" images for dialog may have been good enough 10 years ago but not anymore. Seriously. Have you guys even seen Monster Hunter Freedom? Jak and Dakster? [sp?] Edit: Thrillville for that matter. |
| Ian031107-03-07, 04:48 PM | What does it matter? It could be on the Xbox 360 or PS3 (I'm looking at graphics, not console sales figures, folks), it will probably disappoint most DnD fans, though it could do well among other sets of gamers, or not, I don't really have an opinion. |
| Archangel_James07-03-07, 11:20 PM | I have, and I remain unimpressed. Sprites pasted on a pre-rendered background with flat "pop-in" images for dialog may have been good enough 10 years ago but not anymore. I'm not going to argue with you on the importance of graphics in video games (especially handhelds), but I will say that I'm surprised that a D&D player cares about visuals this much. While we're talking about real video game systems, I think I recall hearing mention of a D&D game for Wii. It was an announcement and nothing more, but does anyone remember this? |
| JolanthusTrel07-03-07, 11:29 PM | I love my PSP... (well when I play it) Fills in an hour and a bit void while traveling to and from work. I'm rather glad it's on the PSP, otherwise I wouldn't buy the game. There is nothing on the DS specifically that Interests me. |
| Silverthumb12807-03-07, 11:46 PM | Fully utilising the 3.5 rules? So I can play Pun-Pun, then, right? Is that what the two "P's" in PSP stand for? Pun-Stinkin-Pun? |
| Goreg Skullcrusher07-04-07, 12:01 AM | While we're talking about real video game systems, I think I recall hearing mention of a D&D game for Wii. I so want to be able to play bardic music using a Wii-mote. |
| _Jayne_Cobb_07-04-07, 10:17 AM | I'm not going to argue with you on the importance of graphics in video games (especially handhelds), but I will say that I'm surprised that a D&D player cares about visuals this much. I am a graphic designer. Visuals are my bread-and-butter. I never claimed visuals were the most important part, simply that if this game were ported to the DS it would like like ass. While we're talking about real video game systems, I think I recall hearing mention of a D&D game for Wii. It was an announcement and nothing more, but does anyone remember this? Okay, where's the "real video game system" part? ;) |
| terracustos07-04-07, 11:25 AM | I personally dont see the point in the PSP. Sony should stay away from handhelds. It has annoyed me that there have been several good gaming ideas yet they were only released for PSP. I loved the film 300 yet that only came out on PSP which i dont understand. That game had so much potential and a huge market for it yet they restrict it to the PSP which will lower the amount of people actually buying it and restricts what you can actually do with the game. I think the same will happen with D&D Tactics. First off all, i dont know why, but most gamers i know seen to have a gameboy or DS compared to the PSP. Not sure whether this is to do with the games for it or what the system can do? Anyways, i think the bigger market for games like this is on Nintendo based handhelds as they know what they are doing and i believe the games will be better on them. I prefer PCs and DSs so i would prefer it if they actually made it for them and just scrapped the PSP. Anyways, rant over, does anyone agree? |
| Legendarius07-04-07, 12:12 PM | Personally, this game, if the game play is good and the graphics are half decent might be a reason for me to buy a PSP. I don't currently own any portables (if you don't count a Turbo Express from about 15+ years ago). I agree it is somewhat surprising that it is only being released for a portable platform. That being said, maybe if, as one of the earlier posters mentioned, it is in fact basically just a PS2 in a small package then perhaps the code development costs were more reasonable than trying to make a top of the line game for the Xbox 360 or PS3 where the consumer demands superior graphics. A smaller screen means you can get away with less detail. I thought this was supposed to be out in June? If so does anyone have the game yet and can they provide commentary on the actual graphics (vs. screen shots) and the game play? How well does it capture D&D 3.5 turn based combat? L |
| Archangel_James07-04-07, 12:15 PM | I am a graphic designer. Visuals are my bread-and-butter.Bingo. But come to think of it, wouldn't amazing non-realistic graphics be more interesting to you than amazing realistic graphics? You should look into Feel the Magic and Electroplankton for DS. At least check out some screen shots. Those two game are works of art, in my opinion. I never claimed visuals were the most important part, simply that if this game were ported to the DS it would like like ass. That's true. DS ports rarely work--I loved Super Mario 64 DS, but most people couldn't get used to the controls. The game couldn't be ported, but a similar game could be designed from the ground up for the DS. For example, SquareEnix is porting PS1's Final Fantasy Tactics to the PSP, but they're designing a brand-new game, Final Fantasy Tactics A2, for the DS. It's all sprites, surely, but I've been playing handheld games long enough to find sprites comfortable. Okay, where's the "real video game system" part? ;)I'm assuming this is a joke, as any gamer could tell you how much of a hit the Wii is around the world. To be honest, I don't really see how a D&D game could really take advantage of Wii's capabilities. I hope its designers are more creative than I am right now. That is, assuming I was correct in remembering hearing of one in development. |
| Edymnion07-04-07, 01:27 PM | I never claimed visuals were the most important part, simply that if this game were ported to the DS it would like like ass.Funny, I've got Final Fantasy III and Metroid Hunters that would beg to differ. I've also got Star Trek: Tactical Assault that looks every bit as good on the DS as it does on the PSP. But either way, graphics are, IMO, the least important part of a game. Its just eye candy. You need solid story, good controls, and good gameplay to make a game good. It really doesn't matter how pretty the box is when all you're getting is a freaking remake of Pong. To be honest, I don't really see how a D&D game could really take advantage of Wii's capabilities. I hope its designers are more creative than I am right now. That is, assuming I was correct in remembering hearing of one in development.Well, think of it this way. Can you imagine a D&D game being played with a mouse? Then you can imagine one on the Wii, since the wiimote can serve all the same purposes of a mouse. Tactics game? Point to your character, then point to where you want them to go, instead of tracing out the entire path one square at a time with a d-pad. I'd kill for a port of even just Morrowind on the Wii. |
| JolanthusTrel07-04-07, 10:43 PM | I personally dont see the point in the PSP. Sony should stay away from handhelds. It has annoyed me that there have been several good gaming ideas yet they were only released for PSP. Anyways, rant over, does anyone agree? The point in the PSP is for Sony to try and cash in on a market they didn't previously have, they are a corporation their goal is to make money. There have always been games that have been released on one system and not another and it will continue. So No, I don't agree with you, cause I have a PSP and not a DS, come to think of it, I've never owned a nintendo system. |
| Psychoticpsymon07-05-07, 12:10 AM | I agree it is somewhat surprising that it is only being released for a portable platform. Don't you see it, though? DnD nerds probly got the PSP, or at least a good number of them did. Even if they didn't, if one person has it then others would probably grab it. They hear their favorite game is coming to a PSP game, and that they, as a group, can play the game on their individual systems, then boom! Game on. If it was internet (infrastructure), well that only applies to a certain subset of people who would want to play over the internet on a console (and those of us with no intention of buying console-compatible keyboards will be the leaders of the counter-movement here). If you play Ad-hoc, you play with people nearby you, and you don't have to lug a big television and console, with a battery rig, to play when your group is on the move. Ps: Ever try playing DnD in a cramped place, like a train? Hell to the no! :D |

So No, I don't agree with you, cause I have a PSP and not a DS, come to think of it, I've never owned a nintendo system. I see your point and i know Sony are just trying to cash in on an unexplored market. I do agree that the PSP is perhaps an ok system. I have played on several of the games for it and i will admit that it has superior graphics but i personally think that is one of the only upsides to the PSP. It is of course personal prefrence but i believe that not only is the DS a better handheld, it is also ahead of the game in almost every aspect compared to the PSP. Nintendo have been making handhelds for years and know what they are doing. I have played on a DS lite and love its developments, particular the duel screen and the ease of controls. And one of the things i love about Nintendo in general is that their games seem to be more creative and imaginative than those of sony and microsoft. It may not be true for every game, but i believe that in general microsoft and sony seem to breed games like rabbits and they are often monotonous and all the same. Dont get me wrong, they have released some awesome games, but many of them are the same and stick to the same genres each time with little variation. In respect, Nintendo seem to have great flare and imagination and alot of there games that i have played are unique and just seem to have something that others games dont. Anyways, as for them only releasing games on one platform, i know they do it and they can still be quite successful games, the point i was making before was...well it wasnt really a point just that i think it is unfare :weep: I would have loved to play 300 on ps2 or on my PC but they only released it for PSP. This D&D Tactics also looks awesome but i am not going to go out and buy a PSP just for that one game so it looks like i cant play it :weep: ...well that is why i love emulators so much:D |
| terracustos07-05-07, 09:27 AM | I'd kill for a port of even just Morrowind on the Wii. I second that. Although i dont own a Wii I love Morrowind and i can just imagine Slashing through enemy monsters in real life with the Wii controller. I would actually buy a Wii just for that game alone! |
| JolanthusTrel07-05-07, 09:49 AM | Anyways, as for them only releasing games on one platform, i know they do it and they can still be quite successful games, the point i was making before was...well it wasnt really a point just that i think it is unfare :weep: I would have loved to play 300 on ps2 or on my PC but they only released it for PSP. ( |
| Professorpain07-05-07, 11:01 AM | No, mixing D&D and PCP is a bad idea. |
| Edymnion07-05-07, 12:34 PM | come to think of it, I've never owned a nintendo system.Wow, either you're like 14 and never knew the golden age of gaming, or you were one seriously deprived child. |
| LordDraxcis07-05-07, 02:45 PM | Oh, hell yes! I've been waiting for this game to come out since I first saw it one the web! I've got a PSP, and I am totally getting this game when it comes out! the screen shots look pretty decent, too, and I like the PSP, so this could be good. And yes, playing D&D in cramped places (like while traveling cross-country in a minivan) is very difficult! |
| JolanthusTrel07-05-07, 05:23 PM | Wow, either you're like 14 and never knew the golden age of gaming, or you were one seriously deprived child. Well any system I wanted I had to buy myself. so I first got myself a PSX followed by the Xbox I'll eventually trade up to a 360. I've played them at friends places, but never owned one. I'm 24 So I was a deprived child. |
| Kursk07-05-07, 05:36 PM | I've never seen a real D&D RPG computer game and probably never will so it is moot for me. |
| JolanthusTrel07-05-07, 11:07 PM | I've never seen a real D&D RPG computer game and probably never will so it is moot for me. Define real? |
| NobodyRemembersThis07-05-07, 11:27 PM | I've never seen a real D&D RPG computer game and probably never will so it is moot for me.Baldur's Gate? Planescape: Torment? Neverwinter Nights? Temple of Elemental Evil? None of these ring a bell? |
| Psychoticpsymon07-05-07, 11:43 PM | All of those games are DnD related, NRT? |
| Archangel_James07-06-07, 12:26 AM | Yup. Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter are both places in the Realms, Planescape is Planescape, and Temple of Elemental Evil is a module. |
| Kursk07-06-07, 10:04 AM | Baldur's Gate? Planescape: Torment? Neverwinter Nights? Temple of Elemental Evil? None of these ring a bell? None of them are actual RPGs. |
| terracustos07-06-07, 11:39 AM | None of them are actual RPGs. Ummmmmm? Not exactly sure what you mean then? Because all these games are exactly RPGs. Taking my favourite all time games, Baldurs gate 1 and 2 for example, you have: A party of up to 6 characters that you can level up and customise Choose from a varied list of character class Role playing and interacting with countless NPCs Fighting through hoards of monsters with tactics, an array of weapons and multitude of spells Great story line and endless replayablilty If these arent RPGs then please tell me what are because as far as i was concerned the above critera ARE what makes a game an RPG? |
| thanatos_lich07-12-07, 12:54 PM | None of them are actual RPGs. roleplaying elitism alert! |
| Sonics02007-12-07, 01:46 PM | It does seem a crime that the worst selling platform gets a D&D game. :P http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t567339.html Worst Selling??? try Third best |
| Kalis Atrud07-12-07, 02:27 PM | Wow, either you're like 14 and never knew the golden age of gaming, or you were one seriously deprived child. Some people did side with Sega instead of Nintendo in the 8 bit and 16 bit days and just moved to Sony and Microsoft after Sega got out of console making. Not me, of course, but some people. Also, PC's have had a great selection of games over the years, so not having a Nintendo system isn't really that bad. |
| Psychoticpsymon07-18-07, 09:01 PM | http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t567339.html Worst Selling??? try Third best I meant that originally, but was against searching out sales figures so let people roll with it :F |
| Spikes01k07-18-07, 10:42 PM | Hey, the PSP is getting better! They are releasing a howl lot of Final Fantasy games! Final Fantasy Tactics is incredible game and I am glad it is coming back! |
| KillerGM07-18-07, 10:58 PM | I must say that I am surprised that this thread, instead of being about how cool it is to have another D&D video game or how people are looking forward to it, became a peeing match between what's a "real" console and what's not. Wait, no I'm not. This is a forum on teh internets. I hope the game will be cool. I just got the husband a PSP (he was tired of the DS), so I actually have a reason to be excited about it. I hardly ever play portable systems anymore (since becoming a dedicated stay-at-home mom), so I'd like to see a D&D game for my Xbox 360. Playing Baulder's Gate II: Dark Alliance emulated on the 360 just isn't enough for me. :P Yes, I have all 3 of the different brands (Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft). They are constantly talking smack to each other. I'm convinced the PSP and the DS are going to join forces and overthrow the 360 one night while I'm asleep. :mage: |
| Mirtek07-19-07, 01:38 PM | It does seem a crime that the worst selling platform gets a D&D game. :P And that it's such a promising D&D game. I am really tempted to buy a PSP since I first read about D&D tactics in Dragon Magazine some month ago. Wow, either you're like 14 and never knew the golden age of gaming, or you were one seriously deprived child. Darkest sins of my youth: I actually had a Sega Mega Drive II instead of a Super Nintendo :weep: |
| Tekumel07-19-07, 09:54 PM | I traded my PSP in for credit towards my XBox 360. Now, with D&D: Tactics coming out & Final Fantasy: Tactics being re-released on PSP, I'm getting another one. With the exception of Psionics being included (*sigh*), and the seemingly small number of PrCs (I think I read 5?), I think it'll be a fun & interesting game. |
| Anodai07-19-07, 11:11 PM | I'd kill for a port of even just Morrowind on the Wii. you cant get Morrowind but you can get the sequel, Oblivion. improvement in so may ways. |
| Diamondfist07-20-07, 10:29 PM | A number of you may wish to read this article if you haven't seen it already or don't already know about this: http://www.gamespot.com/features/6173974/index.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=multimodule&tag=multimodule;picks;title;7# |
| Tekumel07-20-07, 10:32 PM | I'd seen reviews about it, but the new PSP really doesn't seem all that "WOW". TV out is cool. Except for the part where I only play portable systems on the go. If I want to game on my TV, I have my 360. The side-loading UMD Drive is kinda meh. And that tray looks pretty flimsy. Plus...don't drop your PSP, and the disc won't go flying out. Battery life...eh, never really had a problem with it. |
| Ogre4Hire07-21-07, 02:52 AM | I must say that I am surprised that this thread, instead of being about how cool it is to have another D&D video game or how people are looking forward to it, became a peeing match between what's a "real" console and what's not. Wait, no I'm not. This is a forum on teh internets. QFT I'm looking forward to this game, but I really wish that they'd actually get around to releasing it. It was supposed to be released in what, March, originally? Currently looking at August, and I'm suspicious that it'll get delayed again... |
| Kursk07-21-07, 12:22 PM | Baldur's Gate? Planescape: Torment? Neverwinter Nights? Temple of Elemental Evil? None of these ring a bell? None of them are real RPGs in the sense of unlimited play or even real RPG opportunities. |
| JolanthusTrel07-21-07, 10:39 PM | None of them are real RPGs in the sense of unlimited play or even real RPG opportunities. Neverwiner Nights allows you to build your own Moduals... Or do you mean Real RPG opportunities in the sense of wandering off on a completely different tangent and not following the story? QFT I'm looking forward to this game, but I really wish that they'd actually get around to releasing it. It was supposed to be released in what, March, originally? Currently looking at August, and I'm suspicious that it'll get delayed again... It's a D&D game on an electronic system, of course its not going to come out on time, they never do. |
| Kursk07-22-07, 10:35 AM | Neverwiner Nights allows you to build your own Moduals... Or do you mean Real RPG opportunities in the sense of wandering off on a completely different tangent and not following the story? A real RPG. You know, talk to anyone about anything, go any where. Like RPGs for the last 30 or so years. The original reply to my post shows that there are a few people on this board that don't have a clue as to what an RPG is. |
| WarlockDa07-22-07, 04:27 PM | The only way you'll get that in a PC/Console format is with the thrice-damned MMO games. $50 to play a game as much as I want = ok $50 to enjoy the "privledge" of paying another $10-15 a month to play the game = no way. But all the above mentioned games were pretty good, with BG and the NWN series taking the cake. If you are too much of a "purist" to try them, ah well, such is life and unknown loss :) |
| Edymnion07-22-07, 07:25 PM | Hey, the PSP is getting better! They are releasing a howl lot of Final Fantasy games! Final Fantasy Tactics is incredible game and I am glad it is coming back! Its been back. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was on the Gameboy Advance, and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 is going to be on the DS.you cant get Morrowind but you can get the sequel, Oblivion. improvement in so may ways.Yes, but I don't know if the Wii can handle Oblivion's graphic engine without toning it down, but I know it can easily do Morrowind. None of them are real RPGs in the sense of unlimited play or even real RPG opportunities.I'm sorry, there *ISN'T* an RPG out there that allows this. Even the classic RPGs like Final Fantasy have a very finite story line that only goes so far and stops. What exactly do you call a real RPG? Honestly, I want to know what these magical computer RPGs you have played are that have unlimited gameplay so I can go buy them.A real RPG. You know, talk to anyone about anything, go any where. Like RPGs for the last 30 or so years. The original reply to my post shows that there are a few people on this board that don't have a clue as to what an RPG is.I'm sorry, but you can talk to anyone you want to in Neverwinter Nights, and you can go anywhere you want, within reason. Of course, if you're trying to use pen and paper "do literally anything you can think of", well, I'm sorry, but such a game *CANNOT BE MADE* on a computer or video game system. Seriously, show me one "real RPG" that lets you go anywhere you want, at any time you want, and say anything you want to anyone you want. |
| Spikes01k07-22-07, 07:37 PM | Its been back. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was on the Gameboy Advance, and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 is going to be on the DS. Anyone who has played FFT "original" knows that the FFTA and probably FFTA2 are crap games. I played FFTA and hated it, didn't do FFT justice! Maybe once this gets out FFT2 will finally come out! |
| Lunas_Argent07-22-07, 07:44 PM | I'll just stick with my 8-bit Nintendo and Gauntlet.:) |

| Spikes01k07-22-07, 10:05 PM | The storyline didn't hold up, but the game mechanics and length were much improved, and the law cards went a long way to keep it from getting repetative. I guess I would have to agree to disagree here. The terrain and verity of enemies kept it from getting repetitive. The cards were nothing but a childish addition to appeal to the easier bored children that were expected to play the game boy system. Give me a chess mod any day over FFTA. |
| trent05507-23-07, 02:46 AM | since i have a psp i was pretty happy when i heard about this. sounds like a good way to pass travel time, specialy if you can make your totaly own charaters. had a bit of a nerdgasam when i heard about FFT becomeing FFT2 for PsP. FFTA was a good game but no where near as good as the original, way to kiddy looking. plus i loved the charater death part, really kept you on edge. was i the only dude i know who didnt like the ps2 dark alliance. |
