D&D References in popular culture? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I am doing a research essay for my Enligh paper, due later this week. (yeah, yeah - I'm a procrastinator)

As I was thinking of what angle to take (which I still haven't figured out), it occured to me that there are probably a lot of references to D&D in popular culture, so to speak. I know Stephen Lynch has done several songs, Vin Diesel is an acknowledged player, Weezer has a reference in their song "In My Garage". I plan on using all of these.

Can any of you think of any other references that might be useful?

I am also going to be throwing in some of the myths and attempting to debunk them. Do you have any you think would be good for that as well?

I will admit that I am not as involved in the gaming community as my husband, his friends, or anyone here. I do enjoy gaming, but have not been involved for most of my life - only about 3 years at this point. I was raised thinking it was Satanic, which provides a good background for me there. But, since I haven't grown up with it, I don't know a lot of the issues that y'all might come across. Help a girl out?

Dude, D&D IS popular culture

Yes, I'm aware. It is not, however, popular belief. D&D still labors under stigmas of being played by "loser geeks in their mom's basement". I want to refute that...in my essay at least.

Solaris: How do I find those threads? Last I knew the search function didn't work, and I have not the time to read every thread in every area of the forum to find those specific threads...

Related topics come up on D&D General every few weeks. Usually when someone finds himself unable to contain his excitement at the validation brought by news of Vin Diesel being a player, or seeing it on Buffy, or whatever.

But I can't seem to find any right now, so perhaps it's time for another one after all.

I wish I had thought of posting here weeks ago when I first came up with this thought for my essay. Stupid English professors...

I did not, however, think of it until today on the way to our normal gaming session. I don't get to play today because I have to do this essay, and I don't have weeks to wait for another one to come back up. :)

Hopefully you aren't viewing me as one who is all excited at finding out Vin Diesel plays... I'll admit, I was happy when I found out - about 2 years ago or so. Now, not such a big deal but it will definitely come in handy in this stupid freaking essay.

To refute your argument, I offer this theorem:

For every Vin Diesel, there is at least one Ekaj (http://ekajsmash.tripod.com/background.html).

Proof: Go to a convention. ;)

It's really simple...as you said, the myth is that all D&D players are losers stuck in the basement. Well, why don't you talk to a few of the players and see what they're really about...take me for example...I'm a college student on the verge of graduating with minors in both lit and film, and a major in Creative Writing. Once I graduate, I'm going to begin working with HBO, and yes, as for another gamer myth, I do have a girlfriend. It's not a lot of stuff of course, but it's a start. All you need to do is focus on a myth, and then give a real life example that refutes it. Look up statistics...for example, there was a popular myth that lnked D&D and youth suicide, though there have been conclusive studies down that proved this totally wrong.

I am part of a gaming group now, so I have plenty of real-life people to study. The group consists of my husband & I, his best friend and HIS wife, and 3 single males - two of whom fit the "living with mom" profile, but that's about it. Of the 7 of us, 3 are attending college. :) That's an easy one to debunk...but I'm certain there are others.

I am currently delving into Jack Chick's website for things he propagates (so I can debunk them). Man...he sickens me! And I was raised on his crap too! I hadn't realized just how much he attacks until now. Nothing is safe, apparently, and my husband is going to hell.

Well, there was the commercial a while back of the geeky guy who married a model. It was a commercial for appliances. In one part she gave him a PHB.

D&D references are also made in the Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. There is also the Reno 911 skit. A lot of people in advertising and writing used to play, apparently, so the references are becoming more profound every year.

We just made it as a reference remark in a >Nissan Commercial< (http://www.nissanusa.com/7days/index.html?intcmp=7DaysInASentra.Promo1. Homepag%3e). (Watch the video to the left ...)
