| achinfish07-01-06, 12:08 PM | Finally! A paperback version of the Player's Handbook! I hope pb versions of DM and MM come out soon. I refuse to write in hardback books. I know, I know, that's my hangup, not WotC's problem, but I can hope, can't I? :) The only complaint I have is that the inside margin is too small; I can't take the book to Kinko's to have it spiral-bound. I understand why this isn't possible; They'd have to completely repaginate the book or change the dimensions of the book just to get that extra 1/2"... /Sigh |
| Another Gnome07-01-06, 12:15 PM | You write in your books?! *dies* |
| achinfish07-01-06, 12:18 PM | No, I have never written in my books, because they are all hardback. Now I can. :D |
| Azezel07-01-06, 12:21 PM | I write in my books. I write the errate, I write page cross-references. Hell - I even cut index notches into the pages with a craft knife. And there's the duct tape too... |
| Bahamut07-01-06, 01:43 PM | I write in my books. I write the errate, I write page cross-references. Hell - I even cut index notches into the pages with a craft knife. And there's the duct tape too... Heresy....inform the Inquisition. |
| RedUncle07-01-06, 03:10 PM | I've actually rewritten my core books -- I've gone through all major sections and written it down in short hand ---- basically extracting the most important rules and make page references --- so when I DM, I've only got about nine pages to thumb through ---- and from there I proceed to check my hardback copies... that alone took over a week of "study" (reminded me of highschool!!") |
| achinfish07-01-06, 03:49 PM | That's sick, man! :) Can I have your notes? I'm sure Wizards won't mind since it's just a reference for the Core books, which I own. Plus it's OGL material unless you transcribed world material. |
| Mighty Ranter07-01-06, 03:53 PM | One word: STICKY NOTES Well, actually two words, but I use stickly notes to write down my little comments, notes and page references. It's handy, but gets messy after you have like, 20 sticky notes comming out of your PHB. Well, yeah, just my two cents. |

Plus it's OGL material unless you transcribed world material. hey bro --- yeah I'd be happy to share my notes with you - but are we allowed to do that?? I don't want to step on any WOTC toes, because they've been really REALLY kind to me (outstanding customer service!) -- I called the customer support line once regarding a faulty CD (the Eberron music from City of Towers skipped) --- and they were exceptionally helpful and very sincere --- I was rather touched, considering the dog-eat-dog world we live in ------ (my bank, for example, doesn't even know I have an account with them... ugh) but yeah, I've actually mixed in Forgotten Realms and Eberron info in my personal notes --- citing page numbers and basic summaries... most of it's reminders on how to calculate the effects of various spells and saving throws and AC and CR calculation etc.... it's fairly dry!! -- but like I said, I'd be happy to help as long as it doesn't violate any copyright rules -------- and thanks for the compliment! ;) |
| Deacon Liadon07-01-06, 05:29 PM | If your looking for it, Mongoose publish a pocket DMG. |
| VrecknidjX07-01-06, 05:59 PM | Bibliophile though I may be, let me throw my support behind writing in your book. Look, the PHB, barring some really unusual circumstance, isn't going to be worth much 10 years from now. Sure, my 1st ed. PHB might fetch $20 somewhere, maybe a bit more because it's signed by Gygax, but, honestly, these books are there to be used. Dave |
| Skink_Smasher07-02-06, 02:09 AM | I've actually rewritten my core books -- I've gone through all major sections and written it down in short hand ---- basically extracting the most important rules and make page references --- so when I DM, I've only got about nine pages to thumb through ---- and from there I proceed to check my hardback copies... that alone took over a week of "study" (reminded me of highschool!!") Damn, 9 pages?!? If ever there was an argument for a condensed, rules-only book, this is it. I'm new to D&D, but reading over many of the books, sometimes I wish all that extra "fluff" was gone and just the rules were listed. WoTC should think about that too. A large tome, consisting of purely rulesets from every book, creature, module, expansion, whatever, all condensed down. It'd sell like gold-plated hotcakes. |
| Morbid07-02-06, 02:47 AM | I write in my books. I write the errate, I write page cross-references. Hell - I even cut index notches into the pages with a craft knife. And there's the duct tape too... I think I just died a little inside... Now I won't complain much... Because technically people would consider it blasphemous to look at my PHB (missing cover, chewed pages, and outer pages duct taped in) but thats kinda harsh intentionally chopping it up. I had a beagle do the work on mine. |
| Azezel07-02-06, 05:32 AM | There are two kinds of books in this world. fine books, and all the others. The PHB is a utility book, a work book. It doesn't matter if it will be worth money in ten years time, today, right now it has a job to do. Index notches mean I can navigate faster - straight to the chapter I want in a tenth of a second - I've not removed any information from the book - just made finding the information easier. Same goes for writing the errata and cross-references. For my work I need a regs book called BS7671 OSG - I've done more or less the same things to this book - is this a sin too? Oh, and as for the duct tape on my PHB - you recal that back in the day, the bindings really weren't man enough for the job - after a year or two the book was near to falling apart. That's why I re-inforced my 3.5 PHB as soon as I bought it. As it turns out the quallity is a lot better, so I probably didn't have to do that. Meh... |
| RedUncle07-02-06, 06:35 AM | Damn, 9 pages?!? what I've written is extremely "distilled" --- it's mostly just reminders of how to calculate initiative / run combat / magic / and a bunch of page references to the core books ---- without the core books, they'd be worthless... it's easy to forget important steps during the heat of DMing a radical battle!! hehe ---- I also wrote it with my players in mind, who have extremely limited experience ---- (but we're playing again today!! yay!!) but yeah, it's not as impressive as it sounds - but I find it rather useful... love |
| Morbid07-02-06, 07:10 AM | It's not so much if the book will cost somethng some day. It's more about what I paid for it to begin with... |
