D&D on the Now Show [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-08-08, 08:31 AM Well, there's a nicity! I just listened to this week's topical news satire comedy show The Now Show on BBC Radio 4. Mitch Ben, the musical adept of the show, delightfully gave D&D a shout out with his final song. Apparently Mitch has "dabbled" in D&D over the years (my respect for him - already high - just rose another notch); he mentioned the passing of good old Gary Gygax and commented how D&D is a "much-maligned and misunderstood hobby", and attributed this to the lack of D&D Rock songs (this being a satirical show after all) and proceeded to then sing one in it's honour! (I thought it was quite funny, but then again Mitch Ben is a musical master. The Now Show is a very British Radio 4 comedy, though, so your milage may vary!)

What I thought was particulary awesome, though, and the most pertinent point, was that despite it being a bit tongue in cheek, I thought there was an absense of that slightly patronising, steriotypical "D&D-is-only-played-by-geeks" schtick most of the D&D/RPG references in popular culture go for (or at least the one's I've heard about recently!) This was a much more affectionate satire than some, done by someone who actually has (or does) play.

So, thanks, Mitch! A positive mention in no lesser place than the last bastion of intelligent comedy and programming in the UK. Scratch one for our side!

1Though if you're a fan of intellectual satire (like say Have I got News For You, but slightly even more up market!), I heartily recommend the Now Show. (Of course, nonUkers may not get some of the topical jokes.)
