D&D Steampunk? [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-08-06, 04:25 PM Hey guys, I'm looking to run a Steampunk campaign, any WoTC books dealing with that sort of setup?

I've seen Mongoose has published an OGL Steampunk book, and I've got D20 Modern, does D20 Past have anything in it?

I would advise staying away from Mongoose unless you've actually paged through the book. I once bought OGL Cyberpunk sight-unseen (I learned my lesson) from them, and I was terribly disappointed. Most of it was basically a reprint of the d20 Modern SRD with poor editing, and I wasn't very impressed with the original material.

Yeah, but it was more complex than I'm looking for.

I didn't volunteer to be the DM because I wanted to play by someone elses rules :P.

Iron Kingdoms? I checked out Amazon, is it really a three-book series? That's a bit more involved (eckspensive X3) than I'd like to get, what alternatives are there?

03-09-06, 03:22 AM As far as Steampunk goes, there are a couple of decent settings as well as some generic handbooks that I could recommend.

One of the premiere settings is the afore-mentioned Iron Kingdoms (http://privateerpress.com/ironkingdoms/default.php) published by Privateer Press, which has a great deal of support and several books so far, including the Witchfire Trilogy, Iron Kingdoms World Guide, Liber Mechanika, and the Monsternomicon just to name a few. It is all d20 OGL and ready to drag-and-drop into any campaign. There are also a number of Warmachine minis that Privateer makes that support the system (which is one of my favs).

Another is Victoriana (http://www.heresy-gaming.co.uk/USstore/vic1001.htm) by Heresy Gaming, which is set in 19th-century London. A fantastic setting with a wealth of material, it's one drawback is that it is not based on the d20 system. It is, however, a great resource.

Another resource that offers some great ideas sans setting is Fantasy Flight's Sorcery & Steam (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/dd40.html), a rather nice OGL support product for the Steampunk genre (I use this one quite a bit). This book is probably your best, single resource.

Finally, d20 Past does not offer a specific Steampunk setting, although one that is suggested comes close: Shadow Stalkers which is set in the 19th century and would need only some minor adjustments.

That's off the top of my head.

Also, Iron Kingdoms isn't steampunk, it's "full metal fantasy." :rolleyes:

03-09-06, 05:11 PM If you want just one book, get the Sorcery and Steam mentioned above, it has classes, ways to bled the steam into games in progress, and I found my copy for like, 5 bucks so it's most likely cheap too.
