I have been challenged by my friend to answer the following questions. I know nothing of the game, so I need your help.

1. What is the ranged attack bonus of a 9th level necromancer without any weapon pros? (2nd Edition)

2. Your are a dual class FTR 3 / THF 6 (Human) in _._.(2 letters here I can't read, it looks like B.S or maybe D. 5. .....). What is your will saving throw?

IF anyone can provide any answers, I will be eternally greatful.

These are from an older edition of the game and will be best answered on the Out of Print (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=54) Board.

Neither of those seem to make any sense, in any edition.

Agree with Weasel, they're trick questions. Ranged attack is still based on the Dex mod so without the rest of the info you can't answer it, and in 2nd ed there was no Will saving throw, Saves were set into seperate areas (9?) based on what was happening. Been a while since I looked at my 2nd ed books so there might have been a Will save, but I don't think there was. If they mean the 3.5 Ed then by Thf they would have to mean Rogue, I think someone is jacking with you.

[grognard nitpick]
There's 5 save catagoriesin AD&D though most of them encompass more than one thing, but Dragon is on the money

Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here and try to decipher this question.

It's possible that the unreadable letters at the end are 3.5. If that's the case, then it still doesn't make sense for three reasons: first, you don't "dual class" anymore; second, if "THF" is meant to be "thief," as I believe it is, then it also doesn't work because thief isn't a class anymore; third, your Will save also includes your Wisdom modifier, and if you don't have that, you can't figure a Will saving throw.

Now, I'll make five assumtions:
1) By "_._" he means "3.5."
2) By "dual" class" he means "multi-classed."
3) By "FTR" he means "fighter."
4) By "THF" he means "rogue."
5) By "will saving throw" he means "Base Will Save."

If those five assumtions hold, then your Will Save would be +4.

As to the first question, even if I made the assumptions he meant the necromancer's attack bonus while actually using a ranged weapon (and therefore applying whatever penalty 2nd Edition called for when using a weapon you are not proficient with) and that he meant without apply an other modifiers, such as Dexterty, I still would not be able to answer the question because I lack access to my 2nd Edition books at the moment.

I have been challenged by my friend to answer the following questions. I know nothing of the game, so I need your help.

1. What is the ranged attack bonus of a 9th level necromancer without any weapon pros? (2nd Edition)What's the necro's Dexterity score? In 2nd Edition, characters received a flat bonus to ranged attacks based on DEX. Attack rolls were based on AC and character level. If memory serves, wizard THAC0 progressed at 1 evey 4 levels. This would mean a 9th level wizzy type would need an 18 to hit AC 0 (that's AC 20 in 3.5 terms), but that's meaningless without the actual AC of your opponent.

However, given NO weapon proficiencies that bonus would likely be cancelled completely by the non-weapon proficiency penalty. Unless said necromancer has a crazy-high DEX at level 9 (which was actually quite a respectable level back then), he'll either net +0 to his attack roll or a penalty of some sort.

Incidentally, the issue described cannot happen. ALL characters in the 2nd Edition ruleset got X number of weapon proficiencies and Y number of non-weapon proficiencies at Level 1. Additional proficiencies for each were gained every Z levels. All variables were based on character class. Wizards gained NWP faster than others, while fighters gained WP at a crazy rate. All proficiencies HAD to be "spent" during character creation or at level-up. At a bare minimum, the Necro would be proficient with a single martial weapon - if he was smart - a ranged weapon.

i'm guessing you mean in a weapon he doesn't have proficiency in. but without his dex score it is hard to give you the correct answer.

the two letter should be D.S. = DarkSun. i think he is talking about a save vs. psionics as it was the main point of DarkSun.

OK - 2nd Edition rules:

Ranged attack bonus:
Dex 16: +1
Dex 17 or 18: +2

Wizard non-weapon proficiency penalty: -5 (ouch)

THAC0 advancement: 1 for every 3 levels past 1st, or 18 at level 9

Assuming average DEX, this guy will have a hard time hitting the broad side of a barn from the inside.
