D&D Program [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-01-06, 11:47 AM I wasn't sure where to post this so I hope this is the right forum.

I recently started playing D&D with a few friends and we love it! The only problem is that our DM is going back to college at the end of the summer. We really want to continue our adventures somehow online once he goes back. I've downloaded a few rp helpers that keep up with char stats, etc but nothing that really appealed to me. Can anyone give me a good program thats not to complex but is really good for multi people to log into and play D&D. I'm willing to pay for this by the way.

I'm also looking for some type of animated dice roller that multi people can log into and see each others rolls.

08-01-06, 11:56 AM so far i find www.fantasygrounds.com to be pretty good. There's a free online rpg gaming aid at www.webrpg.com if i remember correctly

08-01-06, 12:43 PM I'm gaming online with my friends. Webrpg looks like a good resource, but it's buggier than Windows ME and almost impossible to figure out how to use. I finally managed it, but my distant player's haven't, so I'm stuck using AIM.

I draw my maps in Paint ahead of time, and post them on photobucket. I then link the maps to my players. So far it's far from ideal, but it works for us.

08-01-06, 02:52 PM Another vote for OpenRPG. It uses an IRC-like (formatted) chat option with a miniature map and public dierolls (whisper to yourself for private rolls). A bit of nodework can get you an amazing macroed sheet as well (for instance, I just press a button and enter any conditional modifiers and it rolls all my attacks for me).

(If any of you use macs, there's a fix you'll need to do, since OSX wxPython tends to be a bit too strict. But this is easy and isn't necessary most of the time.)

If you demand speech, use TeamSpeak on top of OpenRPG.

I use Fantasy Grounds as well. You have to pay for it, but what you get really is worth it. If you have the extra money to spend, I find it can feel a lot more like a real, over-the-table game (you actually get to pick up and roll dice at different stages!)

08-10-06, 03:10 PM Nexrus, I've developed a program for people in your exact situation to be able to continue playing online. Here's a partial screenshot. Basically, you move virtual miniatures around on a digital map. Among the many features, it lets you play sound effects, show visual aids, and has a built-in die roller (you can even hear the dice rolling, if you like) and text chat.
