D&D players kit [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-31-07, 02:37 AM I have a Question about the D&D players kit. You see my friend says the players handbook in the box is only a partial one. :confused: I see nothing to point at this but I still want to be sure before I purchased it. Just wanted to check with people who bought this product.

12-31-07, 04:37 AM I don't know for certain about the Player's Kit (I'm pretty sure it's the full rulebook), but he might be thinking about the Basic Game, which has an abbreviated rulebook in it. It's easy to confuse those two as long as you aren't terribly familiar with the game.

The Player's Kit is unnecessary, though. Dice cost about ten bucks for more than a full set of them, and you can get free character sheets (http://www.mad-irishman.net/) that are far better than the ones provided there. Just get the PHB on its own (or buy the boxed set of all three core books; they're cheap on eBay now) and roll on.

12-31-07, 02:51 PM You have to be a little careful when buying some of the Boxed material to make sure you know what you are getting. The Players Kit (PHB, dice, plus others often including a booster of minis) is very different from the Basic Game (fixed minitures and limited rule set).

Granted I didn't really need it I purchased a Players Kit at a lower price than the hardcover PHB mostly for the "free" booster. Now the booster was good to me but I actually like the softcover PHB better than my hardcover one. Both contain the same information but I think the softcover is much easier to handle and I like the way its flat edges sit better. I don't know which will hold up better under long term use and abuse but if the net price is the same or less I'd definitely go with the Player's Kit over just the PHB.

Note there are really only two reasons to get the Player's Kit: The PHB or possibly the old minis booster. If you have a PHB and don't need another and/or you don't get get/need the minis then just pass on this product.

I don't know if Wizards has changed their pricing, but the hardcover PHB and the Player's Kit were the same MSRP when I got mine, which made it a no-brainer. I got the same book, plus dice, a little pamphlet on character creation (helpful since I was a n00b), a "choose your own adventure" type module to play through, the minis booster pack (I traded most of the monsters away to get PCs), and a little box to put it in too (I kept my minis in there until I got a Huge-sized one that wouldn't fit).

So, unless covers really matter to you, or you find a difference in price, there's no reason not to go for it.

01-01-08, 01:07 AM I bought the Player's Kit specifically for the paperback Player's Handbook. More out of curiousity than anything else. Its identical to the hardcover edition, 'cept cooler-- cause not everyone can say they have a paperback PH ;).

I'm saving up to buy the leather-bound editions of the Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide now. My D&D v.3.5 collection is as complete as its gonna get, so I wanna buy these items as a "capstone" to the collection.
