D&D over the net? [Archive] - Wizards Community

There are what seems like no players in my area, and I'd like to get into a game. Has anyone done it before successfully? Is there any service for it? Or best way to do it? Anyone who would be interested?

I game there twice a week. Free online tabletop simulator. Chat, miniature map, dieroller, autocalc nodes, logging... more than enough to run any tabletop game over the internet.

If you do use OpenRPG, I've been known to build some nodes for it (http://www.rpgsheets.com/cgi-bin/arcdb.cgi?cat=35&sec=4). I do requests as well.

Many websites with forums available (Including this one, if you look in the community forums) have areas devoted to playing D&D solid, while chat programs such as AIM (and the Wizards chat boards, I think...?) can be used to play D&D over; specific programs (like OpenRPG (http://www.openrpg.com/), as Tempest says) provide a much more specialized service to those that want to play D&D over the internet.

You can check over at This Area (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=598) to get in touch with any others who are trying to set up online D&D games over whichever medium; there are also other sites which I won't bother linking to, which are also available.

My associates and I are trying to do something about the "in the closet" nature of D&D that causes players to have to play online due to not having a group in their area. Keep an eye on my sig, when we have it worked out I will post a link there.

As have I, but eventually our group moved over to OpenRPG. It was similar to moving from a crowded seedy bar across the tracks to a private room in a public hostel. Nothing wrong with IRC, and it gets the job done, but OpenRPG was built to do it and handles essentially everything that you could want (except file transfer, but since you're using online images for maps and miniatures anyway, you probably have an FTP).

Its goal is to make more people aware of virtual tabletop programs and to give folks a chance to try out all the various programs, and even play with them in actual games. Check it out.
