D&D Sightings [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-08-06, 01:43 AM As I was channel surfing last night, I paused on a channel which happened to be showing "Gray's Anatomy" (not something I normally watch), and just as I was about to jog on past, here is this supposedly "cool" intern reassuring a patient that high-school is tough for everyone who doesn't "fit in" -- like how he was President and Treasurer of the Dungeons and Dragons club".

That got me to thinking about how many other times D&D (or ever RPG in general) has shown up in some sort of "pop-culture" setting. And I'm not talking the cartoon (way under-rated, by the way" or titled movies (second was better than the first (which I can't find anywhere to buy on DVD) but both were severely under-budgetted!), or even Tom Hanks' Monsters and Mazes. I'm talking move like the above, or the book "Enterprise: By The Book" (where a back-plot is Ensign Hoshi Sato teaching other crew-members an RPG game).

In my head I know there were others, but darned if I can think of them now.

Anyone want to throw out any others?

08-08-06, 02:10 AM I do recall it being played on Futurama and/or Family Guy. Of course, that might be my brain making things up after 48 hours of no sleep...

08-08-06, 02:43 AM Ah, just remembered the oldest -- the beginning of E.T., just before the dreaded "***** Breath" line. As I recall, there were several follow-up references later in the movie too.

08-08-06, 03:36 AM I remember an episode of Verture Brothers where Dr. Venture, that albino guy, Baron Underbite and some Chinese guy were playing in a college flashback.

And I specifically remember an episode of That 70's Show where Donna's boss, a DJ, and Alice Cooper played first edition, 'cause I don't remember a "dragon of fear" or how a Rod of Cancellation would be "risky".

08-08-06, 01:00 PM I was flippin' channels a few weeks ago and I landed on an episode of "The New Twilight Zone" (I think it was), where MacCauley Culkin's little brother summoned some kind of Super Heroic Greatsword-Wielding Dragon-Slaying Barbarian Avenger out of a comic book. The Barbarian was played by the same guy who played Puddy (sp?) on Seinfeld and also "The Tick."

The kid's father was an abusive, alcoholic, low-rent security guard who derided the kid for being a D&D-playing, no-friend-having embarrassment. The kid explained the Barbarian as being someone he met at a gaming or comics convention who dresses up as a comic book character for a living.

Dad didn't like this grown man hangin' out with his son, so dad disarmed the Barbarian Avenger with his nightstick and pounded the livin' crap out of him, causing him to slink away to the basement to lick his wounds.

Dad must have secretly been a level 20 Warrior.

After stating "that Lizzy McGuire episode" I fail to see how "That was dumb" needed to be said at all. It follows just as closely and inevitably as "I hit water" does following "I fell out of a boat."

08-09-06, 01:19 AM Angel and Buffy both had references to DnD, more than once.

One of the Friday the 13th movies (Part 2 I think) had a kids who dreamed he was a sorcerer and tries to take on Freddy (he doesn't do so well).

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert mention DnD from time to time.

I have seen DnD in a Maytag commercial.
